Choose a visual, bundled website workflow if you want to edit pages by dragging and dropping; choose a prompt-led app workflow if direct code access and an Expo mobile-app route matter more. The products take different approaches, so the better fit depends on what you are building, how you want to work, and the full cost—not on a proven difference in output quality.
How the two builders work
Visual editing and prompting in one builder
One platform now combines its former website builder and Horizons in AI Builder, with two modes. Manual mode is for visual drag-and-drop editing; Agentic mode uses prompts to build and refine projects. Its stated project range includes small-business websites, stores, web apps, portals, CRMs, and tools. The provider says plans include hosting and a built-in backend, and describes Stripe payments and integrations. Manual editing does not use AI credits, while Agentic building and live AI features do. The provider also says code can be exported for self-hosting elsewhere.

Prompt-led building with code access
Bolt is a browser-based builder for websites, web apps, and mobile apps. Its documented features include code view, GitHub, Stripe, Google SSO, and MCP connections. Bolt Cloud combines databases, hosting, and domains within a project. Projects have a free bolt.host subdomain; paid users can connect custom domains. Bolt says users own code created with the service and may use it for legal purposes, including commercial projects.

Which one fits your project?
Small-business sites, portfolios, blogs, and stores
Favor the visual workflow if your main job is publishing conventional pages and you would rather edit them directly than rely on prompts. Bundled hosting and business features can simplify setup, but confirm the specific plan includes what you need and account for renewal pricing.
Web apps and prototypes
Either may suit an interactive web project, but the workflow differs. The visual-and-prompt option describes an included backend and code export; Bolt emphasizes prompt-led building, direct code access, integrations, databases, and an in-product hosting flow. For Bolt, estimate token use using a project similar in size and complexity to yours: larger project files use more tokens per message.
Mobile apps
Bolt documents a mobile-app workflow through Expo. The other builder describes responsive web apps, not native apps for the App Store or Google Play at present. These are different publishing routes, not equivalent mobile-app offerings; check whether an Expo-based project meets your platform and distribution requirements.
Pricing: compare the commitment, not just the monthly figure
The following are examples from the providers’ pricing pages, not like-for-like quotes. The first provider’s figures are localized to the UK, shown in GBP before VAT, and tied to 48-month terms. Bolt’s listed paid prices are monthly. Prices and allowances can change, so check the live page for your country before deciding.

| AI Builder Premium | £2.99 per month on a 48-month term; £143.52 total | UK page, before VAT; renews at £10.99 per month. |
| AI Builder Unlimited | £3.99 per month on a 48-month term; £191.52 total | UK page, before VAT; renews at £13.99 per month. The page lists ecommerce and email-marketing features on this plan. |
| Bolt Free | $0; 300,000 tokens per day and 1 million tokens per month | Both daily and monthly limits apply. |
| Bolt Pro | $25 per month, billed monthly | Includes custom-domain support. |
| Bolt Teams | $30 per member per month | Price is per member. |
These figures do not establish the total cost for every use case. Compare the full prepaid commitment and renewal rate against Bolt’s monthly billing, then check whether your country’s currency, taxes, and feature availability change the calculation. Bolt says larger project files consume more tokens per message; paid tokens roll over for one additional month, and an active subscription is required to access rolled-over tokens.

Hosting, backend, and payments
Both providers describe hosting and backend capabilities, but the details and project workflows differ. AI Builder says its plans include hosting and a built-in backend, and its product page describes Stripe payments and integrations. Bolt Cloud groups databases, hosting, and domains in a project, and Bolt lists Stripe among its integrations. Verify the specific payment, database, domain, and hosting capabilities you need before building around them; broad product descriptions do not establish identical features or limits.
Code access, portability, and ownership
For the first builder, the provider says users can export code and self-host elsewhere. Bolt provides code view and says users own generated code for legal uses, including commercial projects. These are useful but distinct claims: code export and self-hosting describe an exit route, while ownership describes permitted use. If portability matters, check what the export contains and whether your project’s dependencies and backend can move with it.

Usage limits and collaboration
AI Builder separates manual editing, which does not consume AI credits, from Agentic work and live AI features, which do. Bolt meters activity with tokens; its free plan has both daily and monthly limits, and larger project files use more tokens per message. Your iteration habits and project size therefore affect how useful each allowance is. Bolt lists a Teams plan, but the available details here do not establish its collaboration features; compare the current plan descriptions if several people need to work on a project.
A practical decision checklist
- Choose visual editing when page layout and hands-on drag-and-drop changes are central to the work.
- Favor prompt-led building when you want to iterate through instructions and inspect or edit code directly.
- For a store or business site, verify the exact plan’s ecommerce, email, hosting, and domain terms.
- For an app, identify whether you need a web app, a responsive web experience, or an Expo mobile workflow before choosing.
- Estimate usage against the project’s likely complexity and iteration frequency, not just the headline allowance.
- Compare full upfront cost, renewal price, billing cadence, and localized taxes in your market.
- If you may move the project, confirm export contents, backend dependencies, and the practical self-hosting path.
What the available evidence cannot settle
The providers’ documentation supports a comparison of stated features, workflows, pricing, and publishing routes. It does not establish which builder produces better results, is easier to use, or is more reliable: no direct comparative performance, reliability, or usability test is available here.
