AI Threat Detection for Business: What It Can Do—and What It Can’t

AI can help security teams analyze activity and investigate threats, but detection is only one part of a program. Learn how to evaluate coverage, alert quality, response controls, and AI-related risks.

AI-assisted threat detection can help a security team sift through large volumes of activity, spot patterns, prioritize alerts, and support investigation and response. It is an aid to a security program, not a guarantee against attacks or a substitute for people who validate alerts, make consequential decisions, and plan recovery.

For business leaders, the practical question is: How can AI help detect cyber threats in my business, and what should I check before relying on it? The answer involves two connected tasks: using AI to strengthen security operations and securing the AI systems your business adopts.

What AI threat detection can—and cannot—do

Security teams deal with activity across endpoints, identities, cloud resources, applications, and networks. AI can help analyze that volume, identify patterns that warrant attention, and organize information for investigation. Microsoft describes AI use in security operations as supporting incident detection, investigation, and response. Microsoft’s guidance on securing AI also frames secure adoption as a broader responsibility than deploying a detection feature.

That distinction matters: a tool’s ability to surface an alert does not establish that the alert is correct, that a response is appropriate, or that an attack will be prevented. NIST author Katerina Megas cautioned in a September 19, 2024 article that “Using AI for improving cybersecurity threat hunting, for example, could increase detection rates but might also increase the number of false positives.” Teams need a way to assess alert quality and investigate the context before relying on detections.

The available evidence does not establish a general percentage by which AI threat detection reduces business losses or breaches. Nor does it provide an independent, head-to-head ranking of products. Treat claims about operational benefits as claims to evaluate against your own coverage, data, staffing, and response process.

Why business security has two AI-related jobs

Use AI to support security operations

AI-enabled analysis may help security staff find and prioritize suspicious activity, connect related signals, and investigate incidents. The value depends on whether the system receives useful telemetry and whether someone owns the work that follows an alert. Detection without investigation and response is not a complete security process.

Microsoft’s February 2024 Cyber Signals report cited a global cybersecurity workforce shortage of roughly 4 million professionals while discussing AI’s potential to help defenders be more productive. That is a Microsoft-reported figure from 2024, not a current workforce count or proof that AI can replace analysts.

Secure the AI systems you use

AI systems themselves need protection. NIST identifies confidentiality, integrity, and availability concerns that can affect AI systems, their data, and underlying software and hardware. Microsoft’s product documentation describes additional risks involving model supply chains, agent permissions, runtime behavior, and prompt- or content-based attacks. Those are examples of risks in Microsoft’s documentation, not evidence of how prevalent they are across businesses.

In practice, a business should consider both whether AI can improve monitoring and whether the AI applications, models, agents, data, and integrations it uses are appropriately controlled. These are related responsibilities, but solving one does not automatically solve the other.

How to put AI-assisted detection into a security process

Use a staged approach so that alerts connect to accountable people and tested procedures rather than becoming another unreviewed feed.

  1. Define what is in scope. Identify the systems, identities, data, cloud resources, AI workloads, and agents that need monitoring. Record important assets and owners so teams know what an alert concerns.
  2. Check telemetry. Confirm that relevant logs and activity data are available to the security process, and understand what the detection system can and cannot see. Missing or incomplete telemetry limits the usefulness of analysis.
  3. Assign investigation and response ownership. Decide who reviews findings, how they gather context, and how an incident moves into the organization’s response process. Establish escalation paths before a high-severity alert arrives.
  4. Validate alert quality. Review detections against known activity and investigate false positives as well as missed signals. NIST’s warning about false positives is a reason to measure alert usefulness in your own environment, not to assume that a system’s output is ready for automatic action.
  5. Set boundaries for automation. Specify which actions can happen automatically, which require human approval, and how actions are recorded, audited, and reversed. Be especially cautious about actions that could disrupt business operations or affect access to critical systems.
  6. Protect AI assets and data. Review access, permissions, configurations, data exposure, and monitoring for AI applications and agents. Keep track of dependencies and the systems that can influence their behavior.
  7. Review outcomes and update controls. Reassess coverage, alert quality, response procedures, and access as systems, workloads, and threats change. A detection setup should be maintained, not treated as a one-time deployment.

This sequence synthesizes guidance from Microsoft and NIST; it is not a verbatim control list from either authority or a claim that any one vendor implements every step.

What to check when evaluating a detection tool or service

Evaluate fit against your environment and operating model, not the label “AI” alone. Ask vendors to show how the system works with your data and how your staff will use its output.

  • Coverage: Which endpoints, identities, cloud workloads, AI applications, and agents can it monitor in your actual scope?
  • Telemetry and integration: What data sources can it use, what must be configured, and how do findings reach your existing investigation and response workflows?
  • Alert quality: How can your team validate detections, investigate context, and track false positives and missed activity?
  • Response controls: Which actions are automated, which require approval, and how are actions logged, audited, and reversed?
  • Data handling: What sensitive data is exposed to the service, who can access it, how is it retained, and what vendor or model dependencies are involved?
  • Operational fit: What staffing, implementation effort, skills, and ongoing monitoring will be needed to make the system useful?

These criteria follow from the security and operational issues described in NIST and Microsoft guidance. They do not imply that a particular product is best or that a product comparison has established a winner.

Use a framework to organize risk, not to choose a product

NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF 1.0) is voluntary and can help organizations organize how they think about AI-related risk. It is a framework, not a threat-detection product recommendation. NIST’s framework page has noted that the framework was being revised and that, in April 2026, the agency released a concept note for a critical-infrastructure profile. Because framework status can change, check NIST’s AI RMF page for the current version and related material before using it as a planning reference.

For technology-specific risks, NIST’s Adversarial Machine Learning: A Taxonomy and Terminology of Attacks and Mitigations discusses risks to AI systems and the need to consider their data and technical foundations. CISA’s AI-powered cyber defense page establishes agency interest in the area; it should not be read as a general endorsement of commercial tools.

Questions to ask before relying on AI detection

  • What assets and activity can the system actually observe, and where are the visibility gaps?
  • Who reviews and investigates its alerts, and what response authority do they have?
  • How will we detect and manage false positives before automating consequential actions?
  • How are the AI system, its data, permissions, dependencies, and integrations protected?
  • Can our team audit a response, understand why it happened, and reverse it when appropriate?
  • What evidence shows that the system fits our environment, and what outcomes will we monitor after deployment?
