The ChatGPT message “Failed to get service status” can indicate an OpenAI outage, but it can also result from a browser extension, stale site data, VPN, proxy, DNS filter, network policy, or sign-in configuration. Check OpenAI’s Status page first, then use the tests below to identify whether the fault is global, browser-specific, network-specific, or related to authentication.
Try these five checks first
- Open status.openai.com and inspect the ChatGPT component.
- Reload ChatGPT, then hard-refresh with Ctrl + Shift + R on Windows/Linux or Cmd + Shift + R on macOS.
- Open ChatGPT in a private or incognito window.
- Temporarily disable VPNs, proxies, browser extensions, secure-DNS tools, and web filtering.
- Test another browser, device, or network, such as mobile data instead of Wi-Fi.
What “Failed to Get Service Status” means
The message means ChatGPT could not retrieve or display service-status information while the site or app was loading or during authentication. It does not, by itself, prove that your account is suspended, your subscription expired, your password is wrong, your internet is completely offline, or ChatGPT is permanently unavailable.
OpenAI documented this exact message during a ChatGPT incident on July 12, 2023, when the service was unavailable for most users and login was temporarily disabled. That history confirms an outage is one possible cause, not that every occurrence is an outage. See the incident report.
1. Check whether OpenAI is having an incident
Go to status.openai.com and check the ChatGPT component, not only the overall headline. Read the incident description and latest updates, then refresh the page if the error appeared suddenly.

- An active ChatGPT incident: wait for OpenAI’s updates and try again after service is restored. There may be nothing to repair on your device.
- No incident shown: continue with local browser and network tests.
- The Status page will not load: that is inconclusive. Test another network rather than assuming either an outage or a local fault.
Status figures are aggregate availability reports; an “operational” indicator does not guarantee that every account, region, model, plan, or feature is working for every user.
2. Reload ChatGPT correctly
Use a normal reload first. If the page remains blank, frozen, or stuck loading, perform a hard refresh:
- Windows/Linux: Ctrl + Shift + R
- macOS: Cmd + Shift + R

3. Use a private window to isolate browser conflicts
Open an incognito or private window and visit ChatGPT without changing your normal profile. Leave extensions disabled for this test, especially ad blockers, tracker and privacy blockers, script blockers, cookie managers, and security extensions.

If ChatGPT works privately, the normal browser profile is the likely source. Disable extensions one at a time, reload after each change, and identify the conflicting extension. Private browsing is a diagnostic test, not necessarily a permanent fix.

4. Temporarily remove VPN, proxy, and security interference
Turn off your VPN or proxy and retry ChatGPT. Also test without secure-DNS filtering, antivirus web inspection, or other content-security layers where you are authorized to change them. OpenAI recommends this approach for several connection, CAPTCHA, suspicious-activity, and loading problems.
A VPN can change your apparent IP address or region, and shared VPN addresses may trigger additional security checks. Do not buy a VPN as a “fix”; it can add another routing, reputation, or location variable. Relevant guidance is available at OpenAI’s troubleshooting page and CAPTCHA guidance.

5. Clear ChatGPT site data, cookies, and cache
Clear data for ChatGPT/OpenAI rather than wiping every browser password and saved login:
- Open ChatGPT in your browser.
- Select the site-information or lock icon beside the address bar.
- Open the cookies, site-data, or site-settings panel.
- Delete stored data for the ChatGPT/OpenAI site.
- Close and reopen the browser, then sign in again.
Menu names differ among Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, and mobile browsers. Clearing site data can sign you out and remove local preferences; make sure you know whether you normally use email/password, Google, Microsoft, or Apple sign-in. 6. Change the browser, device, or network
Use the results diagnostically rather than repeating random fixes:

7. Check login method, cookies, and JavaScript
If ChatGPT loads but authentication fails, use the same method used to create the account: email and password, Continue with Google, Continue with Microsoft, or Continue with Apple. Choosing a different method can open a different account or produce a wrong-authentication-method error. Apple’s Hide My Email can associate an account with an Apple private-relay address.
Allow cookies, including third-party cookies where required, and JavaScript for chatgpt.com, openai.com, and auth.openai.com. Cookie-consent overlays, tracker blockers, and script blockers can interrupt verification. These are login troubleshooting domains, not a claim that they form OpenAI’s complete network allowlist.
8. If the problem is limited to an app
- Fully close and reopen the ChatGPT app.
- Check OpenAI Status.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
- Disable VPN or network-filtering software temporarily.
- Update the app through your device’s official app store.
- Open ChatGPT in a browser to determine whether the problem is app-specific.
- Sign out and back in only after confirming your original authentication method.
App menus and versions change, so avoid relying on an old version number or a browser-only setting when diagnosing a mobile or desktop app.

After international travel, ChatGPT can be affected by unsupported-region detection or a connection whose apparent location does not match your normal access. Do not assume that a VPN provides legitimate access to an unsupported region; it may instead create a location mismatch or trigger security checks.
When to stop troubleshooting and contact Support
Escalate when the error remains after testing another browser, private browsing, another device, another network, disabled VPN/extensions, cleared site data, and the correct sign-in method. Contact OpenAI through the chat bubble at the bottom-right of help.openai.com.
Include useful diagnostics
- Exact error text and a screenshot, if available
- Date and time, including time zone
- Browser and version, operating system, device, and ChatGPT app version
- Home, mobile, school, or corporate network
- Whether other users are affected
- Your sign-in method and workspace or organization details, if relevant
- Tests already completed
For persistent interface problems, Support may request a HAR file, browser-console errors, timestamps, request IDs, or a conversation URL/ID. Follow OpenAI’s troubleshooting instructions and authentication FAQ. Never send passwords, one-time codes, API keys, private keys, or other authentication secrets.
What not to do
- Do not infer that the message means your account is banned.
- Do not repeatedly retry login for hours during a reported incident.
- Do not reinstall the app before checking Status and testing the network; reinstalling cannot repair an OpenAI outage or blocked corporate connection.
- Do not edit the hosts file or install untrusted “ChatGPT repair” utilities without a verified diagnosis.
- Do not promise yourself that clearing cache, changing passwords, or buying a VPN will solve this particular error.

No. The message has appeared during a documented OpenAI outage and can also result from browser, network, VPN, or authentication problems.
Why does ChatGPT work on my phone but not my computer?
The difference usually points to the computer’s browser profile, extensions, security software, or network. Test the computer in private browsing and over the same mobile connection.

Check OpenAI Status before changing account settings. If no incident is reported, isolate the cause with private browsing, a hard refresh, disabled VPNs and extensions, cleared site data, and another network or device. Persistent failures across environments belong with OpenAI Support, not a password reset or a newly purchased VPN.
