If your AirPods will not connect, first check that both earbuds are charging, Bluetooth is on, and the AirPods are selected as the audio output. If they still fail, forget the old pairing and pair them again; reset them only after that. The right pairing control depends on the model: AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 3 use front-of-case taps, while earlier earbud models use the rear setup button.
Identify what is failing
- They do not appear in Bluetooth: Check charge, pairing mode, distance, and whether they have connected to another nearby device.
- They appear but will not connect: Forget the existing pairing, then enter pairing mode again. Reset if that does not work.
- They connect but there is no sound: Select AirPods as the audio output; a Bluetooth connection alone does not guarantee sound is routed to them.
- Only one AirPod works: Confirm both earbuds are charging, then re-pair them together. Incomplete Apple Account or Find My setup can also leave only one earbud paired.
- They disconnect repeatedly: Update the host device, charge the AirPods, remove the old pairing, and test them with another device.
- They work with an iPhone but not a Mac: Connect them manually in Mac Bluetooth settings and select them as the sound output. Automatic switching has additional requirements.
- They fail on Android or Windows: Pair them as Bluetooth headphones; Apple-specific features are not all available on those platforms.
- You have AirPods Max: Use the headphones’ listening-mode button, not the earbud case instructions.
Try these quick checks first
- Put both AirPods in the case, make sure they are seated, and check that both are charging. Charge the case if its light does not respond or the earbuds may be depleted.
- Keep the open case near the device you want to connect.
- Turn Bluetooth off and back on in the device’s Bluetooth settings, rather than relying only on a shortcut panel.
- Move away from other nearby devices that may automatically reconnect to the AirPods.
- Use the device’s audio-output selector to check that sound is not going to its built-in speaker, a car stereo, a television, or another accessory.
- Restart the phone, tablet, or computer before changing more settings.
Apple’s AirPods connection steps likewise begin with current device software, charging, Bluetooth, and checking the selected audio output.
Pair or re-pair AirPods with an iPhone or iPad
Enter pairing mode
- Open Settings > Bluetooth and make sure Bluetooth is on.
- Place both AirPods in the case and open the lid.
- Use the control for your model until the status light flashes white.
- Hold the open case near the iPhone or iPad and follow the on-screen instructions.
| Model | Pairing control |
|---|---|
| AirPods 1, 2, or 3; AirPods Pro 1 or 2 | Press and hold the setup button on the back of the case until the light flashes white. |
| AirPods 4, either model; AirPods Pro 3 | Double-tap the front of the case until the light flashes white. |
| AirPods Max | Remove them from the Smart Case and hold the listening-mode button for about five seconds, until the light flashes white. |
Apple’s pairing guide documents these model-specific controls. A green or otherwise illuminated case light does not by itself mean the AirPods are in pairing mode; look for a flashing white light.
If the AirPods appear but will not connect
- In Settings > Bluetooth, tap the information button beside the AirPods.
- Tap Forget This Device and confirm.
- Close the case for at least 30 seconds, then open it.
- Enter pairing mode using the correct model-specific control and pair again.
Apple’s reset and reconnection instructions call for removing the existing pairing first when the AirPods are listed under My Devices.

Reset AirPods if re-pairing fails
Resetting clears the existing pairing state, so you will need to connect the AirPods again afterward. Forget them from Bluetooth first if they are listed.
AirPods 1, 2, or 3; AirPods Pro 1 or 2
- Put both AirPods in the case, close the lid, and wait 30 seconds.
- On a paired iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Bluetooth and forget the AirPods if they appear.
- Open the case lid.
- Press and hold the rear setup button for about 15 seconds, until the light flashes amber and then white.
- With the case open and near the device, pair the AirPods again.
AirPods 4 or AirPods Pro 3
- Put both AirPods in the case, close the lid, and wait 30 seconds.
- Forget them from Settings > Bluetooth if listed.
- Open the lid. Double-tap the front of the case while the status light is on.
- Double-tap again when the light flashes white, then double-tap a third time when it flashes faster.
- Wait for the light to flash amber and then white, then pair again.
These newer cases do not use the traditional rear-button reset. If the light never flashes white, Apple recommends closing the case for 20 seconds, reopening it, and repeating the model-specific reset sequence. See Apple’s reset guide.

Connect AirPods to a Mac
Pair manually and choose the sound output
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth on.
- Put both earbuds in their case, open the lid, and enter pairing mode using the correct model control.
- Select Connect beside the AirPods under nearby devices.
- If sound still comes from the Mac speakers, open Control Center > Sound and select the AirPods.
Apple lists Mac compatibility by model: AirPods 2 require macOS Mojave 10.14.4 or later; AirPods Pro 1 require macOS Catalina 10.15.1 or later; AirPods 3 require macOS Monterey or later; and AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, and AirPods 4 require the latest macOS. Check Apple’s Mac connection guide for current model-specific requirements.
Automatic switching is not the same as pairing
Automatic switching among iPhone, iPad, and Mac depends on compatible software, the same Apple Account on each device, and two-factor authentication. Apple lists macOS Big Sur or later, iOS 14 or later, and iPadOS 14 or later for the switching scenario in its device connection guidance. If switching does not happen, connect manually from Bluetooth or the audio-output controls.

