AI Detection Apps Can Falsely Flag Students for Cheating—Here’s What the Evidence Shows

AI detector scores are estimates, not proof of cheating. Here’s what university guidance and published figures say about false flags, limits, and student due process.

Yes. AI-writing detectors can misidentify human-written work, and a detector score alone does not prove who wrote a paper or whether a student violated a course rule. Turnitin itself warns that its model may misidentify human, AI-generated, and AI-paraphrased text and says its report should not be the sole basis for adverse action against a student.

That does not mean every detector is equally inaccurate or every student flagged was innocent. The key distinction is between a tool’s estimate and an academic misconduct finding: the latter should follow the institution’s policy and a fair review of relevant evidence.

What an AI detector result can—and cannot—show

An AI-writing detector estimates whether text has characteristics associated with AI-generated writing. It does not establish authorship, intent, or whether a student broke a particular course rule. A flagged score may prompt a question, but it is not proof of misconduct.

Turnitin’s guidance says its model may misidentify human-written, AI-generated, and AI-paraphrased writing, and cautions that the report should not be used as the sole basis for adverse action against a student. Turnitin’s AI Writing Report guidance also describes how scores are presented: in the current report, scores above 0% and below the 20% threshold do not receive a numerical score or highlighted text. Older reports generated before July 8, 2024, may show a numerical result below 20%.

A detector can also miss AI-written passages. False positives and false negatives both matter; a tool’s score is not a complete account of how a paper was produced.

What the published figures actually mean

Washington State University’s review-board cases

Washington State University reports that, between 2023 and 2025, 33% of its review-board cases involving allegations of inappropriate AI use resulted in a not-responsible finding when AI detection was submitted without other supporting evidence. WSU’s guidance presents this as a finding about its own cases. It is not a finding that 33% of all detector flags are false, nor a general accuracy rate for AI detectors.

Turnitin’s company claims

A September 21, 2026 report by The Atlantic attributes claims of a below-1% false-positive rate and an approximate 15% false-negative rate to Turnitin’s product chief. These are company claims reported by journalism, not independently verified results that can be applied to every tool, institution, or paper. The report also attributes to Turnitin figures about institutional purchases and detection in university submissions; those, too, are company figures rather than independently audited measures. The Atlantic’s report describes Vanderbilt’s estimate that a 1% false-positive rate applied to about 75,000 papers could produce as many as 750 mistaken flags. That is an illustrative calculation, not a measured count of wrongful flags at Vanderbilt.

A percentage cannot be interpreted without knowing what was tested, which model and version were used, the language and length of the text, and how a false positive was defined. Nor does a claimed 1% error rate mean that 1% of students will be accused: the probability that an individual flag is wrong also depends on the circumstances and prevalence of AI use in the population being assessed. No independent, current, cross-product false-positive rate is established here that would support a general accuracy figure for all AI detectors.

Why a small error rate can matter at scale

Even a low claimed error rate can translate into many flags when applied to a large volume of submissions. Vanderbilt made that point in explaining its 2023 decision to disable Turnitin’s AI checker, using a 1% rate and approximately 75,000 papers to illustrate the possible scale. The calculation shows why institutions should consider the consequences of errors; it does not establish that those errors occurred in that number at Vanderbilt.

Scale does not make a vendor’s figure universal. Error rates can vary with the detector version, the material tested, language, text length, and the threshold used. A figure from one product or test set should not be treated as the performance of all detectors.

Universities take different approaches

  • Vanderbilt: Disabled Turnitin’s AI checker in 2023, citing concerns that included the possible effect of false positives at scale. That dated decision does not establish the university’s current configuration. Vanderbilt’s 2023 announcement.

  • Caltech: Strongly discourages the use of AI-detection tools in student writing. Caltech guidance, updated September 19, 2025.

Washington State University says AI detectors should not be the sole source of support for a misconduct case. These policies illustrate a range of institutional responses, not a universal prohibition or permission. WSU’s guidance.

Why detector results vary by language and version

Detection capability is not fixed across every language or model. Turnitin documents separate language-specific AI models for English, Japanese, and Spanish. Whether a detector supports a particular language—and how its current version handles that text—should be checked before interpreting a result. Turnitin’s model-capability documentation.

A score from an earlier model, language setting, or report format may not mean the same thing as a score from a current system. Institutions and students should refer to the actual report and applicable policy rather than assuming all tools work alike.

What should I do if an AI detector says I cheated?

A flag does not predetermine the outcome. Respond through the school’s published academic-integrity process; procedures and deadlines vary by institution.

  1. Read the course and institutional rules. Identify the specific permitted-use policy and the process and deadline for responding to an allegation.
  2. Ask what evidence is being considered. Clarify whether the concern is based on a detector score alone or on additional evidence, and request the relevant report or explanation through the school’s process.
  3. Preserve materials that show how you worked. Keep drafts, notes, version history, assignment instructions, and any disclosures about permitted AI use that are relevant to the work.
  4. Give a factual account. Explain your writing process and address the specific concern with the materials you have. Do not alter or discard records.
  5. Use the stated review or appeal route. Follow the instructions and deadlines in the policy; a detector’s presence in a case does not guarantee any particular outcome.

A detector result is not resolved by trying to disguise writing with an “AI humanizer.” Such tools do not establish authorship or settle whether a course rule was followed, and using them may itself conflict with course rules.

What a fair review should consider

A sound academic-integrity decision separates a tool’s estimate from the question of whether a defined rule was violated. The policy should be clear, and the student should have a meaningful chance to understand and answer the concern. A detector score may be treated as a lead, but Turnitin’s own warning and WSU’s guidance both argue against treating it as sufficient evidence by itself.

For instructors and institutions, alternatives or complements include discussing the work with the student and using in-person assessments, approaches specifically noted in the University of Toronto’s guidance. Regulators have also addressed the harms of false positives and assessment redesign. TEQSA’s guidance on AI detection tools.
