AI Telegram Bot with Node.js and Gemini: A Reliable Build with Cron and Fallbacks

Build a Telegram bot that calls Gemini, handles duplicate updates, retries transient failures safely, and runs recurring jobs without mistaking cron for a durable queue.

Build the bot as a server-side Node.js service: accept Telegram updates through either long polling or an HTTPS webhook, validate and deduplicate them, call Gemini through Google’s @google/genai SDK, and send a reply through the Telegram Bot API. Treat Gemini retries, user-facing fallbacks, and scheduled jobs as separate concerns. A retry should be bounded, a fallback should be honest, and a cron schedule inside a process should not be mistaken for a durable job queue.

What the bot needs to do

A reliable implementation separates five responsibilities: receiving updates, deciding which updates to handle, obtaining an AI response, delivering that response, and running recurring work. Keeping those boundaries clear matters when Telegram delivers an update again, Gemini is temporarily unavailable, or a scheduled task overlaps its previous run.

  1. Receive: choose Telegram long polling or an outgoing webhook; they cannot be active together.
  2. Validate and route: check the delivery method, identify supported message types, and deduplicate update IDs before causing side effects.
  3. Generate: send the relevant message and any deliberately retained conversation context to Gemini.
  4. Reply: send the answer through Telegram and handle delivery failure separately from generation failure.
  5. Schedule and observe: run recurring work with an explicit timezone, prevent unwanted overlap, and monitor failures and lag.

Telegram’s Bot API is an HTTPS interface. Requests use a bot token in the URL and return JSON with an ok field; the error description and integer code can help diagnose a failed call, but Telegram cautions that the meaning of error codes may change. Keep the token on the server and out of source control, client bundles, and logs. Telegram Bot API

Choose how Telegram delivers updates

Telegram documents two mutually exclusive update-receipt methods: your service can request updates with getUpdates, or Telegram can POST updates to a webhook you configure with setWebhook. Neither is universally more reliable or faster; choose based on the deployment and operate it accordingly. Telegram Bot API

Method How it works Choose it when Important safeguards
Long polling Your process calls getUpdates and waits for updates. Use a positive request timeout; Telegram describes short polling as suitable for testing. You want to avoid configuring an inbound HTTPS endpoint and can keep a poller running. Advance the offset beyond the highest handled update_id to confirm updates. Do not run long polling while an outgoing webhook is configured.
Webhook Telegram POSTs JSON updates to your configured HTTPS URL. Your deployment can expose a reachable HTTPS endpoint and push delivery fits your service design. Set a secret_token, compare it with the X-Telegram-Bot-Api-Secret-Token request header, and return a successful 2xx response after successful handling. Telegram retries unsuccessful deliveries for a reasonable number of attempts, but does not state a fixed count in this reference.

Validate, route, and deduplicate before doing work

For webhooks, reject a request whose secret-token header does not match the value configured when calling setWebhook. Treat the token as a shared secret: compare it on the server and never echo it into a response or log. Parse the update, then route only the types your bot actually supports—for example, a text message with a chat ID. Ignore or explicitly handle other update types rather than assuming every update contains user text.

Use Telegram’s update_id as an idempotency key. Telegram may deliver updates again, and a process can fail after performing a side effect but before recording completion. Persist processed IDs when duplicate work would be harmful, and record the outcome in a way that lets an interrupted update be diagnosed or safely retried. The persistent store and its retention policy are application choices, not Telegram guarantees. Telegram retains incoming updates for no longer than 24 hours. Telegram Bot API

Keep transport acknowledgement distinct from AI completion

For a webhook, acknowledge a request only after the update has been accepted for handling. If the service does expensive work before replying, Telegram may retry a delivery that is still processing; deduplication protects against repeating its side effects. A durable queue is an option when you need to acknowledge quickly and finish processing later, but only tell users that a response is pending if the request has actually been persisted and will be monitored.

