AI video generation is most useful as part of a repeatable production workflow—not as a one-prompt shortcut to a finished video. Plan the deliverable, choose text or image references, generate and compare options, edit the selected material, then check rights and availability before publishing. Runway documents node-based workflows for chaining and revisiting generations, while Adobe’s April 2026 announcement describes editing features built into Firefly Video Editor. These are vendor-described capabilities, not independent proof of output quality or time savings.
What makes AI video a workflow rather than a prompt?
A prompt starts a generation; a workflow covers the decisions around it: what the clip must do, what inputs should guide it, how alternatives are reviewed, what editing remains, and how the final asset is saved. That distinction matters because the first generated result may need another attempt or post-production before it fits a project.

Runway’s Workflows are one documented example of a connected process: nodes can chain generations, branch into variations, and retain output history for comparison and reuse. Adobe’s April 2026 announcement describes Firefly Video Editor as a multi-track editor with audio enhancements, color adjustments, licensed stock access, and partner models. These examples show how generation and editing can sit within a broader process; they do not establish that every service offers the same controls or that any output is publication-ready without review.

Start with the intended deliverable, not a platform’s feature list. Write down the constraints that will determine whether a result is usable:

- Legend perfected: Modern design with a matte basalt black finish in an optimized chassis with customizable AlienFX lighting zones, including the striking stadium lighting.
- Game changing graphics: Step into the future of gaming and creation with the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 graphics, powered by NVIDIA Blackwell architecture.
- Marathon gaming unlocked: This high-performance technology ensures clean energy is consistently available, unleashing the top-level power of Intel Core Ultra 7 265F processor as you game, livestream, and multi-task for hours on end.

- Dell Services: 1 Year Onsite Service provides support when and where you need it. Dell will come to your home, office, or location of choice, if an issue covered by Limited Hardware Warranty cannot be resolved remotely.
- Destination and audience: where the video will appear and whom it is for.
- Format and duration: the target aspect ratio and approximate length.
- Role in the project: whether the generation is a short insert, a standalone short, or a product advertisement.
- Audio and voice: whether the clip needs dialogue, narration, music, sound effects, or no audio.
- Brand and rights requirements: any visual identity, source-media permissions, likeness considerations, or platform rules that need review.
These are planning prompts, not universal settings required by a particular tool. Defining them first gives you a practical way to judge whether a generated option serves the project.
Should you use text-to-video or image-to-video?
Choose based on what needs to anchor the shot. Runway’s getting-started guide distinguishes the two approaches: a text-to-video prompt should describe the visual scene and its motion, while an image-to-video prompt can focus on desired movement because the reference image already establishes much of the visual content.
- Text-to-video: use descriptive text when the scene itself needs to be established through the prompt.
- Image-to-video: use a reference image when you want it to anchor visual content, and describe the movement you want to see.
A reference can give the generation a visual starting point, but it does not by itself guarantee consistency across multiple shots. Review the output against the brief rather than assuming the input will control every detail.

How can you make generation repeatable?
For a one-off exploration, a simple generation interface may be enough. A connected, node-based pipeline is more useful when steps recur, when you want to test branches, or when you need to return to an earlier result. Runway’s first-workflow tutorial demonstrates a sequence that connects text to an image-generation node, then combines the generated image with a second prompt for image-to-video. The tutorial says users can run the whole workflow or individual nodes and review, compare, restore, favorite, and download earlier outputs.
- Set up the inputs. Use the prompt and, where helpful, a reference image that matches the planned shot.
- Connect the stages. In Runway’s tutorial example, text feeds an image-generation node; that image and a second prompt feed image-to-video.
- Run a stage or the full chain. Running individual nodes can help isolate a change; running the complete workflow carries the linked steps through.
- Branch when testing alternatives. Try a different prompt or model in a separate branch rather than losing the earlier option.
- Compare and preserve useful outputs. Review the execution history and restore a previous result if a later attempt is less suitable.
This is an example of a repeatable pipeline, not a required recipe or the only way to produce a video. The benefit is process control: you can see and revisit choices instead of treating each generation as an isolated attempt.
How should you iterate without losing good options?
Change inputs deliberately and compare the new result with earlier versions. If a generation is close but misses the intended movement, adjust the motion description; if the scene itself is wrong, reconsider the scene prompt or reference. When a tool offers execution history, branches, or restoration, use those features to keep promising alternatives available while you test a change.

Runway documents branches for trying different models or prompts and node execution history for restoring earlier outputs. Those controls help organize iteration, but they do not guarantee that a revision will improve the result. Keep the decision tied to the original brief, and do not assume that the newest version is the best one.

What remains after a clip is generated?
Generation is not the same as finishing. Review the selected material, decide whether it needs sound or color work, and assemble it with any other footage or assets required by the project.
- Sound: Adobe describes audio cleanup and balance features in its April 2026 Firefly Video Editor announcement. Runway describes media utility nodes for adding or extracting audio.
- Color and assembly: Adobe describes color adjustments; Runway describes a utility for stitching video.
- Additional assets: Adobe says creators can access over 800 million licensed assets—including video, images, audio, and sound effects—directly in Firefly Video Editor. This figure comes from Adobe’s April 2026 product announcement; it is not an independent audit of the catalog.
- Saving outputs: Runway’s workflow tutorial says past outputs can be downloaded for local storage. Keep files organized so the chosen version can be identified later.
Which finishing steps are available depends on the service and the project. A built-in editing feature may make a step more convenient, but it does not remove the need to check whether the finished video meets the intended use.

What should you check before publishing?
Review the provider’s current terms, the permissions for any uploaded source media, and the rules that apply to likenesses and the platform where you plan to publish. Do not treat one provider’s statement as a general answer about AI-generated content.
Runway says, “Yes, the content you create using Runway is yours to use without any non-commercial restrictions from us.” That is Runway’s statement about its own terms; it does not settle rights in source material or answer for other services. Check the applicable terms directly before relying on a use permission.
Availability can change as well. OpenAI’s Sora safety page states that the product became unavailable on April 26, 2026, so it should not be treated as a currently usable consumer tool on that basis. The same page describes visible and invisible provenance signals and embedded C2PA metadata for Sora videos; that is background on Sora’s prior approach, not a current workflow recommendation.

How do you choose a workflow that fits?
There is no universal winner established by these vendor feature descriptions. Compare the options against the work you need to do, and distinguish product claims from independently measured performance.
| Workflow question | What to check |
|---|---|
| What can anchor a shot? | Whether the service supports text prompts, reference images, or both. |
| Can you repeat and control a sequence? | Whether steps can be linked into a reusable process. |
| Can you preserve alternatives? | Whether you can branch, compare generations, and restore earlier results. |
| What editing is built in? | Whether the workflow supports relevant tasks such as sound, color, stitching, or adding assets. |
| How are project files handled? | Whether outputs can be downloaded and organized for local use. |
| What terms apply? | The provider’s current terms, source-media permissions, provenance practices, and applicable platform rules. |
| Is the service available? | Current product and model availability at the time you intend to use it. |
