AI in Operations: What 77 Real-World Deployments Show

AI Weekly’s 2026 directory lists 77 organizational AI deployments, but its status counts are not proof of universal adoption or independently verified business impact.

AI Weekly’s 2026 directory lists 77 organizational AI deployments, spanning different industries and business functions. It reports 50 as in production or with results, 31 with a reported outcome, and five as halted or reversed. Those are counts of directory entries—not a representative survey or independently audited measure of AI’s business impact.

What does the 77-deployment count tell you?

AI Weekly presents its directory as a collection of named organizational deployments, grouped by industry and function. Its stated rules exclude vendor announcements without a named customer and retain deployments that were halted or reversed. These are the directory’s own inclusion rules; they do not establish that every entry or result has been independently verified.

Directory figure What it describes
77 deployments Entries in AI Weekly’s 2026 directory snapshot.
50 in production or with results A combined directory category; it does not mean all 50 have independently verified business outcomes.
31 with a reported outcome Entries for which the directory reports an outcome. The figure alone does not establish how the outcome was measured or who verified it.
5 halted or reversed Entries the directory identifies as stopped or rolled back.

The categories should not be treated as mutually exclusive: for example, a deployment can reach production and have a reported result. The counts therefore do not support adding categories together to derive a complete status breakdown, or treating the directory as a census of organizational AI use.

Which operational functions are using AI?

The directory is organized to let readers scan deployments by industry and function. A useful way to interpret that landscape is through the operational areas Capgemini Research Institute highlights: supply chain, finance, customer service, and people operations. Manufacturing and logistics are other distinct functions to consider when comparing individual cases; the directory’s organization, rather than any one aggregate figure, is what helps surface where deployments are occurring.

Function matters because a result in one workflow does not automatically transfer to another. Forecasting, customer support, financial processes, and people operations have different objectives and constraints. Compare cases within the operational task they address before drawing conclusions about what a similar system might do elsewhere.

What results are organizations reporting?

Capgemini Research Institute’s 2025 report summary gives an average return on investment of 1.7x and cost savings of 26–31% across selected business functions. These are reported research findings, not guaranteed returns or a common result for every function, company, or deployment. They should not be substituted for the case-level evidence behind any particular directory entry.

For a company-specific claim, the key questions are what metric was used, who reported it, when it was measured, and whether it is an achieved result or a projection. A customer or vendor announcement can document that a deployment was announced or describe an expected benefit; by itself, it is not the same as independent measurement of realized value.

How should you judge a deployment’s maturity and evidence?

A status label and a business result answer different questions. A deployment can be announced, piloted, in production, associated with a reported outcome, or later halted or reversed. Production status indicates operational use; it does not, on its own, show that the system delivered a measurable benefit.

  • Establish the stage: Check whether the source describes an announcement, pilot, production deployment, or stopped system, and note the date. Status can change over time.
  • Trace the result: Prefer a named organization and a source that explains the metric, measurement period, and whether the figure is actual or projected.
  • Separate attribution from verification: Record whether a company, vendor, or independent party reported the result. Do not present an attributed claim as independently validated.
  • Compare like with like: Match the business function and outcome measure before comparing deployments; different tasks and metrics are not directly interchangeable.

What makes implementation difficult?

McKinsey describes a study with more than 100 companies implementing AI in operations over two years, alongside in-depth interviews with 15. Its discussion points to uncertain return on investment, the time implementation can take, the need for data infrastructure, and executive sponsorship. Those findings offer implementation context, not a universal timeline or ROI estimate for an individual organization.

For a reader evaluating a proposed deployment, these factors are practical dependencies rather than afterthoughts: the business case must survive uncertainty about returns, the underlying data must support the workflow, and leaders need to sponsor implementation beyond the initial pilot. A successful demonstration alone does not establish that a system is ready for sustained operational use.