For long polling, persist or otherwise safely manage the offset in relation to completed work. Advancing it too early can lose work if the process then fails; failing to advance it can lead to repeated delivery, so idempotent handling remains valuable.

Call Gemini from the Node.js service

Google’s JavaScript setup documents the @google/genai SDK and GoogleGenAI client. The API key is an authentication credential; keep it in server-side configuration, separate from the Telegram bot token, and never expose it in a Telegram message or browser code. Choose a model that is currently available to your project and verify its supported capabilities against Google’s live documentation when deploying, because model and API details can change. Gemini JavaScript setup · Gemini API reference

import { GoogleGenAI } from "@google/genai";

const ai = new GoogleGenAI({
  apiKey: process.env.GEMINI_API_KEY,
});

export async function generateReply(text) {
  const result = await ai.models.generateContent({
    model: process.env.GEMINI_MODEL,
    contents: text,
  });

  return result.text;
}

Install and configure the SDK according to Google’s current Node.js instructions; set GEMINI_API_KEY and GEMINI_MODEL in the service environment rather than hard-coding credentials or a model identifier in the source. This small function shows the generation boundary, not a complete chat-memory system.

Decide what context the model receives

A Telegram update is not durable conversation history. If you want a bot to remember earlier turns, your application must define what to store, how much context to send, and when to expire it. The cited API documentation does not prescribe a production database, privacy policy, or retention period. Make those decisions deliberately, minimize retained message data, and avoid placing sensitive content in diagnostic logs.

Handle Gemini failures without retry loops

Do not treat every failed generation request as a reason to repeat the same call. Google recommends exponential backoff with jitter for transient failures and filtering retries to appropriate error classes. Its troubleshooting examples identify 429, 408, and 5xx responses as retry candidates. The API error guide distinguishes request, authentication, permission, billing or credit, quota, and service errors. A malformed 400 request, invalid or missing key (401), permission failure (403), or depleted prepaid credits (402) needs correction or intervention rather than immediate repetition. Gemini troubleshooting · Gemini API errors

Failure category Response What the user should experience
Transient service, timeout, or rate-limit failure Retry only a small, bounded number of times with exponential backoff and jitter. Stop when the retry budget is exhausted. If recovery fails, return a brief, truthful temporary-unavailability message.
Malformed request Fix the request construction or input handling; repeating an unchanged invalid request is not recovery. Do not expose raw provider errors. Return a safe error if the bot cannot answer.
Invalid key or permission failure Check server configuration, key validity, and access permissions; alert the operator. Use a neutral service-error reply rather than disclosing credentials or internal configuration.
Quota or billing/credit problem Inspect the relevant project and account limits or billing state. Do not keep retrying unchanged requests. Give the same concise failure response until the underlying issue is resolved.

Make retries bounded and observable

For each attempt, classify the error using the SDK’s current error details, apply a maximum attempt count and an overall time budget, then stop. Add randomized jitter to exponential delays so many failed requests do not retry in lockstep. The exact retry count, delay limits, and fallback wording are product decisions; Google’s guidance does not set one universal policy for this bot.

Assign a correlation ID to the handling of an update and log that ID, the update ID, elapsed time, and a safe error class. This gives an operator a way to connect a user-visible failure with server logs without recording API keys, bot tokens, or message contents unnecessarily. Do not log raw secret-bearing request URLs: Telegram’s Bot API URL contains the bot token.

Separate generation failure from delivery failure

If Gemini succeeds but Telegram’s sendMessage call fails, the AI request itself did not fail. Record the delivery error separately so the system does not blindly call Gemini again and potentially produce a different answer. If you persist replies for retry, make that retry policy explicit and make the delivery operation safe to repeat where possible.

