Ask your child’s school which AI tools it has approved, what each tool collects, how the information is used and kept, and how your family can access relevant education records. AI tools may process more than names and assignments: free-form prompts, voice or images, activity patterns, and inferences can expose sensitive details. Federal privacy laws offer important protections, but what they cover depends on the data, the school’s role, the service’s practices, and the student’s age. District policies and state laws may add protections.
What data might a school AI app collect?
Start by asking about the specific tool and its settings. A conventional school service may collect information through defined fields or assigned tasks. An AI-enabled service may also invite a student to write or speak freely, analyze submitted work, or infer patterns from multiple interactions. The U.S. Department of Education’s 2024 AI toolkit for education leaders warns that AI-enhanced products may collect or generate personally identifiable information and may not make their collection practices or reasoning clear.

Information to ask about
- Account details, such as a student’s name, school ID, grade, or class.
- Prompts, chat history, uploaded assignments, and the tool’s responses or other outputs.
- Voice recordings, images, physical characteristics, device identifiers, location, and activity data, if the product collects them.
- Inferences generated from a student’s work or behavior, including information that may become identifying when combined with other data.
These are risk categories, not a claim that every product gathers each type. The toolkit illustrates the concern with a teacher entering disability information into an unprotected chat to request a lesson plan: sensitive details might then be handled under practices the teacher does not know. Ask whether students are expected to enter health, disability, family, or other sensitive information, and what protections apply.
Can a school share student data with an AI company?
Sometimes a school may disclose information to a service provider under an applicable FERPA exception, but it is not accurate to say every transfer to a vendor always requires separate parent consent. The key questions include whether the information is an education record covered by FERPA, whether the school or district maintains it or a party maintains it for the school, and whether the disclosure meets the conditions of an applicable exception. The Department’s toolkit says prior written consent is generally required for disclosure of personally identifiable information from education records, subject to defined exceptions.

- Product Dimensions: To ensure a perfect fit, please measure your screen’s "visible display area ONLY" (excluding the raised frame) before purchase. This privacy screen measures :Width: 20.94 inch (530.81mm) x Height: 11.79 inch (298.36mm). Compatible with Lenovo, HP, Dell, Acer, Asus, Samsung, and other major laptop brands. (Note: Dimensions may vary by model.)
- Two Attachments Options: Option 1: Adhesive Strips – Attach directly to the screen. Works with all screen types. Option 2: Slide Mount Tabs – For screens with a raised bezel ONLY. Attach tabs to the frame to easily slide the filter on and off.
- Premium Privacy Protection: Create a restricted viewing angle of only 60 degrees — only those directly in front of the screen can see the full content. Once outside the 60-degree front viewing zone, the screen gradually darkens to effectively shield sensitive or confidential information from prying eyes.
- Eyes Protection: Filters out 40% of harmful blue light. The matte surface helps reduce glare and reflections for more comfortable long-term use.
- High Clarity: Up to 25% brighter than standard privacy filters. Delivers sharp, vibrant visuals without compromising privacy. Maintains screen brightness to help reduce eye strain and save energy.
A vendor may also receive information through a student’s direct use of an online service. That service data is not automatically the same thing as an education record maintained by the school. Ask the district to explain what it treats as an education record, what the vendor holds on the district’s behalf, and what data the vendor handles under its own service practices. A privacy policy by itself may not explain the school’s approval decision, contract terms, or classroom safeguards.
Which federal protections may apply?
| Protection | What it generally covers | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|
| FERPA | Education records and personally identifiable information in those records maintained by covered education agencies or institutions, including records maintained by parties acting for them. | Consent is generally required before disclosure, but defined exceptions apply. Rights generally transfer from parents to the student when the student turns 18 or attends a postsecondary institution. |
| COPPA | Operators of online services directed to children under 13, and operators that knowingly collect personal information online from children under 13. | In a school setting, an operator may rely on school consent only for an educational service used for the school’s benefit, not for an unrelated commercial purpose. |
FERPA: ask the school that maintains the record
For access to or correction of a relevant education record, direct the request to the school or district that maintains it. Ask how to inspect information held by a vendor on the school’s behalf and how to request a correction. FERPA does not mean that every piece of information a company processes in its service is necessarily an education record, or that every family request for deletion must be granted.

