AI is entering enterprise mobile apps in two ways: teams use it to build and test applications, and they add AI-powered features to the apps employees and customers use. Those features range from image and document analysis to translation, forecasting, and workflow assistance. Choosing where AI runs—and how it is governed—depends on the task, connectivity, data sensitivity, latency, and available devices.
What AI in enterprise mobile apps includes
AI in mobile development is broader than adding a chatbot. It includes tools used during development and testing, as well as capabilities embedded in an app. An embedded feature might recognize an image, analyze a document, translate speech, forecast demand, or help a user complete a workflow.

The design question is not simply whether an app uses AI. Teams also need to decide how much autonomy it has, where computation happens, what data it can access, and how its behavior will be evaluated.
Examples of enterprise mobile AI
Operations and frontline work
Apple’s enterprise developer materials describe on-device scenarios it says are in production, including retail stock counts and planogram compliance. These illustrate how a phone or tablet can support work directly at the point of activity; they are Apple’s platform examples, not independent verification of every deployment.

In manufacturing and logistics, use cases include equipment-condition tracking and monitoring movable assets and goods. Ericsson’s March 2026 report, based on research commissioned from Arthur D. Little, groups examples across tracking and monitoring, connected operations, enterprise collaboration, customer engagement, and digital devices.
Healthcare, finance, and customer engagement
Apple also cites healthcare imaging and real-time translation among its on-device enterprise scenarios. Ericsson’s commissioned report describes patient monitoring, predictive fraud detection, personalized customer engagement, connected vehicles and wearables, and conversational interaction.
Ericsson and Arthur D. Little surveyed more than 100 enterprise CxOs, senior decision makers, and managers across North America, Europe, and Asia, spanning manufacturing, healthcare, retail, financial services, and public safety. The examples show the breadth of reported use cases, not a universal adoption pattern.

Assistants and agents are not the same
An assistant responds to a person’s input or helps with a task; a task-specific agent may carry out a complex, multi-step task. Gartner cautions against “agentwashing”—presenting an assistant as an agent when it does not have that level of autonomy.
Gartner forecast in an August 2025 release that 40% of enterprise applications would include task-specific agents by the end of 2026, compared with less than 5% at the time. This is a forecast, not a confirmed measurement of 2026 adoption. The more actions a feature can take, the more important it is to set clear limits, approval points, and oversight.
Should AI run on the device or in the cloud?
Neither approach is automatically best. Apple describes both on-device and cloud AI options, while Ericsson treats mobile connectivity and cloud computation as complementary foundations for enterprise AI. The right choice depends on the task and the organization’s operating constraints.

| Consideration | On-device processing | Cloud processing |
|---|---|---|
| Latency and connectivity | Can respond without a network when the model and feature support offline use. | Depends on a connection to reach the service; connectivity and reliability matter for real-time features. |
| Available compute | Bounded by the device’s capabilities and the model that can run there. | Uses remote computation, which can support workloads unsuitable for a mobile device. |
| Data handling | May keep some processing on the device, but teams still need to examine what the app collects, stores, or transmits. | Requires careful review of data sent to and handled by the service. |
| Operational model | Requires attention to supported devices, model delivery, and on-device evaluation. | Requires dependable service infrastructure, network access, and management of the cloud component. |
These are design trade-offs, not guarantees: on-device execution does not by itself make an app private, and cloud execution does not by itself make it insecure. Apple’s framework materials cover on-device model development and structured evaluation. Ericsson’s report identifies real-time data, reliable connectivity, and infrastructure maturity as factors in scaling enterprise AI.

This is a reported plan, not evidence that the shift was completed or that the figure applies to every enterprise.
Why mobile infrastructure and managed deployment matter
An AI feature depends on more than its model. Mobile connectivity, cloud services, device capability, application distribution, and support operations all shape whether it works reliably at scale. Ericsson’s March 2026 commissioned study found that nearly 90% of surveyed enterprises viewed AI as an essential contributor to success over the next two to three years, while about 10% said they had successfully scaled AI to unlock its full value. Those figures reflect the study’s sample of more than 100 leaders across three regions and five industries, not a universal benchmark.

Managed-device controls can help organizations configure and distribute apps consistently. Google’s June 2025 Android Enterprise feature update describes capabilities such as security protections, identity checks, provisioning, audit logs, and private application distribution. Availability can depend on OS version, device, and region. Device-management controls complement—but do not replace—review of the app’s model, data flows, permissions, and third-party components.

AI changes app behavior and can introduce new data flows, while apps already rely heavily on external code. A security review should cover the complete app, not only the model or the screen where an AI feature appears.

- Map what AI features do, what inputs they use, and whether processing occurs on-device or in the cloud.
- Inventory third-party software development kits (SDKs) and libraries, then assess their security and AI-related risks before release.
- Monitor app behavior after deployment and align findings with the organization’s security controls.
- Review permissions, data retention, network connections, and the actions an assistant or agent is allowed to take.
- Use device setup, identity, provisioning, audit, and distribution controls where they fit the deployment, while separately assessing the app itself.
A NowSecure release published in 2026 reports results from a TrendCandy-conducted survey of 485 senior mobile application security leaders at North American organizations with at least 1,000 employees. Fieldwork took place in April–May 2026, and the reported margin of error was ±4% at 95% confidence. In that sample, 37% said their organizations had not implemented AI behavioral monitoring as a security control. Also, 68% said more than half of their mobile application code consisted of third-party SDKs and libraries, while 49% said they always assessed SDKs for security or AI-related risks before release. These are survey responses from a defined group, not a census of all companies.
What to evaluate before adding an AI feature
- Define the job. Specify the user task and the result the feature should produce. Decide whether it should assist a person or autonomously complete steps.
- Choose the processing location. Compare latency, network availability, device capability, data sensitivity, and the operational requirements of on-device and cloud options.
- Set boundaries and oversight. Limit data access and permitted actions; determine where a human must review or approve an outcome, especially for multi-step actions.
- Evaluate the feature. Test it against the actual workflow and define how its performance and failure cases will be assessed. Apple describes structured evaluation as part of its platform approach.
- Prepare the mobile environment. Check device compatibility, connectivity, app distribution, provisioning, identity, and applicable management controls.
- Review the full software supply chain. Inventory SDKs and libraries, assess them before release, and monitor AI-related behavior after deployment.
What adoption figures do—and do not—show
Several recent figures point to growing interest, but they measure different things. NowSecure’s 2026 survey release says 81% of its respondents reported generative AI as a mobile-app use case and 71% reported AI agents. The same release contains conflicting figures for the share with a formal AI governance policy, so that percentage is not reliable enough to repeat here.
These findings, Gartner’s forecast, and Ericsson’s commissioned enterprise survey each have distinct samples and methods. They can indicate reported use cases, plans, or expectations; none establishes that every enterprise has adopted AI successfully or that a forecast has already come true.
