In his account of building a tool for short debate videos, Ahmed El Otmani says the more useful change was to design the speakers as separate participants and control how their turns reached one another.
Why AI debaters can sound too agreeable
El Otmani built DebaterX to generate short debate videos between rival brands or mascots. He says the early exchanges were courteous but lacked convincing disagreement: the speakers gravitated toward consensus rather than taking distinct positions.

He connects that tendency in part to assistant training and reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF). That is his explanation, not an established causal finding in the article: he provides no cited study or systematic comparison of models. What he changed in the debate design
Separate each speaker’s context
Rather than treating the debate as one shared conversation, El Otmani gave each debater its own context, persona, goals, and assumptions. The design intent is to give each voice a consistent point of view instead of asking a single undifferentiated exchange to produce two contrasting positions.

Control the turn-taking outside the model response
He also describes orchestrating turns externally. One debater speaks; the next receives the first speaker’s transcript as a rival’s mistaken statement to answer. In this setup, the application—not just a prompt asking for a debate—determines whose turn it is and what material the respondent sees.
Write character sheets with real distinctions
For each participant, his character sheets specified more than a name or general personality. They differentiated tone, rhetorical style, taboo moves, and recurring verbal habits. These details were intended to make the voices recognizably different without relying on a generic instruction to “sound unique.”

Shape the rhythm
Finally, El Otmani added pacing choices such as interruptions, trailing off, repetition, and incomplete sentences. Those are deliberate writing and generation choices, not proof that spontaneous human-like conflict has emerged.
Why simply demanding disagreement may fall short
El Otmani says prompt-only approaches, more aggressive instructions, and higher temperature did not solve the problem in his experiments and could be counterproductive. The account does not specify model versions, a repeatable test protocol, sample size, or measured outcomes, so these observations should be read as his experience—not as a rule for every model or task.

The design distinction he describes is between asking for a result and structuring the interaction that produces it. A command to disagree still leaves a model to invent both sides in one conversational frame; separate contexts and externally managed turns instead define distinct roles and a response path. That is a practical design hypothesis, not a demonstrated guarantee of better performance.

El Otmani reports that differentiated personas and manually shaped pacing made his debate exchanges feel less alike. The article supplies no named statistic, reproducible evaluation, or independent validation showing how much the changes helped, whether one change mattered more than another, or whether they generalize beyond short brand-versus-brand videos.
