AI Upskilling FAQ: How Much Training Do You Need, and How Do You Measure Progress?

How much AI training you need depends on your work. Learn the difference between AI literacy and advanced skills, and assess progress through practical tasks.

There is no universal number of hours needed to upskill in AI. The right amount depends on what you need to do: use AI thoughtfully in your work, or develop and maintain AI systems. Set a practical goal, then measure whether you can handle relevant tasks more accurately and with better judgment.

How much AI training do you need?

Choose training by the work you expect to perform, not by an arbitrary hours target. OECD guidance distinguishes general AI literacy for people who use or encounter AI from advanced skills for people who build or maintain AI systems. Its cited publications do not prescribe a universal course duration.

If you use AI in your work

General AI literacy is aimed at understanding, using, and monitoring AI applications with critical reflection. It does not require the ability to develop AI models. Training should help you decide when an AI tool is appropriate, assess its output, recognize limitations, and apply suitable human review. OECD’s 2024 discussion of adult training for AI adoption and use describes this distinction.

If you develop or maintain AI systems

These responsibilities call for advanced, role-specific skills rather than literacy alone. The particular depth and subject matter depend on the system and the work involved; the OECD sources cited here do not set one duration for every specialist role. The OECD’s 2025 policy brief says training supply may not keep pace with growing demand and recommends expanding and better targeting both general-literacy and advanced-skills initiatives.

Why training supply matters

An OECD analysis published in 2024 found that AI content appeared in 0.3% to 5.5% of available training courses in Australia, Germany, Singapore, and the United States. The estimate covers formal and non-formal training catalogues; it excludes learning within firms and informal learning, so it is not a measure of all AI learning or global course availability. The report’s conclusion is that catalogue supply may be limited, particularly for broad AI literacy: “The majority of programmes with some AI content currently focus on advanced AI skills. Most countries could benefit from offering a broader range of courses to promote general AI literacy.” OECD, Training Supply for the Green and AI Transitions.

How to measure your progress

The cited OECD publications do not define a validated test for measuring an individual’s AI skills. A useful personal check is to compare how you handle representative tasks before and after training. Treat this as a practical approach, not as an OECD assessment standard.

  1. Choose recurring tasks. Pick a few realistic examples from your role, such as checking an AI-generated summary, deciding whether a task is suitable for an AI tool, or reviewing an output before it is shared.
  2. Record your starting point. Note how you currently approach each task, including where you are uncertain, what you check, and when you seek help.
  3. Repeat after learning. Use comparable tasks and conditions so you can see whether your approach has changed, rather than relying only on confidence or course completion.
  4. Review the quality of your decisions. Look for accuracy, appropriate verification, sound judgment about when not to rely on AI, and recognition of limitations. For specialist work, assess the skills required by the actual development or maintenance responsibilities.

These indicators are prompts for reflection, not a single score or guarantee of workplace performance. A course certificate may show completion, but the task comparison tells you more directly whether the learning helps with your intended work.

How to choose an AI course

Compare options against your target tasks and the skill level those tasks require. OECD discusses flexible and modular learning formats as ways to widen access, but the sources do not rank providers or verify the quality of any individual course.

  • Goal: Does the course teach general AI literacy, advanced development or maintenance skills, or a clearly defined combination?
  • Role fit: Are its topics relevant to the tasks you actually need to perform?
  • Prerequisites: Does it state what learners should already know?
  • Format: Is the course modular or flexible enough to fit how and when you can learn?

Do not use course length alone as proof that a course is sufficient. The meaningful test is whether its content matches your responsibilities and helps you perform the relevant tasks more effectively.
