AI writing detectors can flag text for closer review, but no score can reliably prove who wrote it. Results depend on the writing sample, language, length, genre, detector and generator versions, and threshold—and editing or translation can change them. The fairest comparison is not a universal ranking: it is a look at each tool’s false positives, missed AI text, and the conditions under which it was evaluated.
Why AI detector accuracy is conditional
A detector classifies patterns in text; it does not observe who typed the words or how they were produced. Its result applies to a particular test setup, not automatically to every essay, article, language, or current version of the product.

To interpret a performance claim, you need to know what texts were tested, how long they were, which languages and genres they represented, whether AI text was edited or paraphrased, which detector and generator versions were used, and what score threshold counted as a flag. A change in any of these conditions can change the result.

“Accuracy” can also conceal different kinds of mistakes. A false positive is human-written text incorrectly flagged as AI; a false negative is AI-generated text the detector misses. Those errors have different consequences, so a single accuracy percentage is not enough to assess a tool for a high-stakes decision.

What published comparisons have found
The results below come from evaluations with different samples and methods. They are evidence about those tests, not a head-to-head ranking of current products.
| Evaluation | Reported result | What it can—and cannot—tell you |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI’s experimental classifier, 2023 | On its English challenge set, it identified 26% of AI-written text as “likely AI-written” and falsely labeled 9% of human text as AI-written. OpenAI discontinued the classifier on July 20, 2023, citing low accuracy. | This is a result for a retired classifier and its test set, not for current detectors. OpenAI identified short inputs under 1,000 characters, non-English text, code, predictable text, and edited AI text as limitations. |
| Peer-reviewed evaluation in the International Journal for Educational Integrity, 2023 | The study tested 12 publicly available systems and two commercial tools, Turnitin and PlagiarismCheck. It reported 96% overall accuracy on human-written documents in one condition, a 20-percentage-point drop for human writing translated into English by machine, 74% for unmodified AI-generated categories, 42% for manually edited AI text, and 26% for machine-paraphrased AI text. Six of 14 systems produced false positives; 13 produced false negatives on at least some unmodified AI categories. | The study shows that text treatment and document type can matter substantially. Its results describe the tools and generators tested in 2023, not the performance of every current release. |
| Acta Neurochirurgica study, 2025 | GPTZero, ZeroGPT, and Corrector were tested on 1,000 items: 250 human-authored texts and 750 ChatGPT-generated texts associated with academic articles from four neurosurgery journals. Reported AUC values ranged from 0.75 to 1.00; the authors concluded that no detector achieved 100% reliability. | This is a controlled academic-text sample in one subject area. AUC describes how well a system separates classes across thresholds; it is not the same as accuracy at one threshold or a guarantee about other genres. |
| GPTZero’s vendor-published benchmark page | For a named benchmark against OpenAI o1, GPTZero reports 98.6% accuracy, 97.2% recall, and a 0.0% false-positive rate. The page also includes an older 2023 GPTZero-versus-Turnitin benchmark and says those are its last available Turnitin benchmarks. | These are claims by the vendor about selected test setups, not independent validation for all writing. The page compares services including Copyleaks, Originality, Pangram, and Turnitin, but changing versions and selected datasets limit broad comparisons. |
| NBER working paper by Brian Jabarian and Alex Imas, 2025 | The paper evaluates Pangram, Originality.ai, GPTZero, and RoBERTa across genres, lengths, and models. Its search-result abstract says Pangram was the only tested service to meet a strict false-positive-rate cap of 0.005 without sacrificing accuracy. | That statement is bounded by the paper’s corpus and policy setting. The abstract alone does not establish a universal winner; detailed rankings require the full methods and results. |
| ACL study by Russell, Karpinska, and Iyyer, 2025 | In a task involving 300 nonfiction English articles generated by GPT-4o, Claude, or o1, or written by people, the majority vote of five frequent users of LLM writing tools misclassified one article. The task included paraphrased and humanized examples. | This suggests informed human readers can be a useful complementary signal in that curated task. It does not show that unaided intuition is reliable for every teacher, editor, or setting. |
How to compare detector claims

Separate false positives from false negatives
- False-positive rate (FPR): the share of genuinely human texts that the system flags as AI. This is especially important when a mistaken accusation could harm someone.
- False-negative rate (FNR) or recall: how often AI-generated texts are missed, or the share of AI texts identified, respectively. These measures address different aspects of missed detection.
- Precision: among texts flagged by the detector, the share that really are AI-generated. Precision depends partly on how common AI-generated text is in the population being screened, so a benchmark with an artificially balanced mix cannot by itself establish precision in a classroom or newsroom.
Check whether the test matches your text
- Compare language, genre, subject, and text length.
- Look for whether the AI samples were generated in full, edited by a person, machine-paraphrased, or translated.
- Check the generator and detector versions, evaluation date, and threshold used to turn a score into a positive result.
- Prefer studies that disclose their sample and method. Note whether the evaluator is independent or the product vendor, and whether access restrictions affect reproducibility.
OpenAI’s retired-classifier announcement called its classifier not fully reliable and said it should not be used as a primary decision-making tool. GPTZero’s benchmark page similarly argues that a 100% accuracy claim may indicate a flawed dataset or method; that is the vendor’s stated position, not an independent validation. The broader practical point is to inspect the evaluation conditions rather than treating a headline claim as universal.

Can detectors identify ChatGPT writing?
They can sometimes distinguish AI-generated samples from human writing in a specified test, but that does not mean a detector can identify ChatGPT authorship reliably in every real-world text. Performance varies with the generator, detector version, length, topic, language, and degree of editing. A classification score is not a record of a text’s creation process.

Detector rankings also age. GPTZero reports frequent model releases and argues that benchmarks should identify versions and evaluation dates. That is a vendor’s methodological view, but version changes are a real reason to treat historical test results as time-bound rather than as permanent product ratings.
When detector results are useful—and when they are not
Reasonable uses
- Use a flag as a prompt for a closer human review, not as a finding about authorship.
- For research into aggregate patterns, use a validated, disclosed protocol suited to the language and material being analyzed.
- Consider the score alongside relevant context, such as drafts, revision history, an assignment-specific discussion, and the applicable institutional policy.
- Tell people that detector output is probabilistic and can be wrong.
High-risk uses
- Do not treat a percentage or label as proof of misconduct or authorship.
- Do not apply one threshold indiscriminately across languages, genres, or text types.
- Do not make an adverse grade, employment, publication, or misconduct decision from a detector result alone.
- Do not present a vendor’s benchmark as independent evidence that the tool will perform the same way in your setting.
A practical review process after a flag
- Record the scope. Note the tool and version, date, threshold, text length, language, genre, and any known AI editing or translation. If those details are unavailable, record that limitation.
- Check the error that matters. Ask whether the evaluation reports false positives on comparable human writing, as well as missed AI writing. Do not substitute a general accuracy figure for either measure.
- Seek independent context. Review available drafts or revision history and discuss the work with its author under the relevant policy. Treat inconsistencies as questions to investigate, not as automatic proof.
- Make the decision using the established process. Apply the institution’s or publication’s rules and evidence standards, not the detector score by itself.
Is there a best AI writing detector?
The cited evaluations do not establish one current, independently verified winner for all readers and writing tasks. The 2023 cross-tool study, 2025 academic-text study, vendor benchmarks, and NBER working paper use different samples, versions, thresholds, and error measures. Choose only after identifying the false-positive tolerance and text types relevant to your use, then look for evidence tested under those conditions. A tool that performs well in one benchmark may not be the best choice for a different language, genre, or decision.
