1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYes, some data-center operators are testing or deploying robotic security systems. Quadruped robots, mobile surveillance platforms, drones, fixed AI cameras and remote operations centers can patrol perimeters, inspect equipment, detect anomalies and document incidents. They are not, however, independent security officers. The practical model is usually a connected system in which robots gather data, AI prioritizes alerts, remote analysts review them, and on-site people handle consequential action.
This article concerns physical security at data centers that run AI and cloud workloads—fences, substations, cooling plants, generators, loading areas and restricted rooms—not cybersecurity for GPUs, model APIs or containers. A patrol robot is itself a networked cyber-physical asset, so both concerns matter.

- Quadruped robots: Boston Dynamics Spot-based systems and Ghost Robotics Vision 60-style platforms can carry cameras, thermal sensors, microphones, lights and communications equipment.
- Mobile surveillance robots: Wheeled or legged platforms patrol indoors or outdoors, provide two-way communication and record video and telemetry.
- Autonomous drones: Drone-in-a-box systems can inspect large outdoor perimeters and respond quickly to alarms.
- Fixed AI cameras: Computer vision can flag people, vehicles, loitering, open gates, smoke or fire without moving a robot.
- Remote security operations centers: Human analysts review alerts, teleoperate machines, classify incidents and dispatch on-site personnel.
- Data-center inspection robots: Vendors such as Datum Robotics describe surveillance, visitor escorting, asset tracking and facility-inspection functions, showing that the role extends beyond guarding a fence (Datum Robotics).
Business Insider reported in March 2026 that some data centers were experimenting with Boston Dynamics and Ghost Robotics platforms for perimeter patrols and equipment inspection. The report named Novva Data Centers in secondary coverage; it does not establish industry-wide adoption (Business Insider).

What robots do well
Robots are strongest at repetitive sensing and documentation rather than judgment or physical intervention.
- Repeating a perimeter route overnight and during shift changes.
- Covering rough terrain, grades, substations and long fence lines.
- Capturing consistent optical and thermal imagery.
- Checking gates, fences, doors, generators, cooling equipment and other assets.
- Detecting a person or vehicle in a restricted area and prioritizing the alert.
- Inspecting hot, dark, noisy or potentially hazardous locations.
- Using lights or speakers as a visible deterrent and communication channel.
- Producing time-stamped patrol and incident records.
- Returning to a charger or switching programmed routes when the specific system supports it.
Asylon says its Spot-based DroneDog combines high-definition and thermal cameras, cellular connectivity, an NVIDIA AI/ML processor, DroneIQ software and a remote Robotic Security Operations Center. Those are vendor-described capabilities, not a guarantee that every installation performs identically (Asylon DroneDog).
How autonomous are they?
“Autonomous” covers several different operating modes. Treating them as equivalent creates unrealistic expectations.

Autonomous
The machine navigates, avoids obstacles, recognizes selected objects or events and changes its behavior without continuous steering. This does not mean it understands intent or makes unrestricted legal decisions.
Remotely supervised
A person reviews alerts, takes control when needed, authorizes a response or dispatches staff. Asylon describes autonomous routes and AI alerting alongside remote piloting; its reported mission figures cover multiple industries, not data centers alone (Asylon mission report).
A typical alert flow looks like this:
- The robot or fixed sensor detects motion, heat, an open gate or another anomaly.
- Software classifies and prioritizes the event.
- A remote analyst reviews video, thermal imagery and telemetry.
- The analyst speaks through the robot, requests another view or teleoperates it.
- An on-site guard, mobile patrol, emergency service or law enforcement agency responds when required.
- The incident and evidence are stored for investigation and review.
The reviewed sources support patrol, inspection, communication, detection and escalation. They do not support claims that these machines independently arrest people, use force or perform general law-enforcement functions.
Why data centers are attractive customers
AI and cloud campuses may span many acres and contain expensive, interruption-sensitive infrastructure. Power substations, switchgear, cooling plants, generators, construction zones, loading areas and restricted equipment rooms all need inspection. A single guard cannot be everywhere continuously, while a robot can repeat routes and send the same sensor data to a centralized team.

Operators may also face overnight staffing difficulties or want one remote operation center to support several sites. The business case is therefore about coverage, consistency and earlier detection—not simply removing a person from a post. Boston Dynamics presents security robotics as an augmented force combining robots, software, procedures and people (perimeter-security overview; business-impact discussion).
What the economics really mean
Business Insider reported approximate configured Spot prices of $175,000–$300,000, and described a 24/7 human guard post at roughly $150,000 annually. Those are secondary-reporting estimates, not universal list prices or an apples-to-apples replacement calculation. The same coverage attributed a possible roughly two-year payback to Boston Dynamics; that is a vendor estimate, not an independently verified result across customers (Business Insider; Entrepreneur).
| Cost or requirement | Robot-based operation | Human-post comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Up-front expense | Platform, payloads, mapping and integration; reported Spot figures vary by configuration. | Recruiting, onboarding, uniforms and access-control equipment. |
| Recurring expense | Software, remote monitoring labor, connectivity, charging, maintenance, insurance and replacement. | Wages, benefits, payroll taxes, supervision, training, relief coverage and turnover. |
| Coverage | Repeatable routes and sensor records, subject to battery, terrain and network limits. | Human observation, conversation and immediate judgment, subject to fatigue and staffing. |
| Response | Remote communication and escalation; physical intervention still needs people. | Can speak with people, investigate and act within training and policy. |
| Failure recovery | Spare unit, remote recovery, technician or dispatched guard. | Relief staff, supervisor or emergency services. |
Buyers should compare the total cost of a complete security function. A robot does not automatically replace one guard: it may require an analyst, an on-site responder, a technician and a spare unit.

