AI may change how an insurer evaluates an application for a whole life policy used in Infinite Banking, including how quickly it reaches a decision and which risk class it assigns. It has not been shown to change the policy’s cash-value guarantees, dividends, riders, or loan terms. Those depend on the issued contract and its illustration.
How AI and accelerated underwriting affect an application
Underwriting is the insurer’s process for evaluating an applicant’s risk and determining an appropriate rate. Traditional life underwriting can involve an application, medical records, a physical exam, and fluid testing. Some insurers also offer accelerated underwriting: for applicants who meet their criteria, the insurer may use available data and analytics instead of requiring an exam.

Accelerated underwriting and AI are related, but they are not the same thing. A faster process may use data rules or other analytics without relying on an AI system in every decision. Conversely, AI tools may support parts of underwriting without eliminating an exam or human review.
The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) says accelerated underwriting can reduce processing time from several weeks to a few hours. That is a description of potential process speed, not a promise for every insurer or applicant. If available information is insufficient, an application may still be referred for traditional underwriting, including an exam or lab testing.

NAIC says life insurers use AI to help reduce issuance time, support approval or denial decisions, and assign risk classes. A model can automate, augment, or support a decision; “AI underwriting” does not necessarily mean a machine makes the entire decision without human involvement.
What changes—and what does not
The main potential changes are in the application path: how information is gathered and assessed, whether an exam is requested, how quickly a decision is made, and the risk class offered. A risk class can affect the premium quoted for an applicant.

NAIC materials and the Nelson Nash Institute’s descriptions of Infinite Banking do not establish that AI has changed the contract mechanics or performance of IBC-oriented whole life policies. In particular, they do not show that AI changes a policy’s cash-value schedule, dividend scale, policy-loan terms, or rider provisions. That is an evidence boundary—not proof that no carrier uses AI in underwriting applications for such policies. Check the specific insurer’s underwriting information and the contract actually issued.

What kind of whole life policy is used for Infinite Banking?
The Nelson Nash Institute describes Infinite Banking (IBC) as a financial strategy, not a standalone insurance product. It identifies specially designed, dividend-paying whole life insurance—ideally from a mutual company—as its preferred tool. Under this approach, policyholders may access policy value through loans secured by the policy. A policy loan is a loan from the insurer, not a withdrawal from a personal bank account; the contract governs loan interest, available value, and how an outstanding balance affects the policy.
That description reflects the Institute’s position as an organization associated with the strategy, not a neutral or universal rule for every consumer. In a November 2025 statement, the Institute reaffirmed its preference for participating whole life from a mutual insurer or mutual holding company and rejected indexed universal life as the product it advocates for IBC. Treat this as the Institute’s stated view, not an independent comparison or an industry-wide requirement.
Riders and tax-sensitive design
A paid-up additions rider may be part of a policy design discussed for IBC, but it is not a feature to assume in every whole life contract. Rider terms and premium limits vary. Premium funding also needs to be considered in light of the federal seven-pay test and the possibility that a policy could become a modified endowment contract (MEC), which can affect the tax treatment of distributions. The applicable contract and tax rules matter; an IBC label does not guarantee a particular rider, premium capacity, or tax outcome.

NAIC’s accelerated-underwriting guidance, adopted by its Life Insurance and Annuities Committee on August 14, 2024, gives regulators a framework for examining external data, predictive models, and potential unfair discrimination. NAIC says follow-up examiner work is part of ongoing oversight. The guidance is a regulatory framework, not a guarantee that every insurer’s model will produce the same result or that every application will receive an individual human review.

Rules can also depend on location. New York Department of Financial Services Circular Letter No. 1 (2019), for example, says an insurer should not use an external data source, algorithm, or predictive model in life underwriting or rating unless it is legally permitted and supported by sound actuarial principles or experience and a valid explanation. The letter also addresses sources based on protected classes. This is New York guidance, not a statement of every state’s law.

Algorithmic decisions can raise concerns about proxy discrimination: a seemingly neutral input may reflect historical discrimination or correlate with protected characteristics. A 2021 article in the NAIC’s Journal of Insurance Regulation discussed that concern. It should not be read as a current market statistic; it does not establish how often such effects occur today or their effect on IBC applicants.
NAIC states that insurers remain responsible for complying with insurance laws, regulations, standards, and consumer-protection rules when they use AI. For an applicant, that makes it useful to ask not only whether AI is involved, but what information informed the decision and what review or correction options are available.
Questions to ask before applying or accepting a policy
- Which parts of my application were evaluated using external data or an algorithm, and what sources were used?
- Can I review and correct inaccurate information, and how can I request a review of the decision?
- Could my application be referred for traditional underwriting, an exam, or lab testing? What would trigger that referral?
- Did a model support the decision, automate it, or help an underwriter make it? Is human review available?
- For the proposed whole life policy, which values are guaranteed and which depend on non-guaranteed dividends?
- What are the contract’s exact policy-loan terms, including the loan rate and how an outstanding balance affects policy values?
- Is the policy participating whole life, and which riders and premium limits appear in the actual contract and illustration?
Compare the underwriting pathway separately from the policy design. A faster decision or a waived exam does not, by itself, establish that the resulting contract is better suited to IBC. Review the insurer’s illustration and policy documents, and consider consulting a state-licensed life insurance professional familiar with participating whole life and this policy design.
