To remove text from video with AI, cover the text with a mask and use video inpainting to reconstruct the hidden pixels across frames. Next.js can handle the web interface and connect it to a processing service, but it does not perform the inpainting itself. The title alone does not establish which model, masking method, or deployment this particular project uses, so the workflow below separates documented capabilities from design choices.
How does an AI video text remover work?
Video inpainting fills masked or missing regions while trying to keep the result visually consistent both within each frame and over time. For text removal, the mask marks the letters and, where needed, a small surrounding margin. The model then estimates what belongs in those covered areas from visible image context and information in nearby or corresponding frames.

That temporal dimension matters: independently filling every frame can make a background flicker or change as the video plays. ProPainter is one documented temporal video-inpainting method. Its paper describes filling gaps while maintaining spatial and temporal coherence, and its method uses propagation across frames alongside a mask-guided sparse video Transformer. Read the ProPainter paper for the method and its evaluation.

If text covers a face, a sign, or another detail that is never visible in any frame, a model must infer what might be there. The output can look plausible without matching the true hidden scene.

How can I remove hard-coded subtitles from a video?
Hard-coded subtitles are part of the image, unlike a separate subtitle track that can be switched off or edited. A video text-removal workflow therefore needs a mask for the subtitle pixels and a video inpainting step. The mask is a distinct input: the ProPainter project README describes supplying a video (or extracted frames) and frame-wise mask(s); it does not mean the model automatically detects or tracks subtitles.
1. Check whether the text is a separate track
If the source has selectable subtitles, disable or remove that track instead of altering the picture. If the letters remain visible when subtitles are turned off, they are likely part of the video image and need masking and reconstruction.
2. Create a mask that covers the text over time
A fixed-position overlay may be covered by a shared rectangular region, provided the background and text stay in the same place. Moving captions, animated titles, camera movement, or changing text require masks that follow the affected pixels frame by frame. A mask that misses letter edges can leave halos; one that covers too much asks the model to invent more of the scene.

Text detection or segmentation can help generate a starting mask, but it is a separate component that must be selected and integrated. The community SAM2 + ProPainter example pipeline is an example of combining segmentation and inpainting; it is not evidence that every app has automatic text tracking built in.
3. Inpaint, inspect, and export
Run the source frames and corresponding masks through a temporal inpainting method, encode the processed frames into a video, then inspect the result at normal playback speed and frame by frame around the text. Look for flicker, smearing, leftover edges, and changes to nearby objects before sharing or downloading the output.
Can I build a video text remover with Next.js?
Yes. Next.js can provide the browser-facing app, upload and preview flow, and a server-side integration point. It is the application framework around the video-processing workflow, not the video-inpainting model. The Next.js 15 video guide covers video upload and display approaches.

Browser interface
Let a user choose a video, define or refine the text region, see processing status, and preview or download the finished clip. For a prototype, clear progress states are particularly useful: upload, mask preparation, processing, and output encoding can take different amounts of time.
Input and job handling
Validate the uploaded file and its size, store it in a suitable media store, and create a job for processing. Avoid treating large video files as ordinary application source assets. A job-oriented design also makes it possible to report status and recover from a failed processing step without requiring the browser to remain open for the entire inference run.
Inference and output
Pass the source video or frames and frame-wise masks to the inpainting process. After inference, encode and store the result, then expose it through a player or download flow. These are architectural recommendations, not claims about the exact UI, storage provider, or code used by the project named in the title.

Local inference and hosted inference are different deployment choices. A Vercel Next.js template for Stable Diffusion image inpainting demonstrates a server-side API integration pattern for image processing; it does not establish that the template supports video or that a compatible hosted video model is available.
What affects output quality?
Mask accuracy
The model can only reconstruct the region it is asked to fill. Masks that are too tight can leave text remnants; masks that are too broad erase more genuine image detail and make reconstruction harder. A mask that drifts from moving text can produce visibly inconsistent patches.

Motion and occlusion
Temporal methods use information across frames, but correspondence can break down when objects move quickly, appear or disappear, or pass behind the text. ProPainter’s paper identifies inaccurate optical flow and limited temporal range as sources of spatial misalignment, blur, or missing texture. Inspect difficult transitions rather than judging a result from one still frame.

What published results do—and do not—show
In its own experimental comparison, the ProPainter paper reports that its flow-completion network was over 40 times faster than a cited prior method, with approximately 192 frames per second tested on one NVIDIA Tesla V100 GPU with 32 GB of memory. Those figures describe that network and test setup, not end-to-end speed for a Next.js application or a guarantee for other hardware.
The paper also reports a 1.46 dB PSNR advantage over prior work in its described evaluation and a separate 1.14 dB advantage on DAVIS. These are paper-reported comparisons in their respective evaluation contexts, not universal quality gains or measurements of this app.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does running video inpainting locally require?
Local processing gives the operator control over where video is handled, but its compute needs depend on resolution, frame-window settings, precision, and other parameters. ProPainter’s README lists controls including width and height, half precision, resize ratio, neighbor length, reference stride, and subvideo length. The repository gives the following memory estimates for its documented setup; they are estimates, not hardware guarantees:
| Resolution | 50 frames, fp32 | 50 frames, fp16 | 80 frames, fp32 | 80 frames, fp16 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1280 × 720 | 28 GB | 19 GB | OOM | 25 GB |
| 320 × 240 | 3 GB | 2 GB | 4 GB | 3 GB |
“OOM” is the repository’s indication that the documented 80-frame, 1280 × 720 fp32 setup runs out of memory. Actual needs can differ with model settings and hardware. Lowering resolution or using half precision can reduce the listed workload, with trade-offs in image detail or numerical precision.
How should I choose between local and hosted processing?
There is no universally best deployment. Decide based on the actual clip length and resolution, privacy requirements, expected workload, and the operational effort you can support. The available sources do not establish current hosted-service prices, limits, or a verified video-specific model endpoint, so confirm those details for the service and workload you intend to use.
- Local GPU processing: useful when you want control over the processing environment and can manage the hardware and model setup. Memory demand rises with workload and settings.
- Hosted inference: can avoid maintaining a local GPU, but requires a compatible video-processing service and careful review of its cost, limits, latency, and data handling.
- Either approach: plan storage and delivery for the source and encoded output, and measure processing time on representative videos rather than inferring it from a model paper’s benchmark.
What can be claimed about this particular project?
The title identifies a Next.js video text-removal project, but does not document its exact model, mask-generation method, interface, storage, job queue, supported formats, deployment, measured processing time, output quality, or privacy behavior. ProPainter is a relevant documented approach, not a confirmed component of this project. A credible project demonstration should show representative before-and-after frames or clips and identify the inputs and conditions; without inspected outputs, no quality result should be attributed to it.