- Verify whether an alert is a trespasser, employee, contractor, animal or emergency responder.
- Talk with visitors and contractors, handle access exceptions and de-escalate confrontations.
- Respond to people in distress or experiencing a mental-health crisis.
- Decide whether to call police, fire services or emergency medical services.
- Search areas, conduct interviews and preserve chain of custody.
- Repair, charge, recover or replace a robot.
- Respond when an intruder cannot be deterred remotely, or when communications fail.
- Maintain procedures, training, privacy controls and accountability.
Asylon explicitly describes trained analysts in its remote operations center and argues for keeping human expertise in the loop (Asylon on enterprise risk). Boston Dynamics likewise describes robotics as an augmented human capability, not a one-for-one elimination of security staff.

Physical and environmental limits
- Mud, snow, ice, standing water, debris, glare, fog and heavy rain can block routes or degrade sensors.
- Construction changes, forklifts, trucks and temporary equipment can create false alarms or collisions.
- Low battery, mechanical damage or a blocked path can leave an area unpatrolled.
- Deliberate obstruction, vandalism or theft can disable the platform.
Detection is not identification
Computer vision may classify “person” or “vehicle,” but it does not necessarily know who the subject is, whether access is authorized, whether the person is dangerous or what response is proportionate. False positives and false negatives remain possible.
Connectivity and cyber risk
A connected robot has accounts, firmware, cameras, microphones, location data and remote-control interfaces. Operators should isolate it from corporate and operational-technology networks, require strong device identity and authentication, encrypt data, control remote access and define update procedures. Boston Dynamics’ Spot and Site Hub security paper treats the platform as a cyber-physical system rather than merely a camera (Spot and Site Hub security paper).
Contracts should specify what happens after a network outage, cloud-service failure or operations-center outage: fail-safe stop, return-to-base, human dispatch, a spare unit or another documented procedure.

Privacy, safety and liability
Continuous optical, thermal or audio monitoring affects employees, contractors and visitors as well as intruders. A deployment needs a defined purpose, notice where required, retention and deletion rules, access controls, evidence-export procedures and a lawful basis for collecting data. Thermal imagery is still surveillance; a speaker or microphone can create additional privacy and safety issues.
Operators should document collision zones, operating limits near forklifts and high-voltage equipment, hazardous-area rules, emergency stops and responsibility for missed alerts or unsafe announcements. “Deterrence” is not the same as enforcement, and a visible robot must not be presented as a police officer.
How the technology changes security work
Four outcomes are possible:
- Augmentation: robots extend the range and consistency of an existing team.
- Labor substitution: fewer people perform routine walking patrols.
- Remote consolidation: one operations center supervises systems at multiple sites.
- Task redesign: staff move toward alert review, investigation, dispatch, maintenance and emergency response.
Available evidence supports augmentation and task substitution more strongly than guard-free facilities. Some sites may reduce headcount; others may use robots to cover terrain or hours they could not economically staff. A precise number of jobs displaced cannot be inferred from vendor deployments.

How operators should evaluate a purchase
Site and mission fit
- Measure acreage, fence length, terrain, stairs, weather exposure and indoor/outdoor routes.
- Define whether the need is deterrence, detection, inspection, escorting or response.
- List thermal-imaging, hazardous-area and equipment-monitoring requirements.
- Confirm charging locations and reliable private cellular, Wi-Fi or wired connectivity.
Human-response model
- Who verifies an alert and who speaks to a person?
- Who arrives physically, at what time and under what escalation rule?
- How many robots can one operator supervise for this mission?
- What happens when the remote center or network is unavailable?
Technical integration
Require compatibility with existing IP cameras, video-management software, access control, visitor management, alarms, dispatch, radio systems and security-operations platforms. Confirm data retention, evidence export and segmentation from sensitive networks.
Commercial and service terms
- Request purchase or rental price, software and monitoring fees, installation, mapping and integration charges.
- Ask about uptime, maintenance response, battery replacement, spare units and field support.
- Require the operator-to-robot ratio, contract length, exit terms and assumptions behind any return-on-investment claim.
- Compare the complete function with fixed cameras, thermal sensors, mobile human patrols, better fencing or a drone-in-a-box system.
Which vendors and alternatives fit different sites?
| Option | Typical fit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Boston Dynamics Spot | Complex industrial sites needing inspection, mapping, patrol and custom payloads. | Reported $175,000–$300,000 figures vary; deployments often involve partners and integration. |
| Asylon DroneDog | Managed Spot-based perimeter security with remote analysts. | No public price in the cited material; requires a vendor-operated monitoring layer. |
| Datum Robotics | Data-center surveillance, escorting, visitor and asset tracking, inspection. | Quote-based; may be unnecessary when fixed cameras already solve the problem. |
| Knightscope | Campuses, parking and commercial properties needing visible presence and communication. | Confirm suitability for restricted interiors and industrial inspection. |
| Open Droids | Managed autonomous patrol for industrial and corporate sites. | Advertised $4-per-hour operation and 60–80% savings are marketing claims requiring validation. |
For many smaller facilities, fixed cameras with human-verified remote monitoring, improved lighting and access control, or mobile human patrols will be easier to operate than a quadruped. EyeBuild, for example, advertises remote guarding from about $399 per month for construction and remote sites; that is not a direct hyperscale-data-center comparison (EyeBuild).
Are robots replacing data-center guards?
They can replace some routine patrol tasks and may reduce staffing requirements in specific environments. The stronger description of today’s systems is automated patrol with human supervision. Robots collect observations; AI filters them; analysts interpret them; guards, technicians and emergency responders remain accountable for action.
The transformation is therefore not simply “robots versus humans.” It is the conversion of physical security into a networked operation whose own devices, data, software and remote access must be secured.
