To host All the Mods 9 – No Frills, download the matching Server-Files archive for the exact CurseForge release, run it with a compatible Java installation, allocate at least 6 GB of RAM (8–10 GB is a more practical starting range), accept the Minecraft EULA, and make every client use the same No Frills release, Minecraft version and Forge loader. No Frills is not interchangeable with the regular All the Mods 9 pack.

All the Mods 9 – No Frills is a Forge modpack for Minecraft 1.20.1. The project description characterizes it as All the Mods 9 with many bells and whistles removed while retaining the same endgame. It remains a large installation: the project lists more than 400 mods. That scale is why its server needs substantially more memory and more careful version control than a vanilla Minecraft server.
The CurseForge project and files listing show the No Frills 0.2 client archive and the matching Server-Files-0.2.zip, both dated April 24, 2025. The project listing also reports about 1.1 million downloads (CurseForge/ATMTeam, 2025). Treat those file names and dates as release identifiers, not as permission to mix files from another All the Mods pack.

No Frills and regular ATM9 are different installations
A regular All the Mods 9 client cannot be assumed to work with a No Frills server. The removed or changed mods alter registries, recipes and sometimes world data. Select All the Mods 9 – No Frills in the launcher, and select the same release number that the server operator installed. Do not let a launcher update one side while the other remains pinned.
Choose local hosting or a managed host
Both approaches are supported by the official All The Mods server guidance. Local hosting gives you complete access to the files and network settings, while a managed host can take care of much of the operating-system and connectivity work. The decision is operational rather than a pack requirement.

For either option, verify disk space, sustained CPU capacity, backup access and the ability to keep a specific release. A host that cannot preserve custom files or a pinned loader is a poor fit even if its advertised player limit looks high.

Requirements before you download
Memory planning
The official server guide specifies at least 6 GB or more of allocated RAM. A separate current All The Mods installation overview lists 8 GB minimum and 10 GB recommended for ATM9. These are different planning baselines, not contradictory guarantees: 6 GB is a lower floor in the server guide, while 8–10 GB is a more realistic starting range for a large pack.

Actual demand depends on concurrent players, view and simulation distance, chunk-generation activity, automation-heavy bases and other JVM or server settings. Allocate memory to the server process, but leave enough physical RAM for the operating system and any panel or backup service.
Java and the loader
The supplied guidance requires a compatible Java runtime but does not publish one universal Java major-version number for every future file. Use the runtime required by the Forge build in the release you selected, and verify the executable that the start script actually invokes. In a terminal, java -version reports the default runtime. If several Java installations exist, the default command can point to the wrong one; set the script to the intended executable or configure the operating system’s Java alternatives.

Files and access
- A clean directory or an empty server folder where the complete archive can be extracted.
- Permission to run scripts and write files in that directory.
- Firewall, router or hosting-panel access if players will connect from outside your home network.
- A separate backup location for the world, configuration and server files before updates.
Download the exact server archive
- Open the All the Mods 9 – No Frills project on CurseForge and select its Files tab.
- Choose the exact release you want. For the files listed on April 24, 2025, that release is 0.2.
- Download the archive named Server-Files for that release, such as
Server-Files-0.2.zip. The client modpack zip alone is not a complete dedicated-server installation. - Download the matching client profile as well, or record the release number so every player can install it later.
- Keep the archive intact until extraction. Do not selectively copy a few mods from it or combine it with a regular ATM9 server directory.
Extract and configure the server
1. Use a clean directory
Create a new folder dedicated to this server and extract every member of the Server-Files archive into it. On a managed host, upload the complete extracted file set to the host’s main server folder, as the official guide instructs. A partial upload commonly produces missing-file or incomplete-install errors.
2. Inspect the supplied scripts and setup file
Open the included start script and any setup YAML or configuration file before the first launch. If a setup file asks for a Minecraft version and loader, set them to the release you downloaded. The official ATM9 example uses Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge loader 47.3.7, but that value is an example: confirm the exact loader pinned by your selected No Frills release before entering it. Do not copy a loader number from regular ATM9 or from a different No Frills file.
Do not remove bundled libraries, installer files or configuration folders simply because they are unfamiliar. The server pack is assembled as a set; preserve its relative paths when uploading.

