What’s the difference between Noise Cancellation and Transparency on AirPods Pro?
The simplest distinction is how much outside sound you want to hear. Noise Cancellation works to reduce it; Transparency brings it through so you can hear what is happening around you. Neither mode guarantees that every sound will be removed or heard exactly as it sounds without earbuds.

How Noise Cancellation works
Apple says outward-facing microphones detect external sounds and the AirPods generate anti-noise to counter them. An inward-facing microphone detects unwanted sound inside the ear, which is also countered. The result is noise reduction, not a promise of silence. A good fit matters to how well this mode works. What Transparency does
Transparency is intended to let outside sound through so you can hear what is going on around you. Apple describes it this way: “Transparency mode lets outside sound in so you can hear what’s going on around you.” The mode can be customized using accessibility settings on AirPods Pro; those adjustments change how sound comes through, but are not a substitute for professional hearing advice.

What is Adaptive Audio on AirPods Pro?
Adaptive Audio combines aspects of Noise Cancellation and Transparency and automatically adjusts the amount of noise control in response to changing environmental sound. As Apple puts it, it “automatically adjusts the level of noise control based on the changing noise conditions in your environment.” It is useful when your surroundings vary and you do not want to keep switching between fixed modes.
Apple’s current guidance identifies Adaptive Audio support on AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3, with compatible software required. Availability and the controls you see depend on the AirPods model and the connected device’s operating-system version. Check Apple’s mode overview and switching instructions for the model and software you use. On supported devices, you can adjust how much sound Adaptive Audio allows.

How do I switch AirPods Pro listening modes?
Apple documents switching with AirPods controls and from a connected Apple device. The available modes differ by model, and interface labels can vary by software version.

Use the AirPods Pro stem
- Wear your AirPods Pro and press and hold the force sensor on the stem.
- Release it when the selected listening mode changes. The modes included in the cycle depend on the settings and model.
Use iPhone or iPad
- Connect your AirPods Pro, then open Control Center.
- Touch and hold the volume control to open the listening-mode choices.
- Select Noise Cancellation, Transparency, or another mode available for your model.

How can I customize Transparency?
On AirPods Pro, Apple provides Transparency adjustments in Headphone Accommodations. Depending on the device and software, options include amplification, Transparency balance, tone, and ambient-noise reduction. The same customization area includes Own Voice Amplification and Conversation Boost, an accessibility option intended to help focus on a nearby speaker.
To find the controls, open Settings on your iPhone or iPad, go to Accessibility, select Audio & Visual, then Headphone Accommodations. Follow the on-screen controls for Transparency. Why isn’t Noise Cancellation working well?
Start with fit: Apple says Noise Cancellation and Transparency work best when AirPods Pro fit well. If the earbuds do not seal comfortably, noise reduction may be weaker. Then verify that Noise Cancellation is selected rather than Transparency or another mode.

- Check the selected mode. Use the stem control or your connected device’s listening-mode controls to confirm Noise Cancellation is on.
- Check fit. Adjust how the AirPods sit in your ears and use Apple’s fit guidance for your model.
- Review settings. If the mode controls are unavailable or behavior seems unexpected, check the AirPods settings and the software version of the connected device.
- Reset only if needed. Apple includes resetting AirPods among its troubleshooting steps when noise control does not behave as expected. A reset is not guaranteed to resolve every cause. Follow the applicable instructions in Apple’s noise-control overview and troubleshooting guide.
