It is not one fixed design: a game might put only tradable items on-chain, while a fully on-chain game places core rules and state in smart contracts. AI computation can happen separately, often off-chain. Current project documentation shows several approaches, but does not establish that the combination has improved games or reached mainstream adoption.
What does “on-chain gaming” mean?
“On-chain” describes where some part of a game is recorded or executed; it does not mean that every part of the game runs on a blockchain. The scope ranges from a limited blockchain feature to a game whose core rules and state are handled by smart contracts.

- Selected features on-chain: A game may use blockchain for assets such as NFTs or transferable currencies while keeping its simulation, rules, and code on developer-operated servers. Outlier Ventures described this split in its May 2024 Gaming: Call for Builders document.
- Fully on-chain: In Ethereum.org’s terminology, a fully on-chain game hosts game logic, rules, and state in smart contracts. Its Gaming on Ethereum guide distinguishes this from games that use blockchain for selected features.
The distinction matters: owning an on-chain item does not by itself mean a game’s world, combat, or progression is on-chain. Nor does a blockchain record guarantee that a game will remain playable indefinitely; software, interfaces, and maintainers can still matter.
Where does AI fit—and where does it run?
AI and blockchain are separate design choices. AI may generate dialogue, lore, characters, or other content, or decide how an agent behaves. A blockchain may record ownership, rules, actions, or outcomes. The AI model does not have to run on-chain for a game to combine AI with on-chain state: a system can calculate behavior elsewhere and submit a resulting action to a contract.

For that reason, “AI-driven” does not automatically mean that the AI is decentralized, that its reasoning is publicly verifiable, or that its computation takes place on a blockchain. The examples below describe project designs, not independent proof of performance at scale.
How projects describe using AI agents
Agentbox: agents acting in a spatial world
Agentbox’s whitepaper documentation describes an on-chain execution environment for location, state, risk, asset safety, and behavioral coordination. It says agents can move, fight, gather, craft, acquire land, learn skills, and execute transactions. This is the project’s stated design; it does not establish where every AI computation occurs or independently verify the system’s operation.

SoonChain: agents built from gameplay data
SoonChain’s AaaS documentation describes an “AI Agent as a Service” model using gameplay data authorized by players. The company says developers can use its AIGG Engine and DCRC to build agents that simulate player behavior, serve as companions or esports training partners, or play autonomously. These are vendor-described use cases, not measured findings about agent quality or player outcomes.
AI characters and adaptive stories
AI can also be used for characters, dialogue, and lore that respond to player choices. Outlier Ventures framed responsive NPC interactions and storylines as an opportunity for builders in its May 2024 document. That is a proposed design direction, not evidence that AI improves engagement or enjoyment.

What the adoption figures do—and do not—show
The Blockchain Game Alliance’s 2025 State of the Industry report search-result excerpt lists virtual agents or agentic AI at 34.2% and AI-driven NPCs or companions at 17.0% under “Areas of AI already implemented by companies.” These are company-reported implementation figures. They are not player adoption rates, market shares, or evidence that AI makes games better; the available excerpt does not establish additional survey-method details.
What changes for players?
Wallets and account setup
Ethereum.org says players need a crypto wallet to manage digital in-game assets and, in some cases, to log in. Whether a wallet is needed—and which kind—depends on the game’s design. Before connecting one, check the game’s official documentation for supported networks, wallet compatibility, and any permissions it asks you to approve. Do not assume a game uses Ethereum just because it is described as on-chain.

An Ethereum hardware wallet is one possible custody device, not a universal requirement for playing. Ethereum.org’s wallet directory separates hardware, mobile, browser, and other options and lists features such as NFT and network support. Match any wallet to the game’s chain and setup; a device that supports Ethereum may not suit a game on another network.
Fees, speed, and transaction friction
Some in-game actions may require blockchain transactions, which can bring confirmation delays and fees. Ethereum.org says Layer 2 networks can offer faster confirmations and lower fees, and that most games still use L2 solutions. That is a general description, not a guarantee about the cost or responsiveness of any particular game.

Ownership and permissions
Blockchain records can make ownership or actions visible and transferable where a game supports those features. They do not remove the need to understand what an asset does, which network it uses, or what permissions a transaction grants. The available project descriptions do not support claims about token value or investment returns.

- Established by the terminology and project descriptions: On-chain games vary in how much of the game they put on a blockchain, and AI agents or generated content can be designed to interact with blockchain-recorded state.
- Not established by these examples: That AI agents reliably improve fairness, retention, or enjoyment; that AI computation is on-chain; or that the category has reached mass adoption.
- Still design-dependent: Where the AI runs, what actions are committed to a blockchain, how much players can verify, and how many transactions the experience requires. The cited project materials do not provide enough comparable technical detail for a project-by-project performance ranking.
Ethereum.org quotes Conquest.eth creator Ronan Sandford describing the aspiration behind fully on-chain games: “From the day I stumbled upon Ethereum, I was hooked on the idea of creating games that run and evolve independently of their creator.” The quote expresses a design goal, not proof that every blockchain game can operate without maintainers.
