Renewing a subscription ECS instance and changing its size are two separate decisions. Renew first, so the server keeps running. Then choose how to change the configuration. You can upgrade now, which applies to the current billing cycle. Or you can renew with a downgrade, which applies from the next cycle. This playbook covers the console steps, the expiry timeline, how upgrade fees work, and the restrictions that catch administrators out. It is based on Alibaba Cloud’s official documentation. It has not been hands-on tested, so check every price and option against your own order page.
What happens after a subscription ECS instance expires?
Alibaba Cloud’s billing FAQ says an expired subscription instance stops. You can recover it by renewing for up to 15 days. If you do not renew in that period, the instance and its data are permanently released at 00:00 on day 16. Treat expiry as an operational incident, not a billing reminder. Check the live instance status in the console, because resource states and lifecycle stages matter.

Subscription periods follow calendar months and years, not fixed 30-day blocks. Alibaba Cloud’s subscription documentation gives an example: a one-month subscription bought on a date in February expires on the matching date in March. Read the exact expiration timestamp in the console and do not count days.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesNot every resource shares the same billing method or retention clock. A subscription instance can still incur pay-as-you-go charges for separately billed resources or features, according to the same subscription page. Check each attached item individually.
#1 Best Overall
Step 0: Inventory before you change anything
- Region, billing method and exact expiration timestamp.
- Current instance type, disks and their billing methods.
- Public bandwidth billing.
- Auto-renewal state.
- Any pay-as-you-go items attached to the subscription.
- Application health and capacity metrics (CPU, memory, network), which tell you whether you need more, the same, or less.
- A current backup of important data.
How do I renew an expiring instance?
The manual renewal guide describes this flow:
- Open the ECS console and select the region that holds the instance.
- Find the instance and use Renew, shown below the Expiration Time field.
- Choose a renewal duration.
- Confirm the charges and complete payment.
The guide says several instances can be renewed together. Afterwards, confirm that the new expiration time appears and the instance status is correct.
Upgrade now or renew with a downgrade?
| Question | Upgrade (type change) | Renew and downgrade |
|---|---|---|
| When it applies | The current billing cycle (type change guide) | The existing configuration continues through the rest of the current cycle. The new one applies in the renewal cycle (downgrade guide) |
| Typical reason | Current vCPU, memory or other supported capacity is insufficient | Forecast demand is lower, or the instance is over-provisioned |
| What can change | Supported target instance types | Instance type within the same family, public bandwidth, or data-disk billing method |
| Availability window | Subject to a console pre-check | From 15 days before expiration until release |
| Interruption | Subscription type changes require a restart | Applies at the start of the next cycle; plan for the change then |
| Price | Shown on the live order page | Shown on the live order page |
How are upgrade fees calculated?
For a subscription instance, the upgrade charge depends on the new configuration and on the remaining value and duration of the old one (subscription documentation). The result varies by account, region and configuration. Use the amount on the order page, not a generic figure from a blog or a price list.

Upgrading in the current cycle
Check eligibility first
The type change guide says several things can limit a change: the instance family, the instance state, the target type, stock in the zone, and pending changes. Run the console’s pre-check before you book a maintenance window. This avoids planning downtime for a change that cannot be ordered.
Plan for the restart
The configuration change overview warns that changes may briefly interrupt service, and that subscription type changes need a restart. Stateful workloads may need a switchover or scheduled maintenance. The same page says: “The platform guarantees only that the instance can start with the new resources.” Starting is not the same as working. Test that the application, such as JVM heap settings, database buffers or licensing tied to hardware, behaves correctly with the new size.
Rank #3
Renewing with a downgrade
This option is documented from 15 days before expiration until release (guide). It can lower the instance type within the same family, alter public bandwidth, or change the data-disk billing method. The current configuration stays in place for the rest of the cycle. The new one starts with the renewal period.
One trade-off matters here. If you order the downgrade before expiration, some configuration actions are restricted for the remainder of the current cycle. If you might still need to upgrade this month, read the restrictions on the order page before you commit.

Recommended sequence
- Inventory the instance as above and back up the data.
- If the size is right, renew at the same configuration and confirm the duration and charges.
- If capacity must grow, run the type-change pre-check, read the live fee, then schedule the restart window.
- If next cycle’s need is lower, open the renew-and-downgrade option, read its restrictions, then order.
- Afterwards, verify the instance state, configuration, billing order and application health.
This guide covers the console workflow. It does not provide a complete API runbook for combined renewal and upgrade. If you automate, use the operation-specific API documentation. Policies, eligible types, zone stock and console labels change, so confirm them in your own account before you act.
