Choose AirPods 5 if you want an open fit and a lower price
AirPods 5 are the better fit for someone who dislikes silicone tips or prefers earbuds that do not seal inside the ear canal. They also cost less: Apple lists the Charging Case version at $129 and the Wireless Charging Case version at $149 in the U.S. The case configuration matters, so check which one you are buying.
Noise-control features depend on the AirPods 5 configuration. Apple’s lineup page lists Adaptive Audio and ANC, but ANC is configuration-specific; verify the exact version before buying if noise cancellation is important.

Choose AirPods Pro 3 for noise cancellation and an in-ear seal
Pro 3 is the stronger choice if you want silicone ear tips and more isolation from surrounding sound. Its five included tip sizes give you options for fit, though neither the listed sizes nor Apple’s product claims can determine which pair will feel comfortable in your ears. Apple advertises up to three times more ANC than AirPods 5; that figure is a manufacturer comparison, not an independent measurement.
Pro 3 also offers Transparency, Adaptive Audio, and Conversation Awareness. Those modes give you alternatives to fully blocking outside sound, but they do not change the basic trade-off: an in-ear sealed fit versus AirPods 5’s open-fit design.

Pro 3 adds hearing and workout features
Apple lists Hearing Test, Hearing Aid, and Hearing Protection for AirPods Pro 3, while those features are unavailable on AirPods 5 in Apple’s comparison. Availability of the hearing features depends on region, so check Apple’s local product information before relying on them.

How long does the battery last with ANC?
Apple states up to 8 hours per charge for AirPods Pro 3 with ANC. For AirPods 5, Apple states up to 4 hours, or up to 5 hours for the Wireless Charging Case configuration. These are manufacturer maximums, not guaranteed everyday runtimes; actual battery life can vary with use and settings.

At Apple’s 2026 U.S. listed prices, Pro 3 costs $100 more than the $149 AirPods 5 Wireless Charging Case version and $120 more than the $129 Charging Case version. The extra cost buys a different fit and additional listed features—not a universally better experience. Paying more makes sense if you specifically value ANC, silicone tips, hearing functions, workout heart-rate sensing, or the longer stated ANC runtime. If you want open-fit earbuds and the lower price, AirPods 5 is the more direct choice.

Apple’s product pages establish its specifications and claims, but they do not settle which model sounds better or fits better for an individual. Comfort and sound preference are personal; if possible, try the fit before choosing.
