Air Cooler vs. Air Conditioner: Which Is Right for Your Home?

Evaporative coolers suit dry climates and need air exchange; air conditioners are better when humidity removal or targeted room cooling matters.

Choose an evaporative air cooler if you live in a dry climate, can keep air moving through your home, and are comfortable with added indoor moisture. Choose an air conditioner if it is humid, you need moisture removed, or you want to cool a particular room. The familiar term “air cooler” usually means an evaporative cooler—sometimes called a swamp cooler—which works differently from an air conditioner.

How an evaporative cooler differs from an air conditioner

Evaporative coolers use water and airflow

An evaporative cooler draws air through water-saturated pads. As water evaporates, it removes heat from the air. A direct evaporative cooler also adds moisture to the air it supplies, so it is most effective in dry conditions. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) describes evaporative coolers as a potential alternative to compressor-based air conditioning when a home is in a dry climate (DOE’s evaporative-cooler guide).

This system needs a way for air to leave the home as fresh, cooled air enters. In the direct-cooling setup described in DOE’s Building America HVAC guide, a window or vent must be open. Without an exit path, air exchange is restricted and the cooler cannot operate as intended.

Air conditioners cool and remove moisture

An air conditioner removes heat and humidity from indoor air. That makes it more useful when outdoor air is humid or when you want to reduce indoor moisture. DOE notes that ventilation is not an effective cooling strategy in hot, humid climates (DOE’s home-cooling guidance). ENERGY STAR also explains that an oversized room air conditioner may cool a room before it removes enough moisture, leaving the room cool but clammy (ENERGY STAR room air conditioner guidance).

Compare the options against your home and climate

What matters Evaporative air cooler Air conditioner
Outdoor humidity Best suited to dry conditions, where evaporation can cool the incoming air. More suitable when hot, humid weather makes ventilation ineffective.
Indoor humidity Adds moisture in a direct-cooling design; not a dehumidifier. Removes humidity as well as heat.
Airflow and installation Needs air to leave the home; a window or vent may need to stay open for the described direct-cooling setup. A room unit must be installed and sealed correctly at its window opening.
Cooling area Can supply cooled air where its airflow reaches, but the home needs a route for air exchange. A room air conditioner can target a selected room; capacity should match that space.
Maintenance Requires regular cleaning and draining; pad compatibility and service intervals depend on the model. Requirements vary by model; the sources cited here do not establish a universal service schedule.

What the published energy and cost comparisons mean

DOE’s circa-2011 Building America guide gives a broad estimate that evaporative coolers can use about one-quarter as much energy as central air conditioners and cost about half as much to install. DOE’s HomeCooling101 infographic, published around 2017, repeats the approximate comparison (DOE HomeCooling101 infographic). These category-level estimates are not current quotes, a forecast of an individual household’s bill, or a direct comparison between every portable cooler and every air conditioner. Actual costs depend on the system, home, installation, local energy rates, and climate.

For a different kind of comparison, DOE’s Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) estimates annual energy costs of $67 for its ENERGY STAR room-AC example and $91 for its less-efficient example. Under that example’s stated assumptions and 2023 dollars, the estimated nine-year lifetime energy costs are $480 and $648, respectively (DOE FEMP room-air-conditioner guidance). These are scenario estimates for the specified products and assumptions, not expected bills for every home.

How to choose and install a room air conditioner

Match capacity to the room

Use the room’s square footage to select an appropriately sized room air conditioner, following the manufacturer’s sizing guidance. A unit that is too large can cool the air quickly but run in short cycles, reducing moisture removal and comfort. DOE FEMP also notes that oversizing can raise purchase cost and energy use.

Seal the window installation

Correct sizing does not make up for a poor installation. ENERGY STAR warns that an improperly installed room unit can leak as much air as a six-square-inch hole, which can increase energy costs and reduce comfort. Follow the unit’s installation instructions and seal gaps around the window opening.

Check efficiency and local incentives

Compare products using the applicable efficiency criteria, such as ENERGY STAR certification, rather than relying on a category-wide energy estimate. DOE FEMP notes that utility incentives may be available; check with your local utility or program because eligibility and availability vary.

Plan for evaporative-cooler maintenance

DOE advises keeping the water reservoir clean; its HomeCooling101 guidance also recommends regularly cleaning and draining the cooler. The exact schedule and replacement-pad type depend on the make and model, so consult the manufacturer’s manual and use compatible parts. There is no universal interval or pad specification established by the cited guidance.

Make the decision

  • Consider an evaporative cooler if your climate is dry, added moisture is acceptable, and your home layout lets air leave as cooled air enters.
  • Choose an air conditioner if the weather is humid, humidity removal matters, or you need controlled cooling in a particular room.
  • For a room AC, size it to the space and install it with a good seal; capacity and installation are separate factors in comfort and efficiency.
