Before signing with an AI vendor, map what data the service receives and where it goes, verify the vendor’s actual practices with evidence, assess AI and supply-chain risks for your use case, and turn critical answers into contract commitments. Keep the review proportionate to the data and consequences involved; a vendor’s assurances alone are not verification.
Start with the use case and its risks
Write down what the service will do, who will use it, whose data it may process, and which decisions or outputs could be affected. Include the likely consequences if the service fails, produces an unsuitable result, or exposes information. These details determine what evidence you need and which risks deserve the most attention.

The NIST AI Risk Management Framework is a voluntary framework for managing AI risks across design, development, deployment, use, and evaluation. It addresses characteristics including validity and reliability, safety, security and resilience, accountability and transparency, explainability and interpretability, privacy enhancement, and fairness with harmful bias managed. Use it to organize questions, not as a certification or proof that a vendor is safe. NIST’s framework page said it was being revised when checked on October 7, 2026. Ask the vendor to explain the data path for the specific service, product tier, and configuration you plan to buy. A general privacy statement may not describe optional features or the actual settings in your deployment.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Inputs and outputs: What information do users submit? What information does the service infer or generate from it?
- Purpose and processing: Why is each data category needed, and which features process it? Does it enter model training, fine-tuning, evaluation, human review, abuse monitoring, or product improvement? Ask what each answer means for your chosen tier and configuration.
- People and organizations with access: Which vendor teams, subprocessors, cloud providers, model providers, or other third parties can access the data? Ask for an inventory relevant to your service.
- Location and lifecycle: Where is data stored and processed? How long is it kept, including in logs and backups? What deletion method and timeline apply when you request deletion or end the service?
- Customer controls: Can you restrict fields, disable optional processing, or store only the necessary fields in a separate data store?
The FTC’s vendor-security guidance advises buyers to limit vendor access to needed data and define how vendors may use, share or sell, retain, and delete it. NIST’s Generative AI Profile also recommends inventorying third parties with access to organizational content. FTC vendor security guidance; NIST Generative AI Profile.
Verify security claims with service-specific evidence
Request evidence that matches the service boundary, geography, data flow, and contract you are evaluating. Record the scope and date of each item; a report covering a different service or an earlier period may not answer your question.

Compare what the evidence establishes with what the vendor has promised. No single certificate, audit report, or questionnaire settles the entire review. The FTC recommends putting vendor security requirements in writing, checking that the vendor follows them, and considering an independent third-party assessment; it cautions against relying on compliance claims without verification. NIST’s supplier due-diligence guide also includes resilience and foundational cybersecurity practices. FTC vendor security guidance; NIST SP 1326.
Assess AI-specific and supplier risks
For generative AI, include intellectual property, data privacy, security, embedded technologies, ongoing monitoring, and incident or vulnerability information in procurement due diligence. NIST’s Generative AI Profile recommends contract clauses that permit evaluation of third-party GAI processes and standards, as well as approved-provider inventories and contingency planning for high-risk third-party failures. Ask which model and service components are involved, what information the vendor can disclose about training, evaluation, and monitoring for your use case, and how it will notify you of material changes. Find out which third parties can affect data handling or model behavior, and what fallback or exit path is available if the vendor or an upstream provider fails.
Consider supplier risk beyond the AI model itself. NIST SP 1326, published July 8, 2026, structures ICT supplier due diligence around foreign ownership, control or influence; provenance; resilience; foundational cyber practices; and supply-chain tiers. It is a due-diligence aid, not a universal certification. NIST SP 1326.

Turn important answers into contract terms
Do not leave high-impact answers in sales presentations or informal assurances. Align the agreement with the actual service documentation and the data path you reviewed. Consider writing measurable commitments for:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Permitted purposes and restrictions on sharing, sale, model training, or other reuse.
- Subprocessor use and the way changes to third-party providers are handled.
- Retention, deletion, access controls, security updates, and incident notification.
- Customer assessment or evaluation rights, including access to relevant third-party GAI processes and standards where appropriate.
- Notice of material service or control changes, cooperation during review, and support for an orderly exit.
Specify how you will confirm compliance with the commitments, rather than relying only on the vendor’s promise to comply. The FTC recommends written security requirements and written rules for vendor data use, sharing or sale, retention, and deletion. NIST recommends allowing evaluation of third-party GAI processes and standards. FTC vendor security guidance; NIST Generative AI Profile.

Compare vendors on the same basis
Use the same intended use and data inventory for each candidate so differences reflect the vendors’ practices rather than different assumptions. These comparison axes synthesize FTC and NIST guidance; they are not an official universal scorecard.
| Axis | What to compare |
|---|---|
| Data control | Purpose limits, reuse or training, sharing, subprocessors, retention, and deletion. |
| Security | Service-specific safeguards, access boundaries, independent verification, and incident response. |
| Transparency | Data and model information, third-party inventory, change notification, and use-appropriate testing information. |
| Contractual accountability | Assessment or evaluation rights, measurable commitments, incident and change notice, and exit support. |

Plan oversight after signature
Assign an owner for vendor oversight and set a schedule for refreshing relevant evidence. Define which events trigger a new review, such as a material service or third-party change, an incident, or a control failure. Agree how those events will be surfaced, reviewed, and escalated. NIST’s Generative AI Profile recommends ongoing supplier assessment and monitoring, and its supplier guide supports informed acquisition through due diligence. Before approval, check that the data path is understood, material claims have evidence, key risks have an owner or mitigation, and the contract makes critical practices testable. If a consequential question remains unanswered, treat that as an unresolved risk rather than assuming the answer is favorable.
