To set up an All The Forge server, download the matching Server Files archive for your pack release, extract every file into a dedicated server folder, install the Java version required by that release, allocate at least 6 GB of memory, and run the included Windows or Linux startup script. The current project listing identifies ATFG11 v11.2.1hf for Minecraft 1.21.1 with NeoForge. An older 1.20.1 line uses Forge instead, so the release, Minecraft version, loader, Java runtime, server files and every player’s client must match.

Choose the exact All The Forge release first
All The Forge is not one permanently interchangeable download. The project listing currently shows ATFG11 v11.2.1hf for Minecraft 1.21.1 using NeoForge, while an older 1.20.1 branch uses Forge. A world created with one branch should stay on that branch unless you have a tested migration plan. Updating only the client or only the server can produce missing-mod errors, registry mismatches, rejected connections or a world that will not load.
| Release line | Minecraft version | Loader | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| ATFG11 v11.2.1hf | 1.21.1 | NeoForge | You are starting a current ATFG11 server or all players can move to this release |
| Older All The Forge line | 1.20.1 | Forge | An existing world or player group is already committed to that release |
Write down the project version, Minecraft version and loader before downloading anything. Treat that three-part combination as the server’s identity. Do not copy a 1.20.1 Forge world into a 1.21.1 NeoForge directory and expect the loader to convert it automatically.

What the pack contains and why the server is demanding
All The Forge combines technology progression with enhanced vanilla features, expanded structures and new dimensions. The project feature list names more than 100 mods, including Alex’s Mobs, Biomes O’ Plenty, Applied Energistics 2, Mekanism, Create and The Twilight Forest. That breadth is why a server needs considerably more memory and a more careful update process than an unmodded Minecraft installation.
The project describes its aim this way: “All The Forge delivers a fresh, exciting Minecraft experience built around variety, exploration, and creativity.” Variety also means more files, registries, world-generation data and configuration that must remain synchronized between server and clients.

Download the correct server files
Use the Files page for the selected release
- Open the official All The Forge project listing.
- Confirm the exact release, Minecraft version and loader you chose. For the current ATFG11 release, those are v11.2.1hf, 1.21.1 and NeoForge.
- Open the release’s Files area and select the archive labelled Server Files.
- Save the archive somewhere you can identify later, such as a folder named with the full release and loader.
The client modpack archive is not a substitute for the server archive. A client package may contain launch metadata or files that are unnecessary on a dedicated server and may omit server scripts or settings. If the Files page offers several similarly named downloads, check that the one you select explicitly says Server Files and that its version matches the clients you intend to run.
Keep one source of truth
Do not mix files from different releases to “fix” a startup error. Replacing one mod with a file from another Minecraft version can create a problem that looks unrelated. If you need to change releases, make a separate server directory, install the complete matching archive there and copy a backup of the world only after confirming that the pack supports the move.
Prepare the computer or host
Memory
The server documentation calls for at least 6 GB of allocated RAM. That is an allocation floor, not a recommendation to make the entire machine unavailable to the operating system. Leave additional memory for the operating system, Java overhead, scheduled backups, monitoring and any other services on the machine. On a shared computer, closing memory-heavy applications can matter as much as changing the Java allocation.

