AI Laptop Buying Guide: When It’s Worth Paying More—and When to Wait

For most buyers, an AI label is not enough reason to upgrade. Check whether your apps use an NPU, verify Copilot+ requirements, and compare the laptop on everyday value.

For most people, an AI laptop is not a good reason by itself to replace a working computer. If you are buying a laptop anyway, choose it first for performance, battery life, memory, storage, compatibility and price; treat useful AI features as a bonus. A local neural processing unit (NPU) matters only when software you actually use supports it. Browser-based AI services do not require one.

What an “AI laptop” actually adds

“AI PC” is a broad marketing label, not a guarantee that every AI feature will run on the computer. An NPU is a processor designed to accelerate certain AI operations locally. Windows software must be specifically built to use it; an NPU alone does not make every task faster, private or available offline. Microsoft describes the NPU as “a new hardware resource” in its Copilot+ PCs developer guide.

Compatible applications can use ONNX Runtime to run models on an NPU, GPU or CPU. That is a platform capability, not a promise that a particular application uses the NPU. Check the processing requirements for the specific feature you want.

Copilot+ PC is a Windows device category with a defined hardware threshold and supported features. Eligibility and feature availability can depend on the exact device, software and market. An “AI” badge or a processor with an NPU does not establish that a configuration qualifies or supports every feature.

Do you need an AI laptop for ChatGPT or other browser-based AI?

No. When you use a cloud AI service through a browser, the service performs the AI processing remotely. Your laptop’s NPU is not required for that use. If browser-based AI is your main reason for considering an upgrade, compare laptops on their ordinary merits instead.

When an AI laptop may be worth buying

You are already replacing your laptop

If an AI-capable configuration otherwise meets your needs at a competitive price, its NPU and supported local features can be useful extras. Do not choose it over a better-fitting machine solely because of the AI label.

You have a specific local AI task

Consider paying for NPU hardware when you can name a compatible Windows feature or application function you expect to use locally. Confirm that the software supports the processor architecture and targets the NPU. Microsoft’s developer documentation explains the software support required to use NPU hardware.

You need a qualifying Copilot+ PC feature

Microsoft’s IDC brief lists minimum Copilot+ requirements of an NPU exceeding 40 TOPS, at least 16GB of RAM and 256GB of local storage. Treat those as the requirements described in that brief, not a substitute for checking Microsoft’s current eligibility and feature information for your region and exact configuration. Microsoft’s PC shop lists examples, including Surface Laptop and Lenovo Yoga Slim 7x, but cautions that specifications, prices and features may vary or change.

What to check before you buy

  1. Identify the task. Write down the particular AI function you expect to use locally. If you cannot identify one, the NPU may not add meaningful value to your purchase.
  2. Verify the exact configuration. Check the model’s processor, memory and storage, then confirm Copilot+ eligibility and the availability of the feature you want. Do not assume that a product-family name or AI badge applies to every configuration.
  3. Check memory and storage for your workload. Microsoft’s cited Copilot+ threshold is 16GB RAM and 256GB storage. TechRadar’s 2026 general buying guidance recommends at least 16GB RAM and suggests 512GB SSD or more for headroom, especially when installing local AI tools. That higher storage figure is editorial advice, not a formal Copilot+ requirement. See TechRadar’s buying guide.
  4. Confirm app compatibility. Check that essential software supports the laptop’s processor architecture. For an AI workload, verify that the specific app or feature uses the NPU rather than assuming it will.
  5. Look for battery tests that match your use. An NPU can be efficient for supported local AI workloads, but battery life depends on the laptop, settings, network and workload. Manufacturer figures alone do not establish all-day battery life for your use.
  6. Compare the whole machine and the actual price. Compare similar configurations for screen, build, CPU/GPU performance, ports, warranty, upgradeability and independently tested battery life. The cited sources do not establish a universal AI-laptop price premium or a controlled value winner, so judge the specific offer against a comparable non-AI alternative.

Surface Laptop, ASUS Vivobook S16 and Acer Aspire 16 AI configurations are examples named in TechRadar’s June 2026 guidance, not endorsements or a current deal list. Verify the exact model and specification before relying on any example.

Does industry interest prove an AI laptop is worth it?

No. A Microsoft-sponsored IDC brief reports that 30% of surveyed IT decision-makers said they would buy next-generation AI PCs as soon as systems became available, while another 45% said they would buy within the first 12 months. The brief’s accessible version does not state a publication date. These are historical intentions among surveyed IT decision-makers, not evidence of consumer adoption, satisfaction or value for an individual buyer.

Should you save your money?

If your current laptop works well and your AI use is mainly through a browser, keep it. If you need a replacement, buy the best-fitting laptop for your everyday requirements and count compatible AI features as an extra benefit. Pay more for an NPU only when a specific supported local workflow justifies the cost—not for a vague promise that future software will use it.

Windows Central editor-in-chief Daniel Rubino likewise assesses that most users will see incremental benefits unless they need cutting-edge AI workflows; this is editorial opinion, not a controlled product test.
