AI Didn’t Start Cognitive Offloading: Smartphones Made It Easier

People have used external aids to reduce mental demands for generations. Smartphones made many aids portable; AI adds new ways to delegate parts of a task.

No: AI did not invent the practice of outsourcing mental work. People have long used notes, calendars, diaries and navigation aids to reduce what they need to hold in mind. Smartphones gathered many of those tools in one portable device; generative AI adds newer ways to delegate tasks such as retrieving, synthesizing or drafting information. Neither fact, by itself, shows that technology has damaged human cognition.

What is cognitive offloading?

Cognitive offloading is using an action or an external aid to change how much information a task requires you to process or remember. In their 2016 review, Cognitive Offloading, Evan F. Risko and Sam J. Gilbert define it as “the use of physical action to alter the information processing requirements of a task so as to reduce cognitive demand.” Writing down a shopping list, setting a calendar alert or checking a navigation app are ordinary examples.

The term describes a way of handling a task, not a diagnosis or a judgment about ability. A calendar can hold a future intention outside your head; a note can preserve information you may want later. In a 2022 review of intention offloading, Gilbert and co-authors discuss calendars, diaries, strategically placed objects and smartphone alerts as aids for remembering to do something in the future. They describe intention offloading as effective and guided by metacognitive processes—people make decisions about when to rely on an aid.

Did AI invent the idea of outsourcing thinking?

No. The practice predates both smartphones and AI: written records and other external aids have long helped people manage information and intentions. Smartphones made several such aids portable and readily available together, including internet search, calendars, alerts and navigation. Generative AI is a newer kind of aid, but the broader idea of reducing mental demands by using something outside yourself is not new.

There is an important difference between a cue and a substitute. A reminder can prompt you to complete an action while leaving the action itself to you. An AI system may also provide a result that replaces some steps, such as retrieving facts, synthesizing material or drafting text. That distinction is a useful way to examine what a tool does; it is not a universal measure of how much thinking a person retains.

Does using Google make you remember less?

In “Google effects on memory,” a 2011 paper by Betsy Sparrow, Jenny Liu and Daniel M. Wegner, four studies found that when participants expected future access to information, they recalled less of the information itself and were better able to recall where to find it. The result is a shift in what participants remembered under those conditions—not evidence that Google erases memory, causes dementia or produces a general decline in memory.

The authors describe the internet as “a primary form of external or transactive memory, where information is stored collectively outside ourselves.” The practical implication is narrow: when people expect information to remain accessible, remembering its location may matter more to them than retaining the information itself. That experimental finding should not be stretched into a claim about every kind of memory or every way people use the internet.

Do smartphones affect memory and attention?

Research reviewed in “Smartphones and Cognition,” a 2017 review by Nathaniel D. Wilmer, Lauren E. Sherman and Jason M. Chein, covers attention, memory and knowledge, navigation, media multitasking, delay of gratification and everyday executive functioning. The review summarizes studies with mixed outcomes, including reports of notification-related performance disruption and possible effects of a phone’s mere presence during demanding tasks. It also includes null and correlational findings.

Those are distinct questions: whether someone is actively interrupted, whether a phone is simply nearby, and whether an association between phone use and an outcome is causal. The review is a synthesis of separate studies, not proof that one phone habit causes broad cognitive harm. Its findings also should not be treated as a single verdict on every current device or everyday setting.

Is relying on GPS bad for your sense of direction?

Navigation performance and learning a cognitive map are not the same outcome. A navigation system may help someone reach a destination while providing less need to build an internal representation of the route. Wilmer, Sherman and Chein’s 2017 review discusses studies of navigation systems and cognitive-map building, including reports that design can matter—for example, whether users are asked to request their position. The review does not establish that every use of GPS harms everyone’s sense of direction.

So the useful question depends on the goal. If the goal is to arrive, turn-by-turn directions can serve it. If the goal is to learn a route, paying attention to landmarks and the relationships between streets may involve different mental work than following each prompt. Those are different aims, not proof that one navigation choice is always better.

Do reminders mean I have a bad memory?

No conclusion about someone’s memory follows just from using reminders. An alert or written note can be a deliberate way to make a future intention more reliable, rather than evidence of a deficit. The 2022 intention-offloading review describes external aids as effective, while noting that researchers know less about how offloading affects people’s ability to fulfil delayed intentions than about brain-based prospective memory.

A 2025 review by Richmond and Taylor, “The benefits and potential costs of cognitive offloading for retrospective information,” reports laboratory performance benefits from offloading information in retrospective-memory tasks. It also says that when people unexpectedly lose access to offloaded notes, their performance can be worse than if they had relied on internal memory alone. The authors identify working-memory capacity and age as factors that may shape use and benefits, and say real-world conditions need more study. An aid can therefore be useful while still making access to the aid relevant to the task.

What changes when the tool is AI?

AI can do more than store a fact or cue an action: depending on the task, it can produce an answer, summary or draft. That makes it reasonable to ask which mental steps the user wants to practise and which steps the tool is taking over. It does not establish that AI use causes a loss of intelligence or memory.

A 2025 Frontiers in Psychology opinion article, “Outsourcing cognition: the psychological costs of AI-era convenience,” proposes three categories: assistive, substitutive and disruptive offloading. The article offers a conceptual framework for discussing how AI may support, replace or interfere with mental work; it is not a causal experiment or established consensus. Treat the categories as questions to consider, not as measured effects or a diagnosis of any particular use.

How to decide whether an aid fits your goal

A practical distinction is whether a tool supports the outcome you want or replaces thinking you specifically want to practise. This is an editorial rule of thumb, not a validated diagnostic test. Before using an aid, consider:

  • What are you offloading? It might be a fact or list, a future intention, a route, or the effort of switching between tasks.
  • What outcome matters? Recalling information, completing an intention, reaching a destination and learning a route are different goals.
  • What mental steps remain yours? A cue may leave the action to you; a generated answer may take over retrieval or synthesis you meant to do yourself.
  • What if access disappears? If a task depends on a note, alert or generated result, consider whether you need another way to complete it if that aid is unavailable.

If you want to remember an intention, use a reminder that you will notice; a calendar, notebook or paper planner are all possible choices. If you want to learn a route, use navigation in a way that leaves room to notice landmarks. These are ways to match an aid to a goal, not proven treatments for cognitive problems.
