AI can make phishing messages faster to write, easier to translate and more convincing—but the available evidence does not show that AI-generated phishing alone is causing SOC alert growth. To reduce Tier 1 overload without hiding real incidents, improve the context analysts receive, automate only well-defined low-risk work, and keep human review for ambiguous or consequential decisions.
Why AI phishing adds pressure—but does not explain every alert
The FBI says generative AI can help criminals create believable text faster, reduce language errors and support social engineering, including spear phishing. It also describes synthetic images, audio and video being used in impersonation schemes. As the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center put it in a December 3, 2024 public service announcement, “Generative AI reduces the time and effort criminals must expend to deceive their targets.”

That supports concern about the scale and plausibility of attacks. It does not count enterprise phishing messages or SOC alerts, or establish that AI phishing is the single cause of alert overload. Alert pressure also reflects the way teams collect, route and investigate signals: fragmented consoles and manual data gathering can consume time before an analyst reaches a decision.
What the available workload figures show
The figures below describe different surveys and populations; they are not universal SOC benchmarks. Microsoft Security summarized both the IDC and Omdia findings, while Splunk published its own survey results.
#1 Best Overall
| Study and scope | Reported finding | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| IDC, November 2025; findings summarized by Microsoft Security on December 16, 2025. Microsoft sponsored the white paper. | 77% of security teams cited alert fatigue as a top challenge; 33% of surveyed IT and security professionals’ time went to repetitive, low-value tasks such as alert triage and compliance checks; 31% of phishing alerts were not investigated each week. | These are study respondents’ reported workload figures, not measured rates for every SOC. |
| IDC, November 2025; AI adopters, as summarized in the same Microsoft-sponsored study. | Respondents reported phishing triage taking 30 minutes before AI assistance and 3 minutes with it. | This is an adopter-reported example, not a controlled guarantee, a typical result for every SOC or a promised productivity multiplier. |
| Omdia, survey conducted June 25–July 23, 2025; 300 SOC professionals at organizations with more than 750 employees in the US, UK, Australia and New Zealand. Findings summarized by Microsoft on February 17, 2026. | Respondents used an average of 10.9 consoles; 66% said their SOCs lost 20% of the week to data aggregation and correlation; 46% of alerts were estimated to be false positives and 42% went uninvestigated. | These are survey findings for the stated sample and geography, not a universal alert rate or time target. |
| Splunk, State of Security 2025 survey. | 59% of respondents said they faced too many alerts, 55% too many false positives, and 59% said AI moderately or significantly boosted SOC efficiency. | These are self-reported survey perceptions; they do not prove that an AI rollout caused a measured efficiency gain. |
Together, the findings point to a workload problem involving alert volume, incomplete investigation and the effort of stitching evidence together. They do not establish one cause or a single fix.
How to reduce Tier 1 workload without losing important alerts
1. Establish a baseline before changing the workflow
Measure phishing reports separately from machine-generated detections: they arrive with different evidence and need different triage paths. For each category and alert source, record:
Rank #2
- Matt-laminated and greaseproof pages ensure glare-free reading and long life
- The outside covers are made from a new rubberized material for better Handling and Grip
- All the Tool Holder Identification Sections now include a full INCH section along with a METRIC section
- Updated and Improved Index Searching
- Queue age and time to first review.
- Investigation time, closure and escalation rates.
- Repeat or duplicate alerts and how often analysts override suggested outcomes.
- How many closed alerts, when sampled later, should have been escalated.
These are practical measures for a local baseline, not thresholds prescribed by the cited studies.
2. Reduce context switching
Map the consoles and data sources analysts actually use for common phishing investigations. Where the workflow permits, bring the evidence into one case record: email headers, sender and domain reputation, URL or attachment analysis, identity sign-in context, endpoint telemetry and related reports. Microsoft’s summary of Omdia research describes fragmented consoles and manual aggregation as workload burdens; it does not prescribe a particular vendor architecture.
3. Enrich the case before asking for a verdict
Automate evidence gathering and ticket preparation where possible. Normalize sender and URL fields, attach authentication and reputation results, correlate duplicate reports, and collect relevant identity and endpoint activity. Preserve where each piece of evidence came from and when it was collected so an analyst can verify it.
Google Cloud’s April 28, 2025 description of a Security Operations triage agent said it would gather context, investigate, render a verdict and keep an audit log. That is a vendor product description, not independently verified performance. The article described the agent as expected to preview for select customers in Q2 2025; that date is historical and does not establish current availability or the feature’s present form.

4. Automate predictable, low-risk cases first
CISA’s Enabling Automation in Security Operations: Strategy for Efficient Process Automation frames automation around conditions defined by local risk policy. In practice, workflows can have different outcomes:
- Close or discard: use only when approved conditions establish that an item is irrelevant.
- Take an action: do so only when local policy authorizes that specific response under the conditions observed.
- Enrich and escalate: provide context and a recommendation for analyst review when confidence, impact or missing evidence calls for judgment.
Start with duplicate suppression, deterministic enrichment and repeatable actions with limited downside. Do not broadly auto-close user-reported phishing merely because a model labels it benign.
5. Keep people accountable for consequential decisions
Document which decisions the system can make, which it can only recommend, who reviews or overrides its output, and who owns escalation. Keep records of inputs, evidence, decisions and resulting actions. Define a rollback and incident path for incorrect model behavior, poor-quality data or abuse. NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework Playbook recommends clear oversight roles and ongoing monitoring of performance and trustworthiness; CISA’s strategy emphasizes local risk policy and analyst approval patterns.
6. Test for net benefit, not just faster handling
Compare an AI-assisted or automated workflow with the existing process on representative alert types. Track time saved alongside false-negative sampling, reopened cases, escalation quality, analyst overrides and whether actions can be reversed. Include routine cases and edge cases, and continue long enough to see whether results hold beyond a short demonstration. NIST’s playbook supports monitoring and comparison, but the cited sources set no universal pilot duration or minimum accuracy threshold.

“AI-powered” is not enough to establish fit. Compare systems against your evidence, controls and existing operations rather than treating vendor claims as a ranking.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Evidence integration: Can it collect the email, identity, endpoint and threat-intelligence context your team needs?
- Transparency: Can analysts inspect the evidence, decision basis and action history?
- Control: Can the team set local conditions, allowlists, approval gates and boundaries for reversible responses?
- Workflow fit: Does it work with current case management, SIEM, SOAR and reporting processes without adding more console work?
- Evaluation: Can you compare results with a local baseline and sample closed alerts for misses?
- Operational resilience: Are permissions, audit records, failure handling and a manual fallback documented?
These are decision criteria drawn from CISA’s locally approved automation approach, NIST’s governance recommendations and vendor descriptions of integrations and audit trails—not results of a comparative product test.
What the claims do—and do not—establish
Reported speed improvements are worth testing, not assuming. The 30-to-3-minute phishing triage example comes from AI adopters in a November 2025 IDC study sponsored by Microsoft Security. Splunk’s 2025 AI-efficiency figure reflects respondents’ self-reported perceptions. Neither establishes the outcome a particular SOC will get.
The cited evidence does not establish that AI-generated phishing is the sole or quantified cause of rising SOC alert volume. It also does not establish a universal alert-fatigue rate, triage-time target, model-accuracy threshold, expected labor saving or best platform for every SOC. Measure the local workflow and preserve a way to detect when automation gets a decision wrong.
