Alexa Voice Calling: How to Call Contacts and Phone Numbers

Alexa voice calling lets you make hands-free calls through supported Echo devices or the Alexa app, with limits on countries and number types.

Alexa voice calling is Amazon’s Alexa Communication feature for making hands-free calls between supported Echo devices and the Alexa app, and for calling certain mobile and landline numbers. It is separate from Drop In, an optional intercom feature that connects automatically rather than waiting for the recipient to answer.

What Alexa voice calling means

Amazon describes Alexa Calling and Messaging as a way to call and message between supported Echo devices and the Alexa app. You can call another Alexa Communication user, a group, or—where supported—a phone number. An Echo is not required for every call because the Alexa app is also a supported calling route. Amazon’s Alexa Calling and Messaging FAQ describes the feature and its availability.

Who and what you can call

Alexa can connect you to an Alexa contact on a supported Echo device or in the Alexa app. Amazon also documents outbound calls to mobile and landline numbers in the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Mexico, at no additional cost according to its FAQ. Availability can vary by device and feature, so check Amazon’s current guidance for your location.

For voice commands, Amazon gives examples such as “Call [Name’s] Echo,” “Call [Name’s] mobile,” “Call [Name] at work,” and “Call [group name] group.” You can also use the Alexa app: open More > Communicate, open your contacts, then choose a person or group. App labels may change over time. See Amazon’s Alexa calling instructions and app calling guidance.

Calling with Alexa versus Drop In

A regular Alexa call works like a call: the recipient is notified and answers. Drop In is an optional intercom feature that automatically connects to a supported device, so the receiving person does not answer in the same way. Household devices can connect to one another; Drop In with contacts outside the household requires permission from both sides. Amazon explains the distinction in its Drop In help page.

The Alexa app can Drop In on a device, but a device cannot Drop In on the Alexa app. Amazon’s guidance for the Echo Show 8 (2025 release) and Echo Show 11 (2025 release) describes audio or camera-enabled Drop In when the feature is enabled. That camera guidance applies to Drop In; it does not establish ordinary calling support for every Echo model. Read Amazon’s Echo Show camera guidance.

Number and emergency-call limits

Alexa Calling is not an emergency-calling service. Amazon says it cannot call emergency numbers such as 911, premium-rate numbers, three-digit or abbreviated codes, dial-by-letter numbers, or international numbers outside the supported countries. Check Amazon’s voice calling restrictions and app calling restrictions before relying on a particular number type.

Does Alexa have a phone-contact limit?

Amazon help pages give conflicting limits: its detailed Alexa Communication FAQ says outbound calling can cover up to 100 phone numbers in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and the U.K., while its separate Alexa-to-Phone Contacts page says each household profile can choose up to 10 numbers. Amazon does not clarify how these figures relate. If the limit affects your setup, check the current Alexa app settings or contact Amazon support rather than assuming one number applies universally.