3. Make Java selection explicit
Run java -version from the same account that will run the server. If it reports an incompatible version, install the runtime required by the Forge build. If it reports the right version but the script still fails, edit the script so its Java command points to the full path of the intended executable, or change the operating system’s alternatives configuration. This removes ambiguity when both an older and newer Java installation are present.
4. Set the memory in the supplied script
Use the memory options already provided by the pack’s start script and set the heap within the available physical or plan memory. Start in the 8–10 GB range when the machine can support it; never allocate all physical RAM, because the operating system and file cache also need headroom. If your hardware cannot provide more than the 6 GB guide floor, begin there and watch logs, pauses and player load before inviting more users.
Launch, accept the EULA and verify readiness
- Run the supplied start script from the server directory. Use the actual script filename included in the archive; Linux hosts commonly provide a shell script and Windows hosts commonly provide a batch script.
- Watch the console and log output during the first run. Forge may spend considerable time building caches and generating files; do not interrupt it merely because the first launch is slower than later starts.
- When the process creates
eula.txt, open it, read the Minecraft EULA and change the acceptance setting only if you agree to those terms. - Save the file and run the same start script again.
- Consider the server ready only when the console reaches its normal Done state for the selected release. A window that remains open while reporting an exception or repeated restart is not a successful launch.
- Stop the server cleanly from its console command before making configuration changes or copying a backup.
Keep the first-run log. It records the Java executable, Forge loader, mod loading errors and memory symptoms that are difficult to reconstruct after a restart.

For a local server, permit the Java server process through the computer’s firewall and configure the router’s port forwarding if players are outside your home network. The exact screens and values depend on the operating system, router and internet provider; the pack documentation does not define one universal port-forwarding recipe. For a managed host, use its networking panel and confirm that the assigned address is publicly reachable.
Test from a second connection rather than assuming that a local connection proves public access. Share the public address privately with trusted players, and avoid posting it in an open forum. If the server works locally but friends cannot connect, check the host firewall, router rule, public address and whether your internet service places you behind carrier-grade NAT.
Install the matching client profile
- Have every player install the All the Mods 9 – No Frills profile, not the regular All the Mods 9 profile.
- Select the same release number used by the server. For the files listed as 0.2, use the matching 0.2 client files.
- Use Minecraft 1.20.1 and the Forge loader shown for that server release.
- Do not independently add, remove or update individual mods. Even a seemingly harmless client-side change can cause missing-mod, registry-mismatch or handshake errors.
- Launch the profile once locally so its libraries finish installing, then enter the server address only after the server console reports Done.
When a player receives a mismatch error, compare the client and server file lists and loader values before changing Java or deleting worlds. Version identity is the first check.
Updating without damaging the world
- Stop the server cleanly and make a dated backup of the world, configuration, scripts and the current server archive.
- Copy the world to a test directory or separate test server. Never make the first launch of a new pack release against the only copy of a valued world.
- Download the new release’s matching Server-Files archive and note its Minecraft and Forge values.
- Update the server files as a complete, consistent set. Do not overlay random mods from the new archive onto the old installation.
- Install the exact same client release for every player.
- Start the test copy, inspect logs and visit important areas before scheduling the production update.
- If the test fails, restore the previous server files and world backup. Keep the old release available until the new one has been proven stable.
World compatibility is release-specific. The fact that two files both say No Frills does not establish that their worlds, registries or loader changes are interchangeable.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The installer or launch script fails immediately
- Run
java -versionand compare it with the runtime required by the Forge build. - Inspect the start script for an explicit Java path. Multiple installations can make the shell or batch file invoke a different runtime than your terminal.
- Confirm that the archive was extracted completely into a writable directory and that the script is being run from that directory.
- Read the first exception in the log rather than changing several JVM flags at once. The first error usually identifies Java, permissions or a missing file.
The server runs out of memory or pauses for long periods
- Increase the allocated heap within the physical machine or hosting plan’s limits, moving from the 6 GB floor toward the 8–10 GB practical range when available.
- Reduce view distance and other distance-heavy settings before adding speculative JVM flags.
- Check whether several players are generating new chunks simultaneously or whether an automation-heavy base is loading many entities.
- Review logs for an actual out-of-memory error. A long first startup while Forge builds caches is not, by itself, proof that the heap is too small.
Missing-mod or registry-mismatch errors appear when joining
- Confirm that both sides are using No Frills rather than one side using regular ATM9.
- Compare the exact release number, Minecraft version and Forge loader.
- Remove any independently updated, added or deleted client mods and reinstall the complete matching profile if necessary.
- If the server was updated, ensure every player updated before attempting to join again.
The server reaches Done but friends cannot connect
- Test the address from outside the host network.
- Check the computer firewall or managed-host network panel.
- Recheck the router forwarding rule and the current public address.
- Ask the internet provider whether inbound connections are blocked by carrier-grade NAT. If so, a managed host or another reachable network may be required.
The installation is corrupt or incomplete
- Stop the server and move the damaged directory aside rather than deleting it immediately.
- Extract a fresh copy of the exact Server-Files archive into a new clean directory.
- On a managed host, upload every archive member to the main server folder, preserving paths.
- Restore only the backed-up world and deliberately retained configuration after the clean files pass a test launch.
Routine operation and security
Stop the process cleanly before backups, updates or hardware moves. Keep at least one backup away from the server machine and periodically test that it can be restored. Record the exact No Frills release, Minecraft version, Forge loader, Java executable path and memory setting alongside each backup so you can reproduce a working state.