Connect to Android, Windows, or another Bluetooth device
- Open the device’s Bluetooth settings and turn Bluetooth on.
- Put the AirPods in their case and open the lid.
- Enter pairing mode: double-tap the case front for AirPods 4 or AirPods Pro 3; for other earbud models, hold the rear setup button until the light flashes white.
- Select the AirPods from the Bluetooth device list.
AirPods can act as a Bluetooth headset for listening and calls with non-Apple devices, but Siri is unavailable in that setup. Microphone behavior and other functions depend on the device and its software; do not expect automatic switching, Find My, or the full Apple settings experience. Apple’s Bluetooth-device instructions cover non-Apple pairing.
Check the audio output when connected AirPods stay silent
- iPhone or iPad: Open the AirPlay or audio-output picker and choose the AirPods.
- Mac: Open Control Center or the Sound output controls and choose the AirPods.
- Android or Windows: Set the AirPods as the active Bluetooth output; select them as the microphone/input too if the device offers a separate control.
- Any device: Check volume and make sure another accessory has not taken over the output.
This is often an output-selection issue rather than a failed Bluetooth connection. Apple specifically tells Mac users to select AirPods as the output if sound continues through the speakers in its Mac instructions.

Fix one AirPod or incomplete setup
- Check that both earbuds are seated in the case and charging. Remove and reseat the affected earbud; if contacts look dirty, clean cautiously without liquid or unsupported cleaning methods.
- Forget the AirPods, then pair both earbuds together again. Reset the pair if needed using the model-specific instructions above.
- Test the same earbud with another compatible device to see whether the issue follows the earbud or stays with the original device.
- If Apple reports that setup is incomplete, check that Bluetooth is on and, where applicable, confirm Settings > [your name] > Find My > Find My iPhone and Find My network are enabled. Follow any prompts for two-factor authentication or iCloud Keychain.
- If setup remains incomplete, open Find My > Devices, select the AirPods, choose Remove or Remove This Device, and pair them again.
Apple documents incomplete setup as a possible cause of pairing failure or only one AirPod pairing. Find My setup is separate from basic Bluetooth audio: an AirPod may play sound while Apple Account or Find My setup remains unfinished. See Apple’s incomplete setup guidance. For a previously owned or borrowed pair, another person’s Apple Account or incomplete Find My setup may also need attention.

Let AirPods firmware update automatically
- Update the connected iPhone, iPad, or Mac, turn on Bluetooth, and connect that device to Wi-Fi.
- Connect the AirPods to the Apple device.
- For AirPods or AirPods Pro, put them in the case, connect the case to power, and close the lid. Keep the closed case within Bluetooth range for at least 30 minutes.
- For AirPods Max, connect them to power and keep them within Bluetooth range of the Apple device for at least 30 minutes.
- Reconnect and check the installed firmware version.
Apple delivers firmware automatically under these conditions; there is no ordinary user-facing “Update firmware now” button. To check the version and compare it with the correct model, use Apple’s live AirPods firmware page. Versions differ by model and change over time, so a version number should not be treated as universal.
Use a separate pairing path for AirPods Max
Remove AirPods Max from the Smart Case and hold the listening-mode button for about five seconds until the status light flashes white, then choose them in the device’s Bluetooth settings. Do not use earbud-case reset instructions. Apple also documents supported wired connections and a separate firmware procedure for Max; see its pairing guide and firmware guidance.
When to seek service
After charging, re-pairing, and resetting, test the AirPods with another compatible device. If they still fail consistently across devices, stop changing unrelated settings and contact Apple Support or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Service is also reasonable if the case does not respond after charging, the status light never behaves normally, one earbud repeatedly fails, or there is visible liquid or impact damage. Troubleshooting cannot confirm a component failure remotely.
Check warranty or AppleCare coverage before authorizing paid work. Apple says its one-year Limited Warranty covers manufacturing issues, not accidental damage or normal battery wear; consumer-law rights may offer additional protection depending on location. AppleCare terms and availability vary by plan and region. Apple’s repair page says a personalized estimate requires inspection, so no single repair price applies to every model or location. A replacement earbud or case may be an option when only one component has failed; compare its inspected cost with repair or full replacement before deciding. Avoid third-party “Bluetooth repair” or firmware utilities: Apple’s firmware process is automatic, and such tools are not established fixes for AirPods hardware or firmware.
