Windows “anonymous access” usually means allowing an SMB client to sign in to a network share as Guest without credentials. Microsoft recommends keeping this insecure guest access disabled and using an account on the host instead. Turning on Network discovery, File and Printer Sharing, or adding Everyone to a permissions list does not by itself enable anonymous sign-in.
What “anonymous access” means in Windows file sharing
When Windows connects to a shared folder over SMB, the client authenticates to the computer or device hosting the share. In this context, anonymous access generally means accepting an unauthenticated Guest logon. It is distinct from discovering a computer on the network and from the permissions that determine what an authenticated or guest connection may do.

Windows can therefore ask for credentials even when the share is visible or its permissions include Everyone. Share permissions and the folder’s Security-tab permissions control access to resources; they do not change the SMB authentication method. Microsoft describes these as separate parts of configuring a Windows share (Microsoft’s shared-folder troubleshooting guidance).
Use authenticated access if possible
The safer solution is to configure the host to accept an account and password, then connect with an account that has permission to the share. Microsoft recommends against enabling insecure guest logons. Its guidance for a third-party device that only supports guest authentication is to upgrade or replace the device or its software rather than weaken Windows client security (Microsoft’s SMB guest-logon guidance).

| Approach | Authentication and compatibility | Security and management |
|---|---|---|
| Authenticated access (recommended) | Uses an account permitted by the host; may not work with legacy devices that offer only guest access. | Retains SMB signing and encryption support, and is easier to manage under security policy. |
| Insecure guest access (discouraged) | May allow a compatible legacy SMB device to connect without credentials; the host must also offer guest access and allow the resource. | Guest logons do not support SMB signing or encryption and increase exposure to spoofing, adversary-in-the-middle attacks, malware, ransomware, and sensitive-data exposure. |
Check which device is the client and which is the host
The client is the Windows PC trying to open the share. The host is the PC or device providing it. Guest access requires compatible settings on both sides: allowing it on the client cannot make a host offer guest access, and host permissions cannot override a client policy that rejects guest logons.
Check the Windows edition and version on the client before changing settings. Microsoft documents that defaults differ across editions and releases: Windows 10 Enterprise, Education, and Pro for Workstations reject guest credentials by default, while Windows 10 Home and Pro historically allowed guest authentication by default. Windows 11 Pro no longer permits SMB client guest connections or guest fallback by default, aligning with Windows 10/11 Enterprise, Education, and Pro for Workstations (Microsoft’s SMB security hardening overview).

Signing requirements are especially important on Windows 11 version 24H2. Microsoft says Enterprise, Pro, and Education require inbound and outbound SMB signing by default in that release; Home does not require either by default. Guest logons cannot use SMB signing or encryption, so a signing requirement may prevent a guest connection even after the client guest-logon policy is enabled (Microsoft’s SMB signing guidance).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCheck network discovery and sharing separately
If the host does not appear on the network, first check the network profile and discovery/sharing options. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance lists these controls under Network and Sharing Center > Advanced sharing settings, including Network discovery and File and Printer Sharing for the Private profile. They expose discovery and sharing functionality; they do not grant anonymous access.

- On the host, confirm the active network is set to Private if that is appropriate for the trusted network.
- Open Network and Sharing Center > Advanced sharing settings and check Network discovery and File and Printer Sharing for the Private profile.
- For a folder share, verify both the share’s permissions and the folder’s Security-tab permissions. Grant only the access needed rather than broadly assigning Full Control to Everyone.
Making a share broadly reachable can expose its contents to other devices on the network. Windows’ local-account sharing policy also has a “Guest only” mode that maps network logons using local accounts to Guest. Microsoft warns that anyone who can reach the computer may then access shared resources at the access level assigned to them. The alternative, Classic mode, authenticates local network logons as those accounts (Microsoft’s local security policy reference).
Enable insecure guest logons only for a trusted legacy device
If a specific device cannot be configured for authenticated access and you accept the security risk, an administrator can enable the client setting. This is a compatibility workaround, not a general way to remove password prompts. It can still fail if the host does not allow guest access, permissions deny access, organizational policy overrides the setting, or SMB signing is required.

Option 1: Group Policy
- On the client PC, open the Local Group Policy Editor and go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Network > Lanman Workstation > Enable insecure guest logons.
- Set the policy to Enabled, apply the change, and retry the connection.
Option 2: Elevated PowerShell
- Open PowerShell as an administrator on the client PC.
- Run
Set-SmbClientConfiguration -EnableInsecureGuestLogons $true -Force. - Retry the connection. If the setting is managed by an organization, local changes may be blocked or reversed by policy.
Microsoft’s documented error for a blocked guest connection is: “You can’t access this shared folder because your organization’s security policies block unauthenticated guest access.” The setting does not make guest logons safe: Microsoft warns that guest access can expose clients to spoofing and adversary-in-the-middle attacks, among other risks, and recommends not enabling it (Microsoft’s guidance and configuration details).

Printer access has an important limitation
Windows includes a general File and Printer Sharing option, but that is not proof that a printer can be used anonymously. The Windows guidance cited here does not establish a printer-specific anonymous-access procedure. For a shared printer, use an authenticated sharing setup or consult the printer or server’s own documentation for its supported access method; do not assume that enabling folder guest access also enables anonymous printing.
Troubleshoot the error you actually see
- The host is not discoverable: Check the network profile, Network discovery, and File and Printer Sharing before changing authentication settings. “The network path was not found” may indicate a connectivity or discovery problem rather than a guest-logon block.
- The host appears, but Windows says policy blocks unauthenticated guest access: Check the client’s Windows edition/version and guest-logon policy. If the host supports accounts, connect with an authorized account instead.
- Windows requests credentials: Provide an account allowed on the host. An Everyone entry in share or folder permissions does not disable SMB authentication.
- The guest setting is enabled but connection still fails: Check whether the host permits Guest, whether both share and filesystem permissions allow the requested access, and whether SMB signing is required. Do not disable signing or encryption casually to force a guest connection; Microsoft does not recommend that as a workaround.
For guest-authentication diagnostics on supported systems, Microsoft identifies Event Viewer > Applications and Service Logs > Microsoft > Windows > SMBClient > Security. Event ID 31017 indicates a rejected insecure guest logon; 31018 indicates that the policy is enabled (Microsoft’s event and policy documentation).
