You can use an Airtel India SIM outside India if international roaming is enabled and Airtel supports roaming in your destination. For prepaid, keep your base service validity active and choose either a roaming pack or the ₹118 activation option; the latter allows usage at standard rates rather than bundling calls or data. Postpaid users can enable roaming with or without a pack, but standard-rate use can be costly. Check your destination and account’s live terms in the Airtel app before departure.
Can I use my Airtel SIM outside India?
Yes, subject to destination coverage and activation. Airtel says international roaming is disabled by default. Buying a roaming pack enables the service; postpaid customers can also enable roaming without buying a pack and pay standard rates for usage. Prepaid customers need valid underlying service and must choose a roaming pack or the ₹118 activation option. Airtel’s international roaming terms and live recharge page are the places to confirm current conditions.

Airtel described its roaming portfolio as covering 189 countries in an April 25, 2025 announcement. That is the company’s stated portfolio figure, not an independently audited guarantee that every plan works in every country. Verify your specific destination, pack and account eligibility before travel.

- Check your destination and account type. In the Airtel app or on its live recharge page, confirm that your country is covered and review the pack or standard-rate terms that apply to your prepaid or postpaid account.
- Choose how you will pay for use. Prepaid customers can buy a roaming pack or pay ₹118 for 28-day service activation at standard rates. Postpaid customers can buy a pack or enable roaming without one and incur standard charges.
- Confirm that roaming is enabled before leaving. Buying a pack enables the service, according to Airtel. For postpaid roaming without a pack, enable the service through the Airtel app or call center.
- On arrival, connect to a supported network and make chargeable use if you have a pack. Airtel’s validity rules tie pack activation to first chargeable use abroad; details differ between prepaid and postpaid.
Do not assume a pack, rate or destination list shown earlier will remain unchanged: Airtel’s page is dynamic, and offers can depend on country and account.

Which prepaid roaming option should I choose?
The main choice is between a bundled roaming pack and ₹118 activation. The ₹118 option is not a travel bundle: calls, data and outgoing SMS are charged at standard rates. A bundled pack is more predictable if you expect to use data or make calls, but check its country-specific allowances and validity before buying.
| Listed price | Validity | Listed benefits |
|---|---|---|
| ₹698 | 1 day | 1 GB, 100 combined incoming/outgoing minutes, 10 SMS |
| ₹998 | 5 days | 4 GB, 150 combined incoming/outgoing minutes, 20 SMS |
| ₹1,298 | 10 days | 6 GB, 200 combined incoming/outgoing minutes, 20 SMS |
| ₹2,998 | 30 days | 10 GB, 300 combined incoming/outgoing minutes, 20 SMS |
| ₹118 | 28 days | Service activation and incoming SMS; data, calls and outgoing SMS at standard rates |
These are examples listed on Airtel’s official prepaid recharge page, not guaranteed offers for every customer or destination. The ₹698 entry is a prepaid listing; it is not necessarily the same purchase arrangement as the postpaid daily mechanism described below. Confirm the current price, benefits and country coverage on the Airtel recharge page.

What the ₹118 option does—and does not do
Airtel’s prepaid terms describe ₹118 as 28-day international roaming service activation. It permits incoming SMS; data, calls and outgoing SMS are charged at standard rates from the main balance. You must have an active prepaid pack with valid service validity. If that validity expires, roaming cannot be used under this option. If your main balance is insufficient, Airtel says only incoming SMS is permitted. Check Airtel’s terms before relying on this option, especially if you expect to use data or make calls.
How does postpaid roaming work without a pack?
Postpaid customers can enable international roaming through the Airtel app or call center without buying a pack. Usage is charged at standard rates and billed monthly. Airtel says the service remains enabled until the customer explicitly disables it.

Airtel’s ₹698 daily Roam-Without-Fear mechanism
For eligible postpaid customers in a pack-covered country, Airtel describes a daily mechanism when roaming is enabled and usage begins without a preselected pack. Standard rates apply first; once daily charges exceed ₹698, Airtel automatically activates a ₹698 one-day pack. Airtel lists 1 GB, 100 incoming/outgoing minutes for calls to India and local numbers, 10 outgoing SMS and unlimited incoming SMS until 11:59 p.m. in the visited country’s local time.
After included allowances are used, Airtel says data speed falls to 80 kbps and additional calls or SMS are charged at discounted rates. The accrued pack is billed in the next bill cycle, and Airtel’s terms say those charges are not waived. This is a described postpaid mechanism, not a user-selected pack or a guarantee of eligibility in every country or account. Airtel notes that benefits and thresholds may change. See the current roaming terms for conditions.

When does a roaming pack start, and when does it expire?
Postpaid
Airtel says a postpaid pack is activated and charged after the SIM connects to an international network in a covered country and makes its first chargeable use, such as a call, SMS or data use. Validity is counted in the visited country’s local time; Airtel’s example says the first day ends at 11:59 p.m. local time. If you make no chargeable use during the stay, Airtel says pack rental will not be charged. Consult the international roaming pack information for the applicable terms.

Prepaid
Prepaid packs are paid for upfront. Airtel says validity begins after the SIM connects to an international network and makes its first chargeable use abroad. Airtel’s eSIM travel guidance says packs can be purchased up to 365 days before departure and activate on arrival and use; because advance-purchase terms may change, verify the current in-app conditions before relying on that window. See Airtel’s eSIM travel guidance.

Will my Airtel number receive OTPs abroad?
Airtel’s terms say incoming SMS is permitted under the ₹118 prepaid activation option, and its listed roaming packs include SMS benefits. That supports receiving SMS in eligible circumstances, but it is not a guarantee that every bank or service will deliver an OTP to your number in every destination. Check your account’s current roaming conditions and keep the Airtel SIM connected to a supported network. Airtel’s roaming terms do not establish universal OTP delivery.
Can I use Airtel Wi-Fi Calling while roaming internationally?
No. Airtel’s Wi-Fi Calling FAQ answers this directly: “No, you cannot use WiFi calling in International Roaming.” Hotel or other Wi-Fi alone therefore should not be treated as a way to keep Airtel calling service available while the SIM is roaming. See Airtel’s Wi-Fi Calling FAQ.
How can I avoid unexpected roaming use?
- Turn off automatic downloads and close apps that may use data in the background; Airtel specifically advises both precautions.
- Before travel, deactivate call diverts or voicemail by dialing
##002#, as Airtel’s roaming terms advise. - Check which calls, data and SMS count against your pack and what happens after allowances are exhausted.
- Do not assume ordinary pack discounts apply to in-flight Aero Mobile, premium or satellite, maritime, or ship-cruise calls; Airtel says they do not.
- For assistance, Airtel lists 121 from India and +91 99100 99100 from abroad.
