The exact process differs by product, and companies do not publish a complete formula for how they rank candidates or choose citations. A high Google position therefore does not guarantee that a page will be cited by an AI answer.
For bloggers, the practical approach is to make pages useful for the questions they address, follow each platform’s public technical guidance, and check whether any cited page actually supports the claim beside its link. No documented trick guarantees inclusion.

How AI search engines choose sources
A useful way to understand AI search is as a four-stage pipeline. It is a broad model, not one disclosed algorithm shared by every product: each system can handle prompts, retrieval, answer generation, and citations differently.

A user’s wording may be shortened, expanded, or rewritten before the system searches. OpenAI says ChatGPT Search may rewrite a prompt into targeted queries. Microsoft says Copilot generates a short Bing query. Those are documented examples of product-specific behavior, not evidence that all AI search engines rewrite prompts in the same way.

2. Search retrieves candidate material
The rewritten or original query can be used to find web material. A system may retrieve pages that are not shown among the conventional results a user sees for the same query. Public help pages from OpenAI and Microsoft describe parts of their search workflows, but neither gives a complete account of how candidate pages are ranked or filtered.
3. The system constructs an answer
The product uses retrieved material to generate a response. The answer may combine information from multiple pages, summarize it, or leave out details. A page being retrieved does not itself establish that it will be quoted or cited.
4. The product attributes some answer material
AI search interfaces may attach links or citations to an answer. In ChatGPT Search, citations can open sources; in Copilot, a Sources button can reveal the query and sources used. These interface details help readers inspect a response, but a citation is not a guarantee that every statement in the answer is fully supported.
What the public documentation does—and does not—show
It is important not to treat Google’s AI features, ChatGPT Search, and Copilot as interchangeable. Their public descriptions document different workflows and user controls. Product availability can also depend on license, account, or locale.

ChatGPT Search
OpenAI documents prompt rewriting into targeted queries and says citations open sources. Its guidance also warns that search citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect. When accuracy matters, inspect the linked page and verify that it supports the answer.
Microsoft Copilot
Microsoft documents a short Bing query generated by Copilot and a Sources button that reveals the query and sources used. That is useful for checking the search path in that interface; it is not a published ranking formula.
Google Search AI features
Google documents a user preference feature called Preferred Sources for eligible sites. Selecting a site makes its content more likely to appear in AI Mode and AI Overviews for that user. This is a documented preference mechanism, not a promise of general citation, ranking, or inclusion for every user.
Does ranking on Google mean AI will cite your page?
No. A strong conventional position is not a guarantee of an AI citation, and the available evidence does not support a page-level prediction based on Google rank alone.

A 2026 preprint by Haofei Xu, Umar Iqbal, and Jacob M. Montgomery analyzed 55,393 trending queries across 19 topical categories over 40 days, from March 13 through April 21, 2026. In that sample, 29.8% of domains cited in Google AI Overviews were absent from the co-displayed first-page results for the same query. This is an overlap result from that study’s method and sample; it does not prove that every AI feature uses a wholly independent ranking system.
The same study found that AI Overviews appeared for 13.7% of sampled queries overall and 64.7% of question-form queries. These are activation rates in the study’s query sample, not expected rates for every query, user, or future version of Search.
Can an AI citation be trusted as evidence?
Treat a citation as a route to evidence that needs checking, not as proof that the whole answer is correct. In the Xu, Iqbal, and Montgomery preprint’s analyzed sample, 11.0% of atomic claims were unsupported by the cited pages; omission was the dominant failure mode. Those results describe the study sample and method, not a universal error rate for AI answers.
OpenAI likewise warns that search citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect. To verify a specific answer, open the cited page and check whether it directly supports the relevant statement, including its qualifications, date, and context. A link that is relevant to the general topic may still fail to substantiate a particular claim.

A separate 2026 ACM conference study by Sara Allawati, Dana McKay, Mark Sanderson, Paul Thomas, and Johanne R. Trippas used lab eye tracking. Its published abstract says participants engaged significantly more with generative AI content while continuing to engage with conventional search results in patterns consistent with earlier research. The abstract does not provide a sample size or effect size, so those should not be inferred from it.

There is no confirmed universal checklist for earning citations. The following actions are grounded in public platform guidance and sound editorial practice; they should not be mistaken for secret ranking signals or guarantees.
Answer the actual question on the page
Make the page’s subject and answer clear to the reader. Separate sourced facts from interpretation, and give important claims enough context that a reader can understand what they mean and where they apply. This is editorial guidance, not a documented citation-ranking rule.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCheck Google Preferred Sources eligibility
Google says eligible sites can be selected through its source-preferences tool and checked for inclusion in Search generative AI features in Search Console. Eligibility is at the domain or subdomain level; a subdirectory by itself cannot be selected as a separate Preferred Source.
Best Value
Google also documents optional JavaScript button and deeplink implementations that can help readers select a site as a Preferred Source. They are examples, not requirements for appearing as a Preferred Source, and they do not force general AI citations.
In a 2026 post, Google said people were twice as likely to click through to a Preferred Source and reported that people had selected more than 345,000 unique sources at the time of publication. These are figures reported by Google, not an independent study or a prediction of traffic for an individual site.
Measure each product and query separately
Track the queries that matter to your audience and note which product or feature displayed a citation, what page it linked, and whether that page supported the adjacent claim. Do not combine results from different engines into one stable “AI visibility” score: query formulation, source display, and user controls vary, while many selection mechanics remain undisclosed.
