Luminar Neo uses AI for specific editing jobs—such as detecting a sky, retouching a portrait, removing an object, or expanding a frame—rather than applying one all-purpose “AI edit.” You choose the tool and guide the result; the software’s output still needs review.
What AI does in Luminar Neo
Skylum presents AI as assistance with tasks that can involve selection, masking, retouching, or compositing. Its product materials list sky replacement, portrait retouching, background removal, and relighting alongside generative tools. Each addresses a different kind of edit, and none guarantees a particular look.

The distinction matters in practice: detecting a sky is not the same operation as removing a passerby or inventing more canvas beyond a crop. Choose based on the change you want to make, then inspect the result rather than treating the AI label as a quality guarantee. How Sky AI handles sky replacement
Skylum says Sky AI analyzes an image to locate the sky boundary, can account for water, and can add reflections. You can use built-in skies or supply your own, then adjust aspects such as horizon position, reflection amount, blur, warmth, brightness, haze, and grain. Using a custom sky
- Use a JPEG that is at least 1,200 pixels on its short edge and under 10 MB for optimal performance, as Skylum’s support guide advises.
- Choose a sky photographed with a plausible match for the scene’s perspective, lighting, and weather.
- If Sky AI is unavailable, one possible reason listed by Skylum is that too little sky is visible in the source image.
After replacement, inspect the boundary around fine branches, buildings, and other detailed edges. Check reflections and horizon alignment as well: a plausible sky can still look wrong if its relationship to the landscape or water does not hold together.

How GenErase, GenSwap, and GenExpand differ
GenErase: remove a distraction
GenErase fills an area after you select an unwanted object. Skylum advises handling one object at a time, covering the entire area to be removed, and revising the selection if the result needs work. GenSwap: replace or add an element with a prompt
GenSwap works on a selected part of an image and uses a text prompt to describe the desired replacement or addition. Skylum recommends naming the wanted object—for example, “blue sea”—rather than using action words such as “remove” or “change.” Review the generated element for fit with the composition and surrounding details. GenExpand: extend beyond the frame
GenExpand generates content beyond an image’s existing borders. It is intended to provide more room or support a different composition; it is not the same as enlarging the original pixels. Inspect the transition between the original image and the generated extension, especially where lines, textures, or objects continue across the boundary. Review AI edits before sharing or delivering them
Generated and assisted edits can alter meaningful visual details. Check the image at a useful viewing size, including at 100% where practical, and look especially closely at:

Skylum cautions that generative results can vary and may take retries or selection refinements. Its instructions are vendor guidance, not independent performance testing. For documentary, journalistic, or otherwise accuracy-sensitive work, follow the relevant publication or client standards and disclose material alterations when required.

Skylum’s FAQ lists Luminar Neo for macOS 12 or later and Windows 10 version 1909 or later (64-bit). It gives 8 GB RAM as the minimum and 16 GB or more as recommended, calls for 10 GB of free disk space, and recommends an SSD for best performance. Luminar Neo can be used as a standalone application or in supported host-application workflows.
