Servers are only one part of AI’s physical footprint, which also involves hardware production and the infrastructure that powers and cools computing systems.
Why the AI e-waste estimates differ
Three prominent estimates illustrate why the figures should not be combined into one headline total. One measures cumulative generative-AI (GAI) e-waste over a decade; the other two estimate annual waste in 2030, with different stated scopes. The available summaries do not provide a harmonized methodological comparison.

| Source and publication date | Estimate | Scope and time basis | How to read it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wang et al., Nature Computational Science, 2024 | 1.2–5.0 million tonnes | Cumulative GAI-related e-waste over 2020–2030, across different future development settings | A scenario range, not an observed total or a single forecast. |
| Alex de Vries-Gao, Resources, Conservation and Recycling, 2026 | 131.0–224.8 kilotonnes per year | AI-server e-waste in 2030 | A recalibrated annual estimate focused on servers; the review highlights supply-chain data and realistic server lifetimes as issues. |
| United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health, 2026 | 2.5 million tonnes per year | Projected annual AI-related electronic waste in 2030 | The available report summary does not provide enough methodological detail to reconcile this figure with the other estimates. |
The estimates differ in equipment scope, time basis and assumptions about deployment and hardware turnover. A decade-cumulative scenario cannot be compared directly with an annual estimate for 2030. Nor does the broad label “AI-related” establish that the UNU estimate uses the same equipment boundary as the server-focused recalibration.

What “beyond servers” means
An AI server is a visible source of discarded hardware, but the physical system around AI is broader. A 2024 United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) issue note describes AI across data preparation, model development, training and deployment, as well as infrastructure production. It identifies energy, water, minerals, emissions and electronic waste as concerns across that lifecycle.
A 2026 UNU report summary likewise describes AI’s dependence on data centers, advanced chips, cooling systems, electricity grids, water resources, land and critical-mineral supply chains. These are useful parts of the wider environmental picture; they should not be mistaken for items necessarily counted in a particular server-waste estimate.

- Package Contain: Two high quality recycling waste bags can be folded and stored without taking up space, easy to carry. Large capacity allows you to organize items perfectly, sorting recyclable cans, paper, glass and plastic, ect. Size: 11.8L× 11.5W× 17.0H
- Premium Material: Our recycling bins are made of high quality polypropylene, which is waterproof, easy to clean and sturdy for a long service life! Weighing capacity is enhanced by double-stitched carrying handles, making the recycle bins for kitchen bag more easy to use
- Garbage Classification: This indoor recycling bins for kitchen has a simple appearance, a set of recycling bins can basically meet the needs of garbage classification, whether it is food waste or other garbage, can be very well differentiated
- Widely Used: As a foldable recycle bins, not only can be used in the kitchen and home, but also can be carried on at all times. Whether you go out for a picnic or a family barbecue, it is a perfect partner for waste separation
- After-Sales Service: Our recycle waste bag for kitchen have a specialized quality control team to ensure that all customers receive the best quality products. If there is any problem, please feel free to contact us. Professional after-sales team will be 24h for you
That distinction matters: e-waste is discarded electrical and electronic equipment, while AI’s broader environmental footprint includes effects that arise before equipment is discarded and during its operation. A server-disposal estimate therefore cannot, by itself, describe the full physical impact of AI infrastructure.
Why lifecycle boundaries and geography matter
Environmental impacts can occur at several stages: extracting materials, manufacturing equipment, operating it and disposing of it. The burdens do not necessarily occur in the same place as the data center or the eventual waste. A 2024 peer-reviewed analysis of AI hardware argues for lifecycle-wide scrutiny because extraction, manufacturing and disposal impacts are geographically distributed. It does not provide a universal allocation of those impacts to AI.

- EXTRA HIGH CAPACITY WASTE AND RECYCLING SOLUTION: Color coded liners in Blue (40L) and Green (30L) allow easy sorting of waste and recycling without sacrificing capacity, and fit standard liners using the bag cinch. Designed in California.
- HANDS-FREE USE: The stainless-steel foot pedal stands up to daily use and removes the need to touch the lid during waste or recycling disposal to keep hands clean.
- SLOW CLOSE LID: Quiet, controlled lid closure is designed to reduce unwanted noise and ease down gently.LID LOCK: Extended open lid lock keeps the container open for longer tasks and chores.
- BUILT IN FILTER HOLDER FOR ODOR CONTROL.
- EASY TO MAINTAIN: Finish naturally hides fingerprints, smudges and dirt. Removable plastic liner and stay open lid lock make bag changes and cleaning easy. Trash bags sold separately.
As a result, electricity use or server disposal alone is not a complete accounting. A sound comparison needs to say what equipment is included, which lifecycle stages are counted and how AI’s share is distinguished from other uses of shared infrastructure.

Broader information and communications technology (ICT) waste provides context, not an AI-specific total. UN Trade and Development’s Digital Economy Report 2024 says waste from screens and small IT equipment increased 30% between 2010 and 2022, reaching 10.5 million tonnes. Those figures cover a broad equipment category and should not be attributed to AI.

- Recycle Sticker For Trash Can:With thisrecycle sign on the bin, it will help you and your family stay organised so that your guests will stop putting recyclables in the bin and put the rubbish in the recycling bin. Makes it easy to sort items such as bottles, plastic tumblers, aluminium cans, electronics, paper, rubbish and hazardous solids
- Widely Used Indoors And Outdoors:The recycling stickers for trash can are designed with unique letters and graphics so that even if you don't speak English you can still read and sort your waste. The recycle decal are ideal for outdoor and indoor use, such as at home, offices, workplaces, commercial events, flats, studios, hotels, gyms, rooms, bars, management centres, etc
- Ideal For Sorting Rubbish:The recycling sticker is made from high quality PVC vinyl with a heavy duty sticker backing, can waterproof, weatherproof and UV resistant, ideal for year round use. Size: 4.72 inch / 12 cm
- Easy To Use:On the premise of making sure the surface of the vehicle you are installing the waste and recycling combo on is clean, simply peel, stick and wipe away any air bubbles with a credit card. recycling stickers are ideal for outdoor and indoor use on a variety of well cleaned surfaces such as stainless steel waste bins, rubbish bins, glass windows, cardboard boxes, disposal collection trucks etc
The same report says production accounts for about 80% of smartphone greenhouse-gas emissions. This is a device-specific lifecycle figure, not a measurement of AI emissions; it illustrates why looking only at a device’s use or disposal can miss impacts earlier in its lifecycle.

What could reduce AI-related e-waste?
Extending equipment life and using circular-economy strategies are potential interventions, but their results depend on implementation and the scenario being considered. Wang and co-authors’ modeled 16–86% reduction applies to GAI e-waste under the strategies and assumptions in their 2024 study; it is not a measured reduction across the AI industry.
A separate 2024 lifecycle study identifies device-lifetime extension as a possible environmental benefit. Taken together, this supports considering longer equipment use alongside other circular approaches, while keeping modeled potential distinct from demonstrated outcomes. The authors of the 2024 GAI study conclude: “This underscores the importance of proactive e-waste management in the face of advancing GAI technologies.”