A managed host’s advertised plan size is not automatically equal to usable Java heap. Check how much memory the provider actually assigns to the Minecraft process, whether memory is shared with a control panel, and whether upgrades can be made without rebuilding the server.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesJava
Use the Java major version required by the selected pack. For current Minecraft 1.21.1 ATFG11 with NeoForge, Java 21 is the practical runtime target. The older 1.20.1 Forge line can have a different requirement, so verify the release’s instructions and the host’s available Java image instead of assuming that Java 21 works for every branch.
Before launching, check the runtime from the same account that will run the server. A system may have several Java installations, and a control panel may select a different one from the command line. The reported major version should match the pack’s requirement; otherwise the script can fail immediately or stop while loading mods.
Storage and permissions
Use a dedicated directory with enough free space for the extracted pack, generated chunks, logs, backups and future updates. Give the account running the server read and write access to that directory. Avoid putting the live world inside a synchronised consumer folder where a sync conflict can overwrite files while Java is writing them.
Install the server files
- Create a new, empty server directory named for the release, such as one that identifies ATFG11, 1.21.1 and NeoForge.
- Extract the complete Server Files archive into that directory. Preserve its folder structure; do not extract only the apparent mods folder.
- If you are using a third-party host, upload all extracted contents to the host’s main server folder, as the server guide instructs.
- Confirm that the supplied Windows batch script or Linux shell script is present alongside the extracted files.
- Keep the downloaded archive outside the live directory as an untouched recovery copy.
“Complete” matters because the pack can include libraries, configuration, launch arguments and scripts in addition to mods. Uploading only a subset commonly leads to a missing-file or wrong-loader error that is misdiagnosed as a Java problem.

First launch and the EULA
- Run the included Windows startup script on Windows, or the included Linux shell startup script on Linux. Use the script supplied with the selected release rather than inventing a new command line.
- Allow the first launch to create its folders, libraries, configuration files and logs. The first run can take longer than later starts.
- When the process stops or reports that the Minecraft EULA must be accepted, open the generated EULA file and read it.
- If you agree to the EULA, change the acceptance entry as instructed by the generated file, save it, and close the server cleanly.
- Run the same startup script again and watch the console until it reaches a ready state. Stop it with the server’s normal stop command before editing files or taking a backup.
Do not repeatedly launch a half-created directory after a failed first run. Read the earliest error in the log, correct the underlying version, Java, memory or file problem, then start again. Later stack traces often describe the consequence rather than the cause.
Configure the running server
Server properties
After the first successful generation, edit the server-properties file for game rules, difficulty, access mode, view settings, player limits and the listening port you intend to expose. The sources do not establish universal All The Forge defaults for these values, so choose them for your world and network rather than copying an alleged pack-wide setting.
Change one group of settings at a time, stop the server cleanly, make the edit, and restart. Keep a dated copy of the file so you can identify which change caused a new startup or connection problem.
Operator access and whitelist
Grant operator permissions only to trusted accounts and enable a whitelist when the server is private. Test an ordinary player account as well as an operator account; excessive permissions can hide a problem that regular players will encounter.

A self-hosted server must be reachable through the computer’s local firewall and, when players connect from outside your home network, through the router’s port-forwarding rule. Forward the same port configured in server properties to the machine running Java, restrict the rule to the needed protocol and avoid exposing unrelated administration services. A managed host normally supplies the public endpoint and handles the edge firewall, but you still need to check its panel for the assigned address and port.

Backups
Back up the world, configuration, scripts and any server-specific changes. Stop the server before making a full file copy so region and player data are consistent. Keep at least one backup away from the live machine and periodically test restoring it into a separate directory; a backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.
Make every client match
Every player must install the identical All The Forge release, Minecraft version and loader as the server. For current ATFG11, that means Minecraft 1.21.1 with NeoForge and the same pack release. Have players remove or isolate older profiles rather than adding the new pack’s files to an existing profile.
- Compare the displayed pack version, not just the pack name.
- Confirm the Minecraft version and loader in the launcher profile.
- Allow the launcher to finish downloading all client-side files before connecting.
- Do not add extra mods until the server is stable; an extra client-only mod can still cause a connection failure if it changes required registries or configuration.
If one player cannot connect while others can, compare that player’s profile and latest log with a working player’s profile. The first useful clue is usually the version or loader named near the beginning of the disconnect message.

