Yes—you can use many AI assistant features without connecting your email, calendar, or other accounts. Start with ordinary chat or a document you choose to provide. If a task needs more, check whether the assistant will connect to an account, use device permissions, see and control your screen, or operate through a signed-in browser. Those are different kinds of access, and none should be treated as risk-free.
Choose the least access that can do the job
Work out what the assistant actually needs before enabling a feature. For advice, drafting, or summarizing, a normal chat prompt or a file you select may be enough. If it needs current calendar entries, messages, or other account data, a connected app may be useful—but check the account and permissions first.

Screen-control and browser features need separate scrutiny. A computer-use assistant may see content on screen and interact with the permitted app; a browser agent may work inside a session that is already signed in. Google’s Gemini privacy notice, for example, lists remote-browser cookies containing website authentication information among data that may be processed for applicable features. That does not mean every Gemini interaction uses those capabilities; availability and access depend on the feature.
- Prompt or selected file: You provide the information for that task rather than connecting an account.
- Connected app: The provider may access data or perform actions through an account authorization.
- Device permission: The assistant may receive specific data, such as location or calendar information, under the device’s permission system.
- Screen control: The assistant may view screen content and use controls in an application.
- Authenticated browser: The assistant may encounter account data through a browser session that is already signed in.
Compare the access boundaries, not just the assistant names
These examples describe particular features, not a universal permission model for each company’s products. Settings, eligibility, platforms, and rollout can vary by account and region.

| Feature | What access can involve | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT connected apps | Depending on the app and account, choices can include asking before each use, allowing reads while asking before changes, or allowing low-risk actions. | Review the app permission and the connected account separately. Changing the permission does not itself disconnect the account or revoke provider access. OpenAI’s app-permission guidance explains the distinction. |
| ChatGPT Computer Use | Can view screen content and interact with windows, menus, keyboard input, and clipboard state in the target app. Sensitive or disruptive actions may receive additional review. | Keep unrelated sensitive apps closed and remain present during account, security, payment, or credential flows. See OpenAI’s Computer Use guidance. |
| Claude computer use | Requests permission before accessing each application and uses screenshots to navigate. The feature is described as beta for Pro and Max desktop plans in Cowork/Claude Code on macOS and Windows; rollout and interface can vary. | Review every app prompt. Anthropic says it does not recommend computer use with healthcare, financial, or other personal-record apps. See Claude computer-use guidance. |
| Claude on Android | Sharing messages or email does not require the same permissions as calendar reads, location, or Health Connect. Prompts may offer Allow once, Always allow, or Don’t allow; some actions use Android’s standard interface or sharing system. | Grant only the device permission needed for the task and change or remove it in Android settings as appropriate. See Claude’s Android guidance. |
| Google Gemini | Its privacy notice describes feature-dependent processing that can include connected-app data, device and system-permission data, screen content, and remote-browser cookies containing authentication information. | Check enabled connected services and device permissions; treat work in a signed-in remote browser as account access. The Gemini Apps Privacy Hub notice is dated June 29, 2026. |
| Microsoft Copilot Tasks | Microsoft says it submits personal information to another service or website only when the user approves an action. A recurring task may request approval at setup so it can run unattended later. | Review one-time and recurring approvals and consider what data the task could encounter. Some sites may be blocked or need manual takeover. See Microsoft’s Tasks guidance; these details apply to Tasks, not automatically to every Copilot product. |
Use a connected account cautiously
- Confirm the task needs the connection. If you can get the result by asking a question or supplying a selected document, skip the integration.
- Check the account and scope. Make sure the prompt names the service and account you intend to use. Prefer read-only access or an ask-first option when available.
- Be wary of persistent permission. An “always allow” choice can be convenient, but it is broader than approval for one task. Avoid it for sensitive accounts unless the ongoing access is necessary.
- Revoke access when finished. In ChatGPT, changing an app’s use permission does not disconnect it or revoke authorization already granted to the provider account. Disconnect the account through the relevant connected-account controls if your goal is to stop future access through that connection.
Treat computer use as access to what the assistant can see
Closing unrelated windows and keeping sensitive apps out of view can narrow exposure, but it does not make screen-control risk-free. Anthropic warns that screenshots may expose visible private information and advises against using computer use with healthcare, financial, or other personal-record apps. OpenAI’s guidance similarly recommends narrow tasks, keeping sensitive apps closed, and staying present for consequential flows.
- Keep unrelated email, banking, health, and password-management windows closed.
- Stay with the assistant when it can submit, change, share, delete, purchase, or alter security settings.
- Stop if the assistant asks for credentials, payment details, or an action outside the task you authorized.
Review approvals and recurring work
An approval prompt and an account authorization are separate controls. A prompt may decide whether an assistant can take a particular action; it does not necessarily revoke the connection that gave the provider access to an account. Likewise, a task approved to run once is different from a recurring task configured to operate later. Microsoft says some Copilot Tasks workflows collect approval during setup for unattended recurring runs, and some site interactions can require manual takeover. Read what the approval covers and whether it recurs.

Keep privacy controls in perspective
Account permissions govern access; data-retention and model-improvement settings are separate questions. Review those settings independently rather than assuming that declining an app connection answers how information supplied in chat is handled. The cited product materials describe features and controls, not an independent comparative audit proving one assistant is safest. A narrow permission, active supervision, and disconnection when access is no longer needed reduce exposure; they cannot guarantee that a service never processes sensitive data.
