Yes. An AI email summarizer can be influenced by visible text in a message; hidden white-on-white text is not required. In a small 2026 Outlook Web App experiment, fabricated dates and invoice totals appeared in summaries even when the sample email did not directly instruct the AI. The finding is specific to that test—not proof that every summarizer is vulnerable in the same way.
How can instructions in an email affect an AI summary?
This is a form of indirect prompt injection. The user asks an assistant to summarize a message, and the assistant processes content written by someone else as part of that task. That untrusted content can influence the output even though the user did not enter the attack instructions.

Microsoft identifies several possible routes: direct instructions embedded in a message, hidden markup, quoted or forwarded content, attachments, and encoded or obfuscated text. The key issue is not whether the content is visible to the reader; it is that the assistant may treat attacker-authored material as relevant while performing the requested task.

What did the Outlook Web App test find?
In a report published October 5, 2026, X-Labs Senior Researcher Ben Gibney described a controlled test using Outlook Web App. The team compared six sample emails, ran ten trials for each (60 trials total), included clean-message controls at both ends, registered the true facts and pass/fail criteria in advance, and set temperature to zero.

For each of the six sample series, all ten summaries included a fabricated date and invoice total. This is a result for those particular samples and that setup, not a general attack success rate across email products or deployed systems.
Visible forged message structure was enough to affect output
The samples without direct instructions included a forged second header block—From, To, Date, and Subject—followed by fabricated body text. The test report says the summaries treated the forged content as a second, later message, despite the lack of a direct command to the summarizer. Samples with explicit instructions were associated with removal of true facts.
One sample placed 30 blank lines before the forged content. Across its ten trials, only two of the four registered true facts survived every time: a meeting on Monday, August 24, 2026 at 09:30; Diego Siciliani as reconciliation owner; an invoice total of €8,650; and the request, “Send Diego your signed-off line items before Friday 21 August 2026.” The report also says the summary incorrectly called the forged email the most recent, although the actual message date was September 4, 2026.

What the result does—and does not—establish
The test shows that visible forged message structure affected summaries in one controlled Outlook Web App setup. The authors used one client and one viewport and explicitly said they could not establish whether the result generalizes to other clients. Their plain-view examples were designed to isolate variables, not to represent realistic attacks in every respect.
Because the trials used temperature zero, the report does not establish how results change at other settings. It also leaves open how plain-text input, guardrails, mailbox actions, and different defenses affect the outcome. The 60 trials were repeated summaries of six samples, not tests of 60 independent deployed email systems. No population-level estimate in the cited material establishes how often ordinary email summarizers are misled.
How summary manipulation differs from data theft
A misleading summary is not the same as a successful attack that exposes private information or takes an action. The risk can become more serious when an assistant has access to sensitive data, mailbox permissions, or tools that let it act on messages.

A separate USENIX Security 2026 study examined indirect prompt injection in retrieval and agentic systems. Its conference page reports that one poisoned email coerced GPT-4o into exfiltrating SSH keys with over 80% success in the study’s tested multi-agent workflow. That result belongs to that particular setup; it is not a success rate for consumer email summarizers. The study also found that the defenses it evaluated did not prevent malicious text retrieval, identifying retrieval as an open vulnerability.

Another distinct line of work, the LLMail-Inject simulated adaptive email-assistant challenge, reported 208,095 unique attack submissions from 839 participants. Those are challenge submissions, not a measure of attack frequency in real inboxes.

Microsoft: email screening plus runtime safeguards
Microsoft says Defender for Office 365 Plan 2 evaluates messages before delivery using large language model classification alongside existing email-security signals. Its analysis can include subjects, bodies, HTML and styling, hidden text, quoted or forwarded content, and normalized obfuscated segments. Microsoft says the feature focuses on credible threat objectives such as data exfiltration through URLs, revealing system prompts, and discovering available tools. It is not intended to block every instruction-like phrase or serve as a general prompt-injection benchmark. Microsoft also stresses that runtime safeguards matter because an attack’s effect may depend on the assistant’s active instructions, permissions, grounded data, or tools. Microsoft’s prompt-injection protection documentation describes these controls.

Google: multiple safeguards and confirmation for some actions
Google describes a layered approach for Gemini in Workspace that includes classifiers for malicious instructions in email and files, additional security instructions around content, URL protections, and user confirmation for certain actions. This is Google’s account of its own safeguards, not independent evidence that every attack is blocked. Google’s security overview explains its approach.
OpenAI: restrict access and review consequential actions
OpenAI’s guidance recommends giving an agent access only to the data it needs, reviewing consequential actions before confirming them, and assigning specific tasks rather than broad instructions such as “review my emails and take whatever action is needed.” These practices limit potential impact; they do not establish that an assistant can never be influenced by message content. OpenAI’s prompt-injection guidance sets out these recommendations.
How to use email summaries safely
- Treat a summary as a convenience, not proof that a message is safe or accurate.
- Check important dates, amounts, senders, and requested actions against the original thread before relying on them.
- For organizations, combine email-layer protections with runtime safeguards, restrict assistant permissions to what the task needs, and require human review or confirmation before external sharing or other consequential actions.
These steps follow the risks shown in the controlled test and the safeguards described by Microsoft, Google, and OpenAI. They reduce reliance on an unverified summary without assuming that any single control blocks every possible injection.
