Research on ChatGPT found that the tested models defaulted toward standard English varieties, while a broader 2026 study reported reduced variation in writing complexity across AI-assisted texts. That is a warning about possible homogenization, not proof that every assistant rewrites every message the same way.
There is an important distinction: an accent is a feature of spoken speech, while the most relevant evidence here examines written dialects and language varieties. For texts and emails, the practical question is whether polishing changes your local wording, grammar, or register.

What does AI polishing do to local language?
A writing assistant asked to make a message clearer, more professional, or more correct may replace locally meaningful phrasing with language it treats as standard. The message’s basic point can remain intact even as its style becomes less distinctive. That is one way repeated polishing could make writing more uniform.
This is a plausible explanation of the observed results, not an established account of how every product works internally. The effect can depend on the task, the language variety, the instruction, and the system. “Non-standard varieties,” used below when describing a study, is the researchers’ label—not a judgment that those varieties are wrong or deficient.

What researchers found about ChatGPT and English varieties
In a 2024 study, Fleisig and colleagues tested GPT-3.5 Turbo and GPT-4 with text from ten English varieties: standard American English, standard British English, and eight widely spoken non-standard varieties. The authors reported that both models defaulted toward standard varieties. The study evaluated model responses to prompts in those varieties; it was not a test of every consumer editing feature or every current AI assistant. Native-speaker evaluators found worse response patterns for non-standard varieties than for standard varieties on several measures:
- Stereotyping ratings were 19% worse.
- Demeaning-content ratings were 25% worse.
- Lack-of-comprehension ratings were 9% worse.
- Condescending-response ratings were 15% worse.
These percentages are relative differences in the study’s ratings. They are not the probability that an individual message will encounter any one of these problems.

Why “keep my style” is not a guarantee
In the same study, prompting the models to imitate non-standard writing styles was associated with lower comprehension and more stereotyping. Asking an assistant to preserve your voice may communicate a preference, but these findings do not establish that imitation is a reliable safeguard—or that copying a dialect is the right way to preserve it.
Could AI-assisted writing become more alike over time?
A 2026 study, The shrinking landscape of linguistic diversity in the age of large language models, reports three studies across seven datasets and more than 880,000 texts. Its PubMed abstract reports a 21–50% reduction in writing-complexity variance across datasets and models. This is a large-scale signal that writing assistance may reduce variation; it does not establish that every user’s messages lose local features or that all kinds of diversity change in the same way. Evidence about automated evaluation offers related context, but it answers a different question. Google Research’s record for a 2023 ACL paper says tested generation metrics were not robust to dialect and could penalize dialect features more than semantic perturbations. That finding concerns evaluation metrics, not direct proof that a particular editing product will alter a particular message. Read the Google Research record.

How to ask AI to polish a message without taking over its voice
You can make your preference explicit and keep yourself in control of the revision. For a low-stakes message, try an instruction such as:
Correct only errors that make this hard to understand. Keep my distinctive wording, grammar, and tone. Show the edits so I can decide what to accept.
This is a practical request, not a proven technical fix. The cited studies do not show that such instructions reliably prevent standardization across current assistants. Review the result rather than assuming the tool followed the request.

- Meaning: Does the revision still say what you meant?
- Voice: Did it retain wording, grammar, and register you wanted to keep?
- Audience: Is a more standardized tone useful for this recipient and situation?
- Control: Can you edit or reject the changes instead of accepting a full rewrite?
When a more standardized register may be a choice
For an application, workplace message, or other communication where wording may be assessed, you might choose a more standardized register to suit the setting. That is a strategic choice, not evidence that your local language is a mistake. The research points to a risk of unequal expectations and possible loss of variation; it does not prescribe suppressing a dialect.
The direct ChatGPT study covered selected English varieties and versions GPT-3.5 Turbo and GPT-4. It should not be generalized to every language, dialect, message, or current assistant. The broader 2026 result supports concern about convergence, but its abstract alone does not establish the detailed effects of a specific product or a specific user’s editing choices.
