Choose an AI English-speaking app by the practice it actually offers—not by the “AI” label. Open conversation, guided roleplay, a structured speaking course and pronunciation analysis solve different problems. Compare feedback, course structure, language and device support, and plan limits before paying; an app’s feature list alone does not show that it improves speaking proficiency.
Start with the kind of speaking practice you want
“AI speaking app” can describe several distinct activities. Decide what you want to do during a session first; then compare apps that support that format.

- Open conversation: Useful if you want room to choose topics and practise speaking without following a fixed script. It also asks you to steer the session yourself.
- Guided roleplay: Gives you a scenario or task to respond to, which can make practice easier to start and keep focused.
- Structured curriculum and drills: Better suited to learners who want sequenced lessons and targeted exercises alongside conversation.
- Pronunciation analysis: Focuses on how speech sounds are produced, rather than on open-ended conversation alone.
- Human language exchange: An alternative if your priority is talking with another person. Partner availability and quality can vary.
These formats are not interchangeable, and no single format is automatically best for every learner.

Feedback differs in both timing and detail. ELSA’s feature comparison describes response-level feedback in supported lessons; Duolingo Max’s Roleplay is described as giving feedback after an interaction, while Video Call provides post-call feedback or a transcript. Those differences affect whether you can adjust while practising or review afterward.

Pronunciation scoring is a narrower kind of feedback than conversation coaching. ELSA is described as pronunciation-focused, with phoneme-level feedback as a product feature, but that description does not establish that its scoring evaluates every accent equally. Check what the specific lesson or feature assesses before treating a score as a complete judgment of your speaking.
How the apps differ
| App | Practice and structure | Feedback and important limits |
|---|---|---|
| Speak | A speaking-oriented curriculum described in an independent review includes drills, roleplay and an open tutor mode. Premium Plus is described as adding personalization, mistake-targeted lessons and expanded custom lessons. | Pronunciation Coach is limited to English learners. Hands-on review conclusions apply to the review’s stated test languages and dates, not every learner or language. |
| ELSA Speak | Includes AI roleplays or chats, an AI Conversation Coach and Speech Analyzer under Premium, according to the feature comparison. The independent review characterizes it as pronunciation-focused. | Described as English-only, with lesson and platform constraints. The feature comparison describes response-level feedback in supported lessons; phoneme-level feedback is a product feature, not proof of equal scoring across accents. |
| Duolingo Max | Includes Video Call and Roleplay, according to the feature comparison. | Roleplay is described as providing feedback after the interaction; Video Call as providing post-call feedback or a transcript. Availability varies by language or course. |
| HelloTalk | VIP tools help users find and communicate with human language partners; this is not an AI conversation scenario. | Partner response availability and quality vary. Choose it for human exchange, not for the assumption of a consistent AI-led lesson. |
These descriptions come from product-feature comparisons and one publisher’s reported app test, not a learning-efficacy trial. The independent review says it tested five apps from 15 to 28 June 2026 using shared Spanish and French prompts, assessing conversation quality, pronunciation feedback, curriculum, language coverage and paid annual value. Its findings should be read within that scope, not as a universal ranking or proof that an app raises proficiency.

Check language, device and plan access before subscribing
A feature may depend on more than the app name. Confirm that the language you want to practise, your device and your region support the particular feature, and that your plan unlocks it. Also check whether usage is capped. For example, the feature comparison notes language or course variation for Duolingo Max and lesson or platform constraints for ELSA Speak.
- Find the exact feature you intend to use, such as a roleplay, open tutor, pronunciation analysis or video call.
- Confirm that it supports your target language and is available on your device and in your country.
- Check the plan tier, any usage limit, trial terms and renewal details in the official app or checkout before paying.
- Compare the actual practice and feedback against your goal; do not infer learning effectiveness from feature availability.
Treat listed prices as dated, local snapshots
A comparison published on 15 August 2026, with a snapshot checked on 6 August 2026, reported Japan-market annual Speak prices of ¥19,800 for Premium and ¥29,800 for Premium Plus. These are dated Japan-specific figures, not live quotes or prices for other markets. That comparison also said some monthly details could not be confirmed from static pages. It reported multiple ELSA plan durations and sale prices as of its snapshot, and said Duolingo Max could be purchased only in the mobile app, with pricing not shown on the website. Verify the current price, billing interval, tax treatment, trial and renewal terms in your own region at checkout.

Use evidence carefully
Feature descriptions tell you what a company says a product can do; they do not, by themselves, show that learners become more proficient. A reported product test can help compare the tested experience, but its results depend on the apps, languages, prompts, dates and criteria used. Keep those claims separate when choosing: select the practice format and feedback you will use, then assess whether the app’s supported language, device and plan fit.
ELSA’s figure of “over 90 million learners” is a vendor-reported reach figure relayed by AI編集部 in its 2026 comparison, not an independently audited user count. It is not evidence of learning outcomes.
