What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Short answer: Shopify Shop offers the clearest published spending limits for purchases delegated to an AI agent; Amazon Alexa for Shopping can make eligible price-triggered purchases when Auto Buy is enabled; Google Gemini combines shopping and checkout with a documented order view; and ChatGPT is strongest as a product-research tool, with checkout available only for some eligible products and merchants. A budget in a search prompt is not automatically a cap on what an agent can spend.
The key is to distinguish product discovery, price targeting, permission to pay, and records after purchase. Each tool handles those stages differently, and availability depends on the account, country, product, and merchant.

How to compare AI shopping controls
“AI shopping agent” can mean anything from a tool that compares products to one permitted to submit an order. Before relying on a feature, check which of these controls it actually provides:
- Budget or price targeting: Does it filter results, notify you when a price changes, or enforce a limit on delegated spending?
- Purchase approval: Must you approve each prepared checkout, or can the tool place an order without another confirmation?
- Payment responsibility: Which merchant processes the transaction, charges your payment method, and confirms the order?
- Records: Is there an agent-side order view, a merchant confirmation email, or just tracking assistance?
These are separate capabilities. A stated budget may guide recommendations without limiting the final payment; a record in a shopping app may not replace the seller’s receipt or support channel.

Amazon Alexa for Shopping: price actions can go as far as Auto Buy
Amazon’s May 2026 announcement uses the name Alexa for Shopping for the assistant formerly called Rufus. It describes product research and comparison, price tracking, cart building, scheduled actions, and Auto Buy. The distinction matters: some scheduled actions put an item in your cart for you to inspect and check out, while Auto Buy can place a purchase at a set price if the feature is enabled and available for that item.

Amazon says Alexa for Shopping is rolling out to U.S. shoppers through the Amazon app and website and on Echo Show. The app and site are available to signed-in Amazon customers without Prime or an Echo device. Example searches include “Men’s jeans under $40” and “Best toys under $15”; a price in a search is not the same thing as permission to buy automatically. Amazon says Rufus helped more than 300 million customers research, compare, and buy during 2025. That is a company-reported usage figure, not a measure of accuracy or satisfaction. ChatGPT: constrained comparison first, with limited checkout availability
Shopping Research is built for comparing options against several constraints and producing a buyer’s guide with merchant links. You can specify a budget, use filters, and refine recommendations, but OpenAI’s documentation does not establish the stated budget as a binding spending limit. Product results can also have stale prices or availability, so verify those details with the retailer. OpenAI says product results are independently selected rather than ads or partnership-influenced. Shopping Research guidance and Shopping Search guidance

Instant Checkout is a separate, limited path for eligible products and merchants. Under OpenAI’s Agentic Commerce Protocol, merchant systems validate the order, determine fulfillment, charge the payment method, and confirm the purchase; OpenAI says it is not the merchant of record. Treat the retailer’s own order page or confirmation email as the authoritative place to verify an order. OpenAI’s protocol overview
Google Gemini: checkout review and a My Orders view
Gemini can help find and compare products, including prompts such as “Find me a new laptop for university under £800” or “Help me compare carry-on suitcases by weight, material and price.” Its documented checkout flow asks you to review order details and select Pay with Google Pay. Google’s May 2026 announcement describes Universal Cart as tracking prices and stock across products. It also describes AP2 spending guardrails and says they would begin arriving in Google products in the coming months. That announcement is not confirmation that AP2’s delegated spending controls are live for every shopper, country, or merchant. Gemini shopping itself is limited by country, personal-account eligibility, and participating merchants; its order view does not replace the seller for returns or cancellations. Gemini shopping and order-management help and Google’s Universal Cart and AP2 announcement
Google has also described price-triggered checkout that asks permission and confirms the purchase and shipping details. Separately, Google reported that its Shopping Graph contained more than 50 billion product listings, with 2 billion updated every hour, in its 2025 shopping-feature announcement. Those are Google catalog figures, not evidence of comparative shopping-agent performance. Google’s agentic checkout announcement

Shopify Shop: optional bounded delegation
Shop’s connected-agent setup has the clearest documented approval default: an agent prepares checkout for you to review and approve. If you enable payment without manual approval, you can set a weekly, monthly, or total budget. Approval can create a purchase as if you placed it yourself, so check the prepared order before authorizing it.
Shop warns that connected agents can make mistakes about price, tax, availability, or return information. Account details and purchase approvals may be shared with the connected agent or platform, whose own privacy terms govern its use of that information. Shop can use order data, including orders with email receipts received at the connected address, for tracking; the seller remains relevant for order support and return questions. Quick Recap
Which one fits your shopping task?
- You want price monitoring and a possible automatic purchase from Amazon: Alexa for Shopping offers tracking and eligible Auto Buy. Confirm the setting and item eligibility before treating a target price as an order instruction.
- You want help comparing several options without delegating payment: ChatGPT Shopping Research is oriented toward constraint-based research and merchant-linked guides. Confirm current price, shipping, availability, and return terms at the retailer.
- You want a Google checkout flow and an in-app order record: Gemini documents review before payment and a My Orders view. Check that shopping and checkout are supported for your country, account, and merchant.
- You want an explicit optional spending ceiling for delegated purchases: Shop documents weekly, monthly, or total budgets for the no-manual-approval setting, with approval as the default.
Checks to make before an agent places an order
- Identify the permission level. Is the tool only recommending products, preparing a cart, asking approval for each purchase, or allowed to buy under a condition?
- Read what “budget” means in that flow. A search limit, price alert, target-price trigger, per-order approval, and total delegated spend ceiling are different controls.
- Inspect the final checkout. Verify the merchant, item and variant, total including tax and shipping, delivery address, payment method, and return terms before confirming or enabling automatic purchase.
- Keep the merchant record. Save the confirmation email or seller order-page details; use the merchant for cancellation, returns, or discrepancies even if the agent also shows order status.
Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
