1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAI can give different answers to the same prompt because a prompt does not always produce one fixed sequence of words. Models estimate likely next tokens, and the method used to select among them can introduce variation. Differences in conversation context, model version, settings, tools, or safety handling can also change the result. You can reduce avoidable variation by controlling those factors, but temperature zero or a seed is not a universal guarantee of identical answers.
Why can the same prompt produce different answers?
A language model processes the context it receives and assigns probabilities to possible next tokens. A decoding method then selects tokens to build the response. Google’s Gemini prompt-design documentation distinguishes the probability distribution from the decoding step: sampling during decoding can make the visible result stochastic. The documentation summarizes temperature’s role this way: “The temperature controls the degree of randomness in token selection.”

Temperature is only one part of generation. Top-k and top-p can also constrain which tokens are considered, and available parameters differ by model and API. As a result, “the same prompt” does not guarantee the same answer unless the rest of the effective request and generation setup also match.

A prompt sent in a continuing conversation is accompanied by earlier messages. Rewording the prompt, changing examples, adding an attachment or retrieved passage, changing output constraints, or using a tool can alter the context the model sees. A different model or version, token limit, or safety configuration can matter too. Google’s safety guidance describes fallback behavior when prompts or responses trigger safety filters, so safety handling can affect the visible result as well.

Does temperature zero make AI deterministic?
No universal guarantee follows from setting temperature to zero. Where a model supports temperature, lowering it generally narrows randomness in token selection, but parameter behavior is model-specific and other sources of variation may remain.
A 2023 study of ChatGPT code-generation requests found that temperature zero reduced nondeterminism in its tested setup but did not guarantee determinism. The authors reported zero equal test output across different requests for 75.76% of CodeContests tasks, 51.00% of APPS tasks, and 47.56% of HumanEval tasks. These are results for those coding datasets and the study’s particular setup—not a measure of how often everyday AI-chat answers vary, or a prediction for every model. See the 2023 nondeterminism study.

How to make AI answers more consistent
- Control the full context. Compare the exact prompt, system or developer instructions, conversation history, attachments, retrieved context, tools, and output constraints. To test a prompt without prior-turn influence, compare it in a fresh conversation each time.
- Keep the model configuration steady. For API requests, record the model identifier or version and generation parameters, then hold them constant while comparing results. OpenAI’s API reference documents fields including temperature and seed; Google’s GenerationConfig reference says a seed can make output mostly deterministic for a given prompt and parameters. “Mostly” is not identical to guaranteed repeatability.
- Adjust randomness cautiously. Use a lower temperature only when the model supports it and the task benefits from less variation. Google’s troubleshooting guidance warns that lowering temperature can produce unexpected behavior, including looping or degraded performance on some complex math or reasoning tasks. Follow current documentation for the specific model and endpoint rather than assuming a setting transfers across products.
- Make the task less ambiguous. State what the model should do, who the output is for, the constraints it must obey, the required format, and how a successful answer will be judged. Add examples when they clarify the expected pattern; examples are not a guarantee that every response will match them exactly.
- Test a representative set of requests. Repeat runs on examples that reflect actual use. Check correctness, format compliance, and important failure cases—not just whether the outputs seem similar. For factual or safety-sensitive uses, inspect outputs manually and include edge cases. Google’s safety guidance says “Post-processing, and rigorous manual evaluation are essential to limit the risk of harm.”
- Change one factor at a time and keep a baseline. Preserve the earlier prompt, configuration, and outputs before adjusting a setting or instruction. This makes it easier to tell whether a change improved performance or introduced a regression. OpenAI’s graders guide describes evaluation and grader concepts; the right scoring method depends on the task.
How to choose settings or compare models
There is no universally evidence-based temperature setting for consistent answers. Compare options using the same task set and judge the dimensions that matter for your use:
- Task correctness and compliance with the requested format.
- Variation across repeated runs, including whether useful diversity is being lost.
- Important or worst-case failures, especially for factual or safety-sensitive work.
- Latency and cost, when those affect the workflow.
Record the model and endpoint alongside the settings: supported parameters and their effects vary. Consumer chat interfaces may expose fewer controls than APIs, so a setting described in API documentation may not be available in a particular chat interface.

For a controlled workflow, hold the full request and configuration steady, record what was used, and evaluate repeated outputs against explicit criteria. This can reduce avoidable variation and show where failures occur. It does not establish that every AI product will return identical text on every run; the documentation and the code-generation study support no such general guarantee. No overall frequency figure for inconsistent answers across consumer AI use is established by the evidence cited here.
