Chat history is the record of past conversations; AI memory is information an assistant carries forward or retrieves to shape a later response. They can be connected, but they are not the same thing: deleting a transcript may leave a separate memory intact, and turning memory off may not delete the transcript. The exact meanings and controls vary by assistant.
What is the difference between AI memory and chat history?
Chat history is a saved record of conversations. It lets you revisit earlier exchanges and, in some products, search them. AI memory is information from earlier interactions that is made available in a later conversation so the assistant can tailor its response or continue a task.

“Memory” is not one universal technical feature. An assistant might save details you explicitly ask it to remember, infer and maintain a broader profile, summarize prior conversations, or retrieve relevant passages from old chats. A product can combine several of these methods. The key question is not simply whether a service stores information, but whether and how it makes that information available to a future answer.

A transcript, a saved memory, and a search index of past chats can be separate data or functions. A setting that stops cross-chat personalization may not erase conversations, and deleting a conversation may not remove a memory derived from it.

How do the main approaches to memory differ?
| Approach | What carries across chats | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Saved details | Specific facts or preferences saved explicitly or selected as useful context. | Can you inspect, edit, or delete individual items? Does deleting a source chat leave the saved item behind? |
| Synthesized context | A profile, summary, or evolving set of useful information drawn from earlier interactions. | Can you see or correct the profile? How long does a change or deletion take to take effect? |
| Past-chat retrieval | Relevant material found by searching or retrieving earlier transcripts when answering a new prompt. | Is search separate from memory? Does disabling one also disable the other, and can answers point back to the source chat? |
| Chat history only | The transcript remains available as a record, but the assistant does not necessarily use it to personalize another chat. | Does the service use history for any cross-chat feature, and which control governs that use? |
These are useful categories, not standardized labels. The 2023 paper “Memory Sandbox: Transparent and Interactive Memory Management for Conversational Agents” discusses working memory, context limits, summaries, and retrieval as distinct ways to handle earlier conversation information. It also explains why unclear system behavior can give users a poor mental model. That paper offers general context; it does not describe the current behavior of commercial assistants.
How do ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude handle it?
Product names and controls change, and availability may depend on account, plan, region, feature, rollout, or workspace policy. The examples below reflect the linked official help pages as of October 4, 2026; check those pages and your own settings before relying on a particular control.
ChatGPT
OpenAI distinguishes saved memories from information drawn from Reference chat history. Saved memories are stored separately from chat history, so deleting the chat where a detail was shared does not automatically delete a separate saved memory. Reference chat history can use relevant information from past conversations to personalize later responses, and the information considered useful can change over time.

OpenAI says turning off Reference chat history schedules deletion of remembered information from past chats within 30 days; original chats remain unless you delete them separately. Turning that control off does not delete saved memories. For a thorough removal, OpenAI says users may need to delete the saved memory, the chat where it was shared, and relevant copies in other sources such as Library files or connected apps. Its documentation also distinguishes Improved Memory and legacy saved memories, and notes that settings may vary by account and platform. See Memory in ChatGPT for current instructions.
OpenAI’s 2025 announcement described updated memory as combining user-requested saved memories with insights gathered from chat history, and described Temporary Chat as a way to chat without using or updating memory. Because that is dated announcement material, use the current Help Center for operational deletion and settings guidance: Memory and new controls for ChatGPT.
Gemini
Google describes Gemini “Memory” as using past Gemini chats to personalize the experience. Users can turn the feature off, find and delete past chats in Gemini Apps Activity, and correct Gemini directly. Google notes that there may be a short delay before a deleted chat stops being used for personalization.

The feature is not available in some experiences, including Gems and Live chats, according to Google’s help page; a text chat can be asked to reference a past Gemini Live conversation. Consult Google Gemini Apps Help for the current controls rather than assuming that deleting a transcript and disabling personalization do the same thing.
Claude
Anthropic documents memory that carries context into new conversations and Cowork tasks, as well as a separate past-chat search capability. Past-chat search uses retrieval-augmented generation and can surface citations to earlier conversations. Users can view and edit memory topics, delete entries, update memory conversationally, and turn memory or search off.
A conversation started with memory off remains in chat history; an incognito chat is not saved to memory or chat history. For organizational accounts, retention policies and owner-level controls can affect behavior, so consumer instructions should not be assumed to apply to managed workspaces. See Claude’s chat search and memory help page for current instructions and availability.

How should you compare an assistant’s controls?
Before relying on a setting or deleting data, identify which function it controls. Use these checks in the product’s own settings and help pages:
- What crosses sessions? Look for saved facts, an inferred profile or summary, searchable transcripts, or a combination.
- Can you inspect and correct it? Check whether memory entries or topics are visible and editable, and whether the assistant can be asked to update them.
- Are memory and past-chat search separate? Verify whether turning off personalization also stops retrieval of earlier chats.
- What does deletion remove? Find out whether deleting a memory also deletes its source conversation, files, connected-app copies, or other stored versions.
- Who gets the feature? Confirm the applicable plan, region, feature, rollout, and any workspace administrator or retention policy.
For a deletion request, check the instructions for each relevant location rather than treating a single “off” switch as a full erase. A control can stop an assistant from using information without removing the original record.

Why can an assistant seem to remember without a saved memory?
A long conversation can provide context while it remains open, and some systems may summarize or retrieve earlier material. That behavior does not necessarily mean the service has created a visible saved-memory entry. Conversely, an old conversation may remain in history even when a memory feature is disabled. Ask which mechanism is at work: current-chat context, saved details, generated summaries, or retrieval from past chats.
Anthropic’s help page suggests prompts such as “What did we discuss about [topic]?” and “Can you find our conversation about [subject]?” for past-chat search. Whether such a prompt works depends on the product’s available features and settings.
