There are no nine verified products to buy in the sources available here. Instead, the useful takeaway is a nine-part defensive control stack: inspect retrieved content and URLs, limit what an agent can do, require confirmation for consequential actions, and test the full system rather than relying on one detector.
What “AI search poisoning” means—and what it does not
“AI search poisoning” is an umbrella term for attempts to manipulate information consumed by AI search and agent systems. The attack can enter at different points: a page may carry instructions intended to sway an assistant, a knowledge base may be manipulated so harmful material is retrieved, or an agent may be induced to misuse an available tool. These mechanisms can have overlapping effects, but they are not the same thing as ordinary search-ranking manipulation or misinformation.

| Mechanism | Where the attack enters | What it aims to affect |
|---|---|---|
| SEO-motivated prompt injection | Website content crafted to steer an assistant toward promoting a business | The assistant’s recommendation or answer |
| Indirect prompt injection | Instructions embedded in external material, such as a web page, email, or retrieved document | How the AI system interprets or acts on that material |
| Retrieval poisoning | A knowledge base, embedding space, or index used for retrieval | Which context is surfaced to the model |
| Tool or action manipulation | An agent’s tools, permissions, or action workflow | Operations such as sending information or invoking a tool |
Google’s public-web analysis describes SEO attempts that place prompt injections on sites to influence assistants into promoting the site owner’s business. The broader categories of retrieval and tool risks are covered in a 2026 survey of retrieval-augmented LLM agents. Google’s April 2026 analysis; the 2026 RAG-agent security survey.

On April 23, 2026, Google Threat Intelligence authors Thomas Brunner, Yu-Han Liu, and Moni Pande reported a scan of Common Crawl archives. Across repeated scans of archive versions, Google found a 32% relative increase in detections in its malicious category from November 2025 to February 2026. That is an increase in detections under that scanning method—not a finding that 32% of the web is malicious. Common Crawl sampling also does not represent the whole web and excluded major social-media sites. Google characterized the observed attempts as relatively unsophisticated and said the scan did not show advanced attacks productionized at scale. Google Security Blog, April 23, 2026.

A 2025 USENIX Security Symposium study of AI-powered search engines found that directly querying a URL increased risk-inclusive responses in its tests, while natural-language queries slightly mitigated risk. Its tested defense combined content refinement with URL detection and reduced risk with an approximately 10.7% reduction in available information. That figure describes the study’s evaluation, not a guaranteed result or universal cost for other products. USENIX Security 25 study.
Nine defensive tools and controls to consider
These are nine control categories, not nine competing commercial products. Some are described features in particular platforms; others are design practices or research approaches. The sources do not establish that every consumer needs every layer, or that one named product covers all of them.
1. Retrieved-content sanitization
Sanitization can remove or neutralize risky content before it reaches a model or is rendered. Google describes a Gemini markdown sanitizer that identifies external image URLs and does not render them, addressing one route for image-based data exfiltration. This is a specific Gemini defense, not evidence of a general-purpose sanitizer that works across AI search services. Google’s layered-defense description.