Self-hosting means you supply the computer, internet connection, Java installation and administration. A managed service supplies a prepared control panel and server environment, but you trade some low-level control for convenience and a recurring bill. Neither option has a universal player capacity or performance figure established here; actual results depend on hardware, simulation load, world size, view settings and network location.
| Decision factor | Self-hosted computer | Managed Minecraft host |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Existing hardware may avoid a new server purchase, but electricity, storage and network equipment remain your responsibility | Usually a recurring plan charge; current prices depend on provider, location and memory tier |
| Setup effort | You install Java, extract files, configure the firewall and handle updates | The panel can simplify deployment, but you still upload the correct Server Files archive and select a compatible Java image |
| File and JVM control | Full control over directories, scripts, Java arguments and backups | Control varies by plan and panel; confirm whether custom JVM settings and file access are allowed |
| Backups and restore | You design, schedule and test the backup process | Some plans provide automated snapshots; check retention, download and restore limits |
| Latency | Depends on your upload connection and the location of your home network | Choose a data-center location close to most players, subject to available regions |
| Version support | You can retain an older release as long as your Java and hardware support it | Verify that the panel offers the exact Minecraft and Forge or NeoForge combination you need |
| Scaling | Upgrade hardware or move the directory yourself | Often easier to increase a memory tier, but migration and export policies differ |
| Migration | You already possess the complete directory and can copy it to another machine | Confirm that world, configuration and log files can be downloaded before committing |
When self-hosting makes sense
Choose self-hosting when you want direct access to every file and JVM setting, already have a reliable always-on machine, can manage router and firewall changes, and are comfortable owning backups and recovery. It is also useful when you need to preserve an older Forge release that a host no longer offers.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
When managed hosting makes sense
Choose managed hosting when you want a public endpoint without configuring a home router, need a machine in a different geographic region, or prefer a control panel and provider support. Before paying, verify the exact Java version, loader support, memory allocation, backup tools, world download process and cancellation terms.
Named partner offer
The official server-file listing identifies AMPZ Network as partnered with BisectHosting and says the service is preconfigured after purchase. It also lists code AMPZ for 25% off the first month for a new client. Treat that as a promotional lead, not a permanent price: confirm that the partnership, code, eligibility, geography, billing terms and discount are still active at checkout.
Troubleshoot the failures that matter most
“Incompatible” or missing-mod errors
Check the server’s complete release archive, the client’s pack version, Minecraft version and loader. A current NeoForge client cannot join a 1.20.1 Forge server. Reinstall the matching Server Files archive in a clean directory instead of adding individual files from another release.
The script closes immediately
Run it from a terminal so the error remains visible. Confirm the Java major version, available memory, file permissions and working directory. If the script refers to a file that is absent, the archive was not fully extracted or the wrong download was used.
The server stops while loading mods
Read the first error naming a mod, dependency or registry. Confirm that all files came from one release and that the process has at least the documented 6 GB allocation plus operating-system headroom. Remove only a change you made yourself; do not delete a required mod as a guess.
Players time out or cannot see the server
Test from the host machine first, then from the same local network, then from an external connection. Check the configured port, local firewall, router forwarding and the address supplied to players. A managed host may use a non-default port shown in its panel, so players must use the complete endpoint rather than assuming a standard one.
The world becomes unstable after an update
Stop the server, restore the last known-good world and pack directory, and test the new release in a separate copy. Do not overwrite the only backup with a world opened by a different loader or Minecraft version.
Pre-launch checklist
- The project release, Minecraft version and loader are written down.
- The download is explicitly labelled Server Files.
- The entire archive is extracted or uploaded, including scripts and configuration.
- The Java runtime matches the selected release; Java 21 is the practical target for current 1.21.1 NeoForge ATFG11.
- At least 6 GB is allocated to the server, with memory left for the operating system and other services.
- The first launch generated files, the EULA was accepted where required, and the server restarted cleanly.
- Server properties, operator access, whitelist, firewall and port forwarding are configured for the intended audience.
- A tested backup exists outside the live directory.
- Every player has the identical pack release, Minecraft version and loader.
Bottom line
For a new installation, use ATFG11 v11.2.1hf with Minecraft 1.21.1 and NeoForge, download its dedicated Server Files archive, extract everything, allocate at least 6 GB, run the supplied startup script and complete the EULA restart. Keep older 1.20.1 Forge worlds on their original release unless you have verified a migration. Self-hosting offers maximum control; managed hosting reduces network and maintenance work, but you must still verify version support, memory, backups, location and current terms before purchasing.
