Aldi came out cheaper in two recent local grocery-basket comparisons, but neither establishes a nationwide winner. The results suggest Aldi is a good place to start for a basic basket; your total depends on your local prices, the products you choose, and whether you count promotions.

Two 2026 comparisons found Aldi’s matched basket cost less overall, though Walmart was cheaper on some items and promotions affected category results.

These are local snapshots, not a forecast of what shoppers elsewhere will pay. A separate 2026 Southeast reference sheet also shows mixed item-level results: it lists Aldi bananas at $0.33 per pound versus Walmart at $0.50 per pound, but hamburger buns at $1.55 at Aldi versus $1.43 at Walmart. That sheet excludes weekly sales and coupons, warns that prices vary by area, and notes that some compared products and brands were not identical. Treat those figures as examples, not current local quotes.
A 2025 comparison by The Kitchn likewise found Aldi cheaper on several listed items: 12-count cage-free eggs were reported at $3.49 versus $4.94, chicken breast at $3.89 per pound versus $4.77, 12-ounce almond butter at $3.39 versus $5.23, and same-size olive oil at $6.39 versus $7.14. Those are historical reported prices, not today’s prices.

Why the cheaper store can change with your list
Stores do not carry identical assortments
Aldi’s assortment is primarily private label, while Walmart carries a broader mix. Comparing a national brand at Walmart with an Aldi store brand may not be like for like. Match the product as closely as you can, including type, grade, brand or store-brand tier, organic status, package quantity, and other quality attributes.
Package size can hide the real price
A lower shelf price does not necessarily mean a lower cost for the same amount of food. Compare unit prices—such as price per ounce, pound, item, or count—and calculate the cost for the quantity you will actually use. Salina311 normalized differing package sizes in its 2026 basket; Consumers’ Checkbook says it modifies its market basket to account for brand differences.

Promotions can shift a category or basket
Decide whether you are comparing regular shelf prices or the amount you can pay after offers. The Salina311 comparison left promotions out, while the Bentonville comparison included Walmart rollbacks and reported that those offers changed which store won the beverage category. Check whether a promotion is available to you and whether its terms match how you shop.
How to compare the stores for your own groceries
- Start with your usual list. Compare the items and quantities you actually buy rather than counting wins on an arbitrary selection of products.
- Match product specifications. Check type, grade, package quantity, organic status, and brand or store-brand tier. If products differ materially, note that rather than treating them as exact equivalents.
- Compare unit prices. Use the same unit for both stores and account for the quantity you need. This avoids mistaking a smaller package’s lower ticket price for better value.
- Choose a promotion rule. Decide whether to include rollbacks, coupons, and loyalty offers, then apply that rule consistently to both stores.
- Check nearby stores in the same week. Prices and availability vary by area and over time. A fair comparison needs current prices for the stores you would actually visit.
What broader price surveys do—and do not—show
Consumers’ Checkbook identified Walmart among conventional supermarkets with consistently low prices in the markets it surveyed. It reported that the discounters in its low-price group were typically 12–30% below each area’s all-store average; that figure is not a claim that Walmart is 12–30% cheaper than Aldi. Checkbook also explains that Aldi mostly carries its own brands and that its comparison uses a modified basket to account for brand differences.

A WTOP report on Consumer Reports research describes price comparisons against Walmart across six U.S. cities. It notes that unit prices were used for bulk items at Costco and that some products were unavailable at certain stores. The available findings do not establish a national Aldi-versus-Walmart result.

For a comparable basic basket, Aldi is a reasonable first store to check: it had the lower total in both cited 2026 local comparisons. But Walmart can be cheaper on particular items, and an offer may change the result. The only reliable answer for your own shopping is the total for your matched list at nearby stores, using current prices and a consistent rule for promotions.
