A text watermark is a signal deliberately introduced while an AI system generates text; a compatible checker looks for that signal. A post-hoc AI detector examines text after it exists and estimates whether it resembles AI-generated writing, whether or not it was watermarked. The methods answer different questions, and neither result alone proves who wrote a passage or why.
How the two methods differ
| Approach | When it operates | What it looks for | What its result can mean |
|---|---|---|---|
| Text watermark | During generation | A pattern deliberately introduced into the generator’s token or word-piece choices, then checked by a compatible detector. | Whether the checker found evidence of a supported watermark scheme—not a person’s identity or intent. |
| Post-hoc AI detector | After text is written or generated | Patterns or features that the tool associates with AI-generated text. | A probabilistic classification or score under that tool’s method; it is not a universal authorship verdict. |
In a common watermark design, a model has several plausible next-token choices and the generation method structures or biases those choices to create a statistical pattern across the passage. The mark is in the wording choices; it need not be hidden characters or metadata. OpenAI says its textGrain method does not add invisible spaces, hidden characters, or unusual punctuation (OpenAI’s text watermarking documentation).

Google’s SynthID Text documentation describes a generation configuration that activates a logits processor, without requiring additional model training. Its detector reports one of three states—watermarked, not watermarked, or uncertain—and thresholds can be tuned to balance false positives and false negatives (Google AI for Developers: SynthID). As Google puts it, “Watermark detection is probabilistic.”
What an AI detector can—and cannot—tell you
A general post-hoc detector does not need the text generator to have embedded a watermark. It evaluates the finished text using its own model or method. That makes it potentially useful for text from systems that do not watermark outputs, but its answer remains an estimate whose reliability depends on the tool, text type, language, and conditions.

NIST’s text-to-text pilot, published June 25, 2025, evaluated a curated set of article groups and human- and machine-generated summaries. It found material differences among the tested generation and discrimination systems: some generators deceived most tested discriminators, while some discriminators detected text from almost all tested generators. Performance varied, and detector systems improved across rounds. NIST reported evaluation measures including AUC and Brier scores rather than a single universal accuracy figure (NIST’s text-to-text pilot).
So if a tool says a passage is “likely AI,” read that as the output of a particular system under its particular evaluation—not as proof that ChatGPT or any other named service wrote it. Scores from different detectors should not be treated as comparable unless their documentation establishes that they use a calibrated common scale.

Why a watermark check can be negative or uncertain
The text may not have been watermarked
Watermarks are not universal. They depend on providers or model operators adopting a scheme, and a checker can only test for marks it supports. The SynthID-Text paper describes watermarking as complementary to other detection approaches; post-hoc methods remain relevant for outputs from systems that do not implement a watermark (Nature: SynthID-Text).

Editing can weaken the signal
Google says SynthID Text can withstand some cropping, small wording changes, and mild paraphrasing, but confidence may fall substantially after thorough rewriting or translation. The Nature paper likewise notes that LLM paraphrasing can weaken generative watermarks. A missing mark after substantial transformation therefore does not establish that the original text was human-written.

Some text leaves little room for a signal
Short passages, code, exact reproduction, and tightly constrained factual answers offer fewer plausible wording choices while preserving correctness. OpenAI notes that short text often lacks enough material for reliable watermark detection and that code is harder to watermark. Its documentation also says the EU AI Act Code of Practice does not require marks for outputs under 200 tokens (about 150 English words) or for code snippets. That is the scope described by the cited Code of Practice, not a universal technical cutoff for all watermark methods.
What a positive watermark result proves
A positive result means a compatible checker found evidence consistent with a supported watermark. It does not establish who generated, edited, submitted, or owns the text; whether it is accurate; or what a person intended. OpenAI’s documentation explicitly cautions that a detected provenance signal does not confirm accuracy, that content is unedited, legal ownership, context, creator identity, or motive.

Nor should a watermark be treated as tamper-proof forensic evidence. The SynthID-Text paper identifies watermark stealing, spoofing, and scrubbing as ongoing research concerns. A signal can be useful evidence of provenance, but it is not an infallible signature.
How to choose the right check
- To check for a particular provider’s mark: use that provider’s compatible checker, and describe the result narrowly as a supported mark detected or not detected. Google’s SynthID Text developer documentation describes an open implementation for Transformers and a probabilistic detector; it was last updated April 9, 2025. Google also announced a SynthID Detector portal on May 20, 2025, initially rolling out access to early testers. Availability may have changed, so check the current portal status before relying on access (Google’s SynthID Detector announcement).
- When no watermark can be assumed: a post-hoc detector may provide an additional probabilistic signal. Check what generators, languages, text lengths, and transformations were covered by its validation, along with how false positives and false negatives are handled.
- For decisions that affect a person: treat either result as one input, not standalone proof. Use a fair review process and additional relevant evidence.
OpenAI’s help documentation describes textGrain watermarking and says access to its text detector is limited to qualifying research and academic organizations, with applications reviewed case by case. Provider policies and availability can change; this is not evidence that every AI service marks its text or that one provider’s checker can identify all AI-written content.

Where watermarking fits in the wider picture
Watermarks can offer a way to identify outputs from providers that participate in a scheme; post-hoc detectors can address text without a known mark, though with different uncertainties. The two approaches can therefore complement one another rather than compete as interchangeable tests.
Google DeepMind researchers reported that a live experiment assessed feedback from nearly 20 million Gemini responses and found that SynthID-Text preserved text quality in that study. That finding describes the study’s experiment, not a guarantee that every watermark preserves quality in every use or that SynthID can detect all AI text. The broader NIST overview also places detection alongside other synthetic-content provenance and labeling approaches (NIST’s synthetic-content overview).