Send the reply through Telegram

Use the Telegram Bot API’s sendMessage method with the bot token and the chat ID from the routed update. Keep the token server-side, encode values used in a URL or send data in the documented request format, and inspect the Bot API response’s ok value rather than assuming that an HTTP request attempt means the message was delivered. Telegram supports JSON, form data, or multipart data for requests (with file-upload considerations); its API reference documents the method and response format. Telegram Bot API

Keep the ordinary fallback concise, such as: “I can’t reach the AI service right now. Please try again shortly.” If the bot queues a request for later processing, say that only when the queue durably accepted it and the service has a monitored path to complete it. An in-memory promise or timer is not a reliable promise of later delivery.

Schedule recurring work with node-cron

Use cron for work that is genuinely recurring, such as a daily digest or routine cleanup. The current node-cron v4 documentation describes cron.schedule(expression, task, options); scheduling starts the task immediately. Set the intended IANA timezone instead of depending on the host’s local timezone, especially for human-facing schedules that cross daylight-saving changes. node-cron scheduling options

import cron from "node-cron";

cron.schedule(
  "0 9 * * *",
  async () => {
    await sendDailyDigest();
  },
  {
    name: "daily-digest",
    timezone: "Etc/UTC",
    noOverlap: true,
  },
);

This example runs at 09:00 in the explicitly selected UTC timezone; change the timezone and schedule to match the intended audience. The task name is useful for identifying the schedule, including when using distributed coordination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Know what overlap prevention does

With noOverlap: true, node-cron skips a scheduled run when the previous run is still executing; it does not queue the skipped run. Choose this behavior only when skipping a late occurrence is acceptable. If every occurrence must eventually run, use a durable job system or design the scheduled task to detect and recover missed work. node-cron scheduling options

Prevent every replica from running the same fleet-wide task

A process-local schedule can fire once in every running application replica. node-cron documents distributed coordination for multi-instance deployments: it requires a stable task name and either a designated runner configured through NODE_CRON_RUN or a shared run coordinator such as its documented Redis coordinator. The documentation does not promise hard exactly-once execution under crashes or clock skew, so scheduled work should be idempotent. Use an external durable queue or workflow engine when jobs need persistence, priorities, retry policies, or stronger recovery behavior. node-cron distributed coordination

Do not use a process timer as a durable one-time retry-after-failure mechanism. A restart can discard in-memory work. Persist a retry job in a durable system, or clearly accept that it may be lost.

Operate and recover the service

Keep an operational view of each boundary rather than one generic “bot failed” counter. Useful signals include Telegram webhook pending updates and latest delivery errors from getWebhookInfo, Gemini latency and error classes, retry exhaustion, cron success or failure, and overlap skips. These are implementation recommendations based on documented status and error information, not a vendor-prescribed complete monitoring standard.

  • Keep Telegram and Gemini credentials outside source control and redact them from logs.
  • Select one Telegram update mode; validate the webhook secret if using webhooks.
  • Deduplicate updates before non-idempotent side effects.
  • Retry only transient Gemini failures, with a bounded policy and jitter.
  • Keep user-facing fallbacks honest and avoid promising a later answer without durable queueing.
  • Set cron timezone explicitly and decide whether skipped overlapping runs are acceptable.
  • Ensure only one replica runs a fleet-wide scheduled job, and make that job safe to repeat.
  • Use a durable queue or workflow system when work must survive restarts or needs stronger retry guarantees.

Implementation sequence

  1. Create the Telegram bot and configure its token only in the server environment.
  2. Choose either long polling or an HTTPS webhook. If using a webhook, configure and validate the secret-token header.
  3. Parse updates, route only supported message types, and persist update IDs where duplicate effects matter.
  4. Call Gemini through the server-side @google/genai client, with model selection and context limits configured for the application.
  5. Classify Gemini errors, retry only transient failures within a bounded time and attempt budget, and send a safe fallback when recovery stops.
  6. Send the answer through Telegram and track delivery failures independently from generation failures.
  7. Add node-cron only for recurring tasks; choose a timezone, overlap behavior, and multi-replica coordination strategy.
  8. Monitor delivery lag, provider failures, retry exhaustion, and scheduled-task outcomes; use durable infrastructure for work that must not disappear on restart.
