AI intelligence testing evaluates selected capabilities through tasks, benchmarks or broader assessment frameworks. There is no single score that establishes an AI system’s general intelligence: a result shows how a system performed on particular tasks, under particular conditions, using a particular metric.
What does AI intelligence testing mean?
The phrase covers several different ways to evaluate AI. These include intelligence-style tests, competitions, task benchmarks and qualitative assessments. They answer different questions, so a useful test claim names the capability or behavior it measures instead of implying that one test captures intelligence in full.

There is no single accepted operational test of AI intelligence in the sources discussed here. NIST describes AI assessment more broadly, including measurement of accuracy, interpretability, privacy, reliability, robustness, safety, security and harmful-bias mitigation. Those characteristics require different approaches, and the appropriate choice depends on the system’s context. See NIST’s AI measurement and evaluation program.

One describes an artificial system that solves tasks requiring human-like perception, cognition, planning, learning, communication or physical action. It is one definition in context, not a universal definition of intelligence; consult the source document cited in the NIST glossary for its intended meaning.

How do AI benchmarks work?
A benchmark is a collection of task instances used to measure performance on selected metrics. A benchmark score therefore provides evidence about the system, tasks, data, conditions and metric that were evaluated. It does not automatically establish a broader capability.
Strong results may not transfer beyond the benchmark. The OECD warns that AI systems can reach superhuman performance on a benchmark without displaying the associated capability, and may fail outside the benchmark’s conditions and data distribution. A score is more informative when the benchmark resembles the intended use and the metric actually supports the claim being made. Read the OECD’s discussion in AI and the Future of Skills, Volume 1: Capabilities and Assessments.
Is there an IQ test for AI?
Human IQ and other human tests do not transfer cleanly to AI. They were designed for particular human populations, while AI systems may be modules rather than embodied agents. Different systems may solve different tasks, and their data, computing resources, sensors, tools or human assistance may differ from those available to people. A system can also be designed or tuned specifically for a test. The OECD therefore cautions that passing an intelligence test does not establish general AI intelligence.

For a practical interpretation, ask what the test was designed to support and whether its conditions resemble the real-world setting in which the system will be used. Treat the result as evidence about that evaluation, not as a free-standing intelligence measurement.

How to judge a test or benchmark claim
When comparing results, check the following before drawing conclusions:
- Capability: Identify the precise task or property being evaluated, such as reasoning, perception, task completion, reliability or safety.
- Test design: Find out what data and task instances were used, and whether they resemble the use case under discussion.
- Metric: Check what was scored and whether that score supports the claim. A task score and a broad claim about intelligence are not interchangeable.
- Baseline: If a human or another system is used for comparison, check whether the conditions are genuinely comparable.
- Contamination and adaptation: Consider whether test material may have appeared in training data or whether a system was tuned to the test. NIST’s AI Test, Evaluation, Validation and Verification program describes the use of blind data in a sequestered environment as one way to reduce train/test contamination risk.
- Resources and system boundaries: Establish what computing power, data, tools, human assistance and system components were included. These can differ substantially from human test conditions.
- Deployment context: Ask whether the evaluation reflects the application and the risks that matter there. NIST notes that how a component is measured and evaluated can change with the context in which the AI system operates.
Why benchmark results can disagree
Tests that claim to measure the same capability may not agree. A September 25, 2026 Stanford Report article described a study that applied measurement-science and psychometric tools across 56 widely used benchmarks and found repeated disagreement among benchmarks claiming to measure the same thing. The article said the underlying studies were due to be presented in October 2026. This is a reported finding about those benchmarks, not proof that every benchmark is invalid.

The disagreement makes it important to examine what each test actually measures, how it was constructed and whether its result supports the stated interpretation. A benchmark can still be useful for a specific comparison even when it is not a complete measure of a broad capability.

What current evaluation activity tells us
NIST says its AI evaluation activity dates back to the late 1960s and has included hundreds of evaluations of thousands of systems, according to its measurement and evaluation page checked in 2026. Those figures describe NIST’s own work, not the total number of AI evaluations conducted worldwide. They illustrate the range of assessment activity, rather than supplying a single universal intelligence score.
