AI-Generated Content Detectors: What They Can and Can’t Prove

AI writing detectors produce estimates, not authorship records. Their results vary by text and test conditions, so a flag should lead to a fair review—not a verdict.

AI-generated-content detectors can flag text whose patterns resemble material produced by AI, but their scores do not identify an author or prove that a person used AI. Treat a result as a reason to investigate further—not as a verdict. Accuracy varies with the text, language, model, editing, threshold, and evaluation method, and no universal accuracy rate applies to every detector.

What an AI writing detector actually tells you

A detector analyzes a submitted passage for signals its system is designed to recognize, then returns a classification or score. That output is an estimate under the detector’s particular model and threshold. It is not an authorship record: the tool does not know who wrote the passage, and a score alone cannot establish that a named person used AI.

Scores from different products should not be treated as readings on a shared scale. Without evidence that a detector has been calibrated for a particular interpretation and setting, a percentage should not be read as the probability that someone is guilty of misconduct.

How accurate are AI writing detectors?

There is no single, context-free accuracy figure for AI detectors. Results depend on what was tested, including the writing domain, language, length, AI models, degree of editing, decision threshold, and whether the evaluation resembles the detector’s intended use.

A 2025 Association for Computational Linguistics evaluation tested detection methods on domains, datasets, and models unfamiliar to them. In some tested settings, the true-positive rate at a 1% false-positive rate was as low as 0%. That is a result for those evaluation conditions, not a general estimate of every tool’s performance. Read the ACL evaluation.

NIST’s 2024 Generative AI pilot included text-to-text generation and discrimination tasks. Its framing underscores that detector performance is an evaluated capability under defined conditions, not a permanent property that can be summarized by one number. See NIST’s pilot study.

A separate 2025 study examined detectors on academic abstracts and introductions and reported moderate-to-high detection in its tested setup, while warning about false-positive risks. Its results concern those texts and conditions; they do not establish performance for every genre or use case. Read the study.

What to look for in a performance claim

Accuracy by itself can obscure the cost of mistakes. A useful comparison reports the true-positive rate alongside the false-positive rate at a stated threshold, and explains the test conditions. The false-positive rate matters because a detector can incorrectly flag human writing.

  • Was AI text edited, translated, or paraphrased before testing?
  • Were the tested domains and models familiar to the detector, or deliberately unfamiliar?
  • At what threshold were results measured, and what were the true-positive and false-positive rates?
  • Who conducted or funded the evaluation, and are its method or dataset available?

Can an AI detector falsely flag human writing?

Yes. False positives are a documented concern, and their consequences can be serious when a score is used to accuse a student, employee, or writer. A false-positive rate describes errors in a particular evaluation; it does not guarantee the same rate for a different population, text type, or setting.

For that reason, a detector flag should prompt a fair review rather than determine the outcome. A high score is not proof of misconduct, and a low score is not proof that a passage was written by a person.

Can detectors tell if something was written by ChatGPT?

They can classify text that resembles patterns associated with AI-generated writing, but that is different from verifying that ChatGPT—or any particular model—created it. OpenAI says ChatGPT has no knowledge of whether arbitrary content is AI-generated or whether it generated that content. Asking ChatGPT to authenticate a passage therefore is not a verification method. See OpenAI’s guidance.

How text watermarking differs from a detector score

Watermarking is a provenance approach, distinct from a third-party classifier that estimates whether text appears AI-generated. A watermark signal can be checked only when the relevant method and settings apply; it is not a universal test for arbitrary passages.

OpenAI’s current provenance guidance reports language-specific results for its watermarking approach across 24 official EU languages. It gives detection rates of 69.0% for Spanish and 42.2% for Romanian at a 1% false-positive rate. These figures describe OpenAI’s watermark results, not the accuracy of third-party AI writing detectors, and should be read in the context of the method and languages covered. Read OpenAI’s provenance guidance.

What to do when a detector flags a passage

  1. Preserve the record. Keep drafts, notes, and revision history that show how the work developed.
  2. Ask for context. Give the writer a chance to explain their process and respond to the concern.
  3. Review independent evidence. Consider relevant context through a fair process rather than relying on the detector score alone.
  4. Check the tool’s limits. Confirm whether its evaluation covers the text’s language, genre, model, and editing conditions before giving its output weight.

People can also misjudge AI-written text. An ACL 2025 study examined human judgments of writing from commercial models including GPT-4o, Claude, and o1, and released its dataset and code. That work concerns people’s ability to recognize AI text; it should not be confused with an automated detector’s performance. See the ACL study on human judgments.