COPPA: school consent has limits
The Federal Trade Commission explains that a school may act as a parent’s agent for COPPA consent when the service is for the school’s use and benefit in an educational context. The operator must give the school notice about its practices, and the school should consider making that notice available to parents. School consent does not authorize an operator’s additional commercial use of a child’s information. Ask what the operator does with the data beyond providing the educational service.

The Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment (PPRA) addresses certain surveys and student-information practices related to marketing. Federal materials describe parent rights concerning specified surveys and information practices, including annual direct-notification obligations for certain marketing-related activities. PPRA is not a general privacy law for every AI interaction. State statutes and district policies may impose additional requirements; which ones apply depends on your location and the tool’s use.

Can an AI app use my child’s schoolwork to train its model?
Do not assume either that it does or that it does not. The answer depends on the product, contract, settings, and current vendor practices. Ask whether prompts, assignments, chat history, or outputs are used to train or improve a general-purpose model, and whether that use is optional or can be disabled. Also ask whether student information is used for advertising, profiling, or another commercial purpose, or shared with other companies. Under the FTC’s COPPA guidance, school consent for an under-13 student’s service use does not authorize an unrelated commercial purpose.
What should parents ask the school?
Send questions to the teacher, principal, or district privacy or technology office. Written answers can help clarify how a tool is approved and what rules apply. Ask about each product rather than AI tools as a single category:

- Which AI-enabled tools are approved for my child’s grade or class, and what educational purpose does each serve?
- What information does each tool collect or generate, including prompts, chat history, voice, images, location, device identifiers, and inferences?
- Does the vendor retain prompts or outputs? For how long, and can the district require deletion when the educational purpose ends?
- Is student information used for model training or improvement, advertising, profiling, or another commercial purpose? Which other parties receive it?
- What security measures and breach-response process apply? How can a parent inspect or request correction of relevant education records, and how can the school request deletion of data held by the vendor?
- Has the district reviewed the vendor’s privacy and security terms and contract? How does it monitor changes to the product or vendor practices?
- What notices, consent, or opt-out procedures apply? Which state laws and district policies govern this tool?
- If the AI contributes to a consequential decision, is there a human review, a non-AI alternative, and a way for a student or family to challenge an error?
These questions reflect the FTC’s recommendations that schools examine the information an operator collects and uses, commercial purposes, review and deletion options, security, and retention. The Department’s toolkit also urges education leaders to consider applicable laws, involve families, and account for product changes.
How can I ask the school to delete my child’s data?
Ask the school or district what information it can delete, what information the vendor holds, and whether the district can direct the vendor to delete it. Identify the student, class, tool, and data or date range you mean. Ask for the applicable retention schedule and for a written explanation if some information cannot be deleted. The ability to request deletion is not the same as a guarantee that every record or service item can be erased; retention duties and the distinction between school records and vendor service data matter.

Why privacy questions go beyond data collection
AI-related risk is not limited to a breach. The Department toolkit also identifies concerns such as surveillance, leaks that could enable harassment or bullying, inappropriate content for younger users, and AI-assisted consequential decisions. If a tool influences a decision affecting a student, ask what a person reviews, whether the family will be told when an AI system contributes to an adverse action, and how to appeal or seek an alternative. The toolkit recommends human consideration and notice and appeal or alternative processes in relevant circumstances; it does not establish that every product or school currently provides them.
The Department’s July 2025 announcement described certain AI uses as allowable under existing federal education programs when consistent with applicable requirements, and emphasized parent and teacher engagement. That guidance concerns responsible integration and federal grant use; it is not blanket approval of a particular AI product or a substitute for checking local policy, the vendor’s terms, and the tool’s actual settings.