2. Suspicious-URL detection inside the AI platform
URL checks can identify links that warrant blocking or redaction, but implementations and purposes differ. Google says Gemini uses Google Safe Browsing as an input to URL checks and may redact suspicious URLs in responses. OpenAI describes Safe Url as a control for detecting when conversation information may be transmitted to a third party. Neither description establishes universal protection for every AI product or every malicious instruction. Google’s Gemini defenses; OpenAI’s agent-design guidance.
3. URL reputation services
A URL reputation service can contribute a signal about a destination’s risk as one layer in a broader stack. Google specifically cites Safe Browsing in its Gemini defenses; that does not mean reputation checks identify every prompt injection, assess every page’s instructions, or protect unrelated AI search products. Google’s description of Safe Browsing in Gemini.
4. Confirmation before consequential actions
Require explicit approval before an agent performs actions with meaningful consequences. Google gives confirmation before deleting a calendar event as an example. The point of this control is to prevent an unexpected instruction from immediately changing state; confirmation is an action safeguard, not a way to determine whether retrieved content is trustworthy. Google’s layered-defense strategy.
5. Capability and permission limits
Give an agent only the capabilities it needs, and constrain the possible impact if it encounters attacker-controlled content. OpenAI frames the danger around a combination of an attacker-controlled source and a consequential sink, such as transmitting information or invoking a tool. Limiting permissions reduces what a successful manipulation can do even if detection misses it. OpenAI’s guidance on designing agents.
6. Sandboxing and communication controls
Sandboxing can isolate an agent workflow, while controls on outgoing communication can help detect unexpected attempts to send data and request consent. OpenAI describes some app workflows as running in a sandbox designed to detect unexpected communications and ask for consent. The 2026 RAG-agent survey also lists sandboxing among pipeline defenses; availability and implementation depend on the system. OpenAI’s agent-design guidance; the RAG-agent security survey.
7. Context filtering and output validation
Filtering retrieved context, detecting instructions or tainted content, and validating outputs are distinct points at which a system can catch or limit unsafe material. The RAG-agent survey identifies these as defense categories, while also noting gaps in realistic benchmarks and consistent reporting. Treat them as components to evaluate in a particular system, not as guarantees implied by a feature label. The 2026 survey of end-to-end RAG-agent threats and defenses.

8. Automated red-team evaluation
Red-team testing probes how instructions enter through ingestion paths and how they propagate through an agent’s reasoning and actions. Google Research’s PI-Hunter describes static attack-surface analysis, source-aware seeding, trajectory evaluation, and feedback-guided exploration. It is a research framework, not a turnkey consumer product. OpenAI also describes automated attack discovery and an ongoing mitigation loop for ChatGPT Atlas; that is a platform-specific security effort, not a universal testing tool. Google Research’s PI-Hunter publication; OpenAI’s ChatGPT Atlas security article.
9. Content refinement paired with URL detection
In the USENIX study, the evaluated defense paired content refinement with a URL detector rather than relying on either signal alone. The study reported an approximately 10.7% reduction in available information alongside reduced risk in its evaluation. This is the clearest published evaluated combination in the sources here, but it is a study result—not a currently available product claim or a prediction for a different system. How to judge whether a defense is useful
For a system you use or build, ask which stages its controls cover and what happens when detection fails. A detector that looks only at URLs cannot by itself constrain an agent’s permissions; a confirmation step does not establish that the content shown to the user is reliable.

- Coverage: Does the defense address ingestion, retrieval, context assembly, model responses, browsing, and tool actions—or only one stage?
- Containment: Are permissions, outgoing communications, and irreversible actions constrained even when a detector misses an attack?
- Source awareness: Does the system track where retrieved material came from and distinguish it from trusted instructions?
- Evaluation quality: Are tests based on realistic agent workflows and adaptive attacks, with transparent reporting of successes and failures?
- Information cost: What useful content is removed, how often are legitimate sources blocked, and what latency or operational work is added?
These questions reflect the system stages and evaluation gaps identified by the USENIX study, PI-Hunter, and the RAG-agent survey. Those sources also point to unresolved needs for stronger cross-layer benchmarks, provenance and trust scoring, realistic agent testbeds, and consistent reporting of attack success, cost, and latency. USENIX Security 25 study; PI-Hunter; the RAG-agent survey.
What to do as a reader
If you are using an AI search or agent feature, treat answers based on external pages as claims to verify when the decision matters. Be especially cautious before allowing an agent to take an action that sends information, changes an account, or has another consequential effect. For organizations building agents, the more durable approach is layered: make sources and permissions explicit, constrain actions, gate risky operations on approval, and test the workflow end to end. The public evidence supports taking those controls seriously without implying that AI search poisoning is already a widespread, highly sophisticated threat.
