AI Neural Networks Explained: Definition, Learning, and Deep Learning

An AI neural network is a layered machine-learning model that learns from data. Here’s how its units, weights, training, and deep-learning variants fit together.

An AI neural network is a machine-learning model made of connected computational units arranged in layers. It turns inputs into outputs by applying learned parameters, including connection weights, to the data.

What does “neural network” mean in AI?

A neural network is a model architecture used in machine learning. Its units—often called neurons or nodes—are connected so that information can pass through the model and be transformed into a prediction or other output. IBM notes that no single definition covers every model in this broad family, so the term describes a range of related architectures rather than one fixed design (IBM SPSS Statistics documentation).

The name reflects historical inspiration from studies of brain function, but an AI neural network is a mathematical and computational model, not a literal or faithful copy of a biological brain. As IBM explains, many later neural-network models were developed for applications that do not attempt to model biological processes (IBM, “What Is a Neural Network?”).

How does a neural network work?

A common introductory diagram shows an input layer, one or more hidden layers, and an output layer. Units combine incoming values with learned weights and may apply an activation function before passing a result onward. That diagram is a useful starting point, not a universal blueprint: real architectures vary, and some are designed for particular kinds of data or tasks (Google Cloud; Google for Developers glossary).

A simple prediction example

  1. Provide inputs. A model receives the values relevant to a task, such as measurements or features extracted from an image.
  2. Transform the values. Connected units calculate weighted combinations of their inputs and pass transformed values through successive layers.
  3. Produce an output. The final layer returns a prediction, such as a category or estimated value.

How training changes the model

During training, the model’s output is compared with a target, and a loss or error signal measures how far the prediction is from that target. An optimization process adjusts the model’s parameters, including its weights, to improve its predictions on the training data.

Backpropagation is a widely used method for working out how the error relates to parameters in different layers. It passes information about the error backward through the network so an optimizer can determine how to adjust those parameters. After training, the network uses the learned parameters to produce outputs for new inputs; it does not need to repeat the training process for each prediction (Google for Developers, “Neural networks | Machine Learning,” updated August 25, 2025).

What is the difference between a neural network and deep learning?

A neural network is a model architecture; deep learning refers to using neural networks with multiple hidden layers. Google’s machine-learning glossary defines a deep neural network as one with more than one hidden layer. The word “deep” therefore describes the network’s layered structure, not a separate kind of intelligence or a guarantee of greater accuracy (Google for Developers glossary).

What are neural networks used for?

Neural networks can learn nonlinear patterns in data, which makes them useful in areas such as image recognition and natural-language processing. Those are examples of application areas, not a promise that a neural network is the best choice for every problem (Google for Developers; Google Cloud).

Compared with simpler or more constrained models, neural networks offer flexible layered structures that can represent complex relationships. That flexibility can also come with greater data and computational demands, while the model’s many interacting parameters can make its decisions harder to interpret. Whether those trade-offs are worthwhile depends on the task, available data and resources, and the value of interpretability; there is no general performance winner established for every use case.
