Air-Gapped Communication: How It Works and When It Helps

Air gaps reduce ordinary network exposure, but every data transfer creates a path to control. Understand removable-media workflows, gateways, one-way flow, and design trade-offs.

Air-gapped communication moves information between systems that lack an ordinary network connection through an explicit transfer process. That separation can reduce persistent network exposure, but it does not make exchange risk-free: removable media creates a temporary path, while a gateway or data diode creates a permanent one. The right design depends on what must move, in which direction, how often, and what harm a compromised system could cause.

How does air-gapped communication work?

An air gap is physical separation between systems or security domains intended to prevent ordinary network communication. It does not mean an organization can never exchange information between them; it means the exchange must use a deliberately managed path. DARPA describes air gaps as breaks between computing systems adopted to prevent leakage and compromise, while recognizing the need to combine information across security levels (DARPA’s GAPS program page).

There are two broad ways to bridge that separation: move data using a temporary, operator-mediated process, or establish a persistent technical connection with controls governing the flow. In either case, the transfer path becomes part of the security architecture. The key question is not simply whether systems are connected, but what information can cross, who can authorize it, and how the path is monitored and assured.

Temporary transfer using removable media

A removable drive can carry files from one domain to another without leaving a continuously connected route. But when the drive is attached to both systems in turn, it creates a temporary logical connection. Malware can travel with files or exploit the systems that handle them, and uncontrolled movement can undermine confidentiality or provenance.

Manage this as a transfer workflow, not as a claim that a particular USB flash drive is inherently safe. Define who may authorize a transfer, how media and content are inspected or filtered, how custody and origin are recorded, and how imported or released data is handled. Australian Cyber Security Centre guidance warns that removable-media processes without supplemental protections can leave gaps in content protection, audit, and provenance checking (Fundamentals of Cross Domain Solutions).

Permanent transfer using a gateway or cross-domain solution

A data diode, network gateway, or cross-domain solution creates a persistent connection between domains. A cross-domain solution is intended to enforce information-flow policy: it can provide controlled interfaces for authorized sources and destinations, preserve logical separation, and inspect or filter content. It is not a generic gateway that automatically retains the security benefits of an air gap. Its policy, interfaces, and assurance must fit the specific use case.

As the number of connected domains, allowed directions, interfaces, and data types grows, the system becomes harder to verify and its attack surface expands. Australian government guidance identifies data diodes, network gateways, and cross-domain solutions as examples of permanent connections between security domains (ACSC guidance).

One-way flow and its limits

A unidirectional control can constrain traffic to one direction, which may be appropriate when a receiving environment needs data but should not send it back through that path. It does not prevent a vulnerability in the destination system from being exploited, nor does it ensure attackers cannot find another route to export information. Treat one-way flow as one control within a broader design, not as a guarantee of security. The UK National Cyber Security Centre makes this distinction in its OT architecture guidance.

What are the benefits and trade-offs of an air gap?

Physical separation can reduce ordinary network exposure, avoid a persistent connection, and lower the high-side system’s persistent attack surface. Those benefits matter most when connectivity is not needed or when the consequences of a network compromise justify limiting routine exchange.

The trade-off is reduced utility and information sharing. Operators may face slower or more labor-intensive transfers, and a transfer process can introduce malware or move data without adequate authorization or audit. A permanent bridge can erode the benefit of separation. Neither disconnected operation nor connectivity is automatically the safer choice: assess the business need, the data, the threat, and the consequences of compromise.

This is especially important in operational technology (OT), where connectivity may support business functions, maintenance, and security controls. The NCSC notes that most modern OT systems no longer operate in air-gapped environments by default. Its guidance recommends evaluating bandwidth, latency, availability, exposure, redundancy, protocol security, and compromise impact rather than assuming disconnection is always practical or proportionate (NCSC, “Creating and maintaining a definitive view of your OT architecture”).

What does an air-gapped architecture look like?

At its simplest, it has separate systems or domains with no ordinary network route between them. If information must cross, the architecture adds a defined transfer mechanism: either a temporary process involving removable media or a permanent, policy-controlled connection. Draw the full information path, including people, devices, interfaces, and any alternate routes—not just the network diagram.

For OT, begin by documenting the operational need and the assets involved. For each asset, establish what it must communicate with, which protocols and security controls it uses, what architectural controls exist, what environmental constraints apply, and whether compromise could bypass existing controls. Record and review the business case for every external connection. The NCSC’s OT guidance provides this practical basis for maintaining a definitive architecture view.

Protect exchanged information before, during, and after transfer, with safeguards commensurate with risk. NIST SP 800-47 Rev. 1 addresses exchange governance and risk management as a general principle; it does not prescribe a particular air-gap technology (NIST SP 800-47 Rev. 1).

How should you choose a data-transfer approach?

Compare the options against the actual transfer requirement instead of treating “air-gapped” as a complete design specification.

Decision Questions to answer Design implication
Persistence Is an operator-mediated transfer sufficient, or is continuous exchange required? A temporary process avoids a continuously connected route but requires secure handling and may be slower. A permanent connection must be justified and controlled.
Direction Does information need to move one way, or are justified flows needed in both directions? Constrain direction where practical, while accounting for destination-system risk and alternate export paths.
Data and policy Which data types are permitted? Who approves release, import, and access? What filtering and provenance checks are needed? Define and enforce the rules for the specific domains and content, rather than relying on the transfer medium alone.
Assurance and attack surface How will the mechanism be tested for its use case? How many domains, interfaces, and flows does it introduce? More interfaces, data types, and directions increase design and verification complexity.
Operations What bandwidth, latency, availability, maintenance, and recovery are required? Balance security controls against the operational consequences of delay, outage, or failed transfer.
Monitoring and governance Are connections, protocols, ports, owners, business justifications, and change reviews documented? Maintain current data-flow diagrams and review each external connection as systems and needs change.

What residual risks remain?

Physical separation cannot eliminate every conceivable communication channel. A 2021 paper, LaserShark: Establishing Fast, Bidirectional Communication into Air-Gapped Systems, demonstrated a covert optical channel using lasers directed at built-in LEDs on certain devices. That was a specific laboratory technique, not an ordinary product capability or a general measure of air-gap security (the 2021 LaserShark paper).

The practical lesson is to base controls on a threat model: harden devices, restrict physical access, monitor transfer processes, and consider whether unusual alternate channels matter in the environment. Do not mistake an unusual laboratory demonstration for evidence that all isolated systems are routinely vulnerable in the same way.
