AI Code Review Should Sound Like a Careful Engineer

Trustworthy AI code review ties findings to code and behavior, explains impact, distinguishes blockers from suggestions, and admits when context is missing.

An AI code review earns trust by showing its reasoning, not by sounding certain. It should connect each finding to the changed code and its surrounding behavior, explain the practical impact, and suggest a proportionate next step. It should also distinguish required fixes from optional advice, recognize specific good work, and say when it lacks enough context to judge.

What makes an AI review comment credible?

A credible comment helps the author check a claim against the code. It points to a relevant line, function, or behavior; explains why that behavior matters; and offers a narrow path to resolve or verify the concern. A fluent-sounding assertion without evidence is not a useful review.

Google Engineering Practices frames review as an examination of the change in context, not just a scan of the diff. Its guidance covers design, functionality, complexity, tests, naming, comments, style, and documentation. Reviewers should understand the lines they assess and look beyond the changed lines when necessary to understand how the system behaves.

That is also why a reviewer should avoid declaring a defect based on a plausible guess. A concern about a return value, for example, depends on how callers interpret it; a concurrency concern depends on the surrounding execution model. The comment should make the evidence and any assumptions visible.

How to write feedback that helps the author act

Describe the behavior, then its impact

State what the code appears to do and why it could matter to a user, system invariant, maintainability, or confidence in the tests. “This may break” leaves the author to infer both the failure and its importance. A brief explanation lets them assess whether the concern applies.

Offer the smallest useful next step

Suggest a focused correction, check, or question rather than prescribing a broad redesign. The author may know constraints that are not visible in the diff. Google’s reviewer guidance recommends balancing identification of a problem with direct, helpful suggestions, and advises reviewers to “Be kind.”

Make priority unambiguous

Use labels such as “Required,” “Optional,” “Nit,” or “FYI” consistently with the team’s review conventions. A correctness or safety issue may need to be fixed before approval; a naming preference usually should not be framed as a blocker. Inflating a minor preference into a must-fix makes every comment harder to trust.

Recognize specific good decisions

Review is not only defect-finding. Call out a test that covers the regression, a simplification that removes unnecessary complexity, or another concrete choice that improves the change. Specific recognition tells the author what worked; generic praise adds little.

A practical pattern for an AI review comment

A compact comment can cover four things without turning every observation into a mini-report:

  • Finding: Identify the code path or behavior in question.
  • Impact: Explain the plausible consequence.
  • Next step: Ask for a focused check or suggest a proportionate correction.
  • Priority: Say whether this is required, optional, or informational.

For example, if the code and its callers confirm the behavior, a comment might say: “This fallback returns an empty result when the cache lookup times out, so callers may treat a temporary backend issue as ‘no records.’ Could we propagate the timeout or retry here? I consider this a required behavior fix because it changes the response for existing users.” The example is illustrative: without checking the actual implementation and caller expectations, a reviewer should not make that claim.

Where AI review needs restraint

A review comment is feedback to evaluate, not proof that a bug exists or that a proposed fix is correct. The author should check the cited code path, surrounding behavior, and relevant tests before acting on it. AI-generated confidence or courteous wording does not establish correctness.

Some areas need context or expertise the reviewer may not have. Google’s review checklist specifically calls attention to privacy, security, concurrency, accessibility, and internationalization as areas where qualified reviewers may be needed. When the relevant assumptions are unavailable, a careful comment asks for context or flags the need for specialist review instead of bluffing.

Empirical results also counsel against treating any one comment style as a guarantee. A 2025 study of 16 AI code-review GitHub Actions across 178 repositories and more than 22,000 comments reported wide variation in effectiveness. It found associations between comments leading to code changes and characteristics including concision and code snippets, as well as manual triggering and hunk-level tools. Those are associations in the studied sample, not proof that concise comments cause correct changes or a universal ranking of tools. Read the study.

What deployment figures do—and do not—show

A 2024 Google Research-authored paper on a deployed machine-learning assistant reported that, after several months, it addressed roughly 7.5% of reviewers’ comments in Google’s day-to-day work. That figure describes assistance resolving review comments in Google’s internal environment. It is not a measure of the percentage of defects an AI reviewer catches, and it should not be treated as a general result for public tools. Read the paper.

Product capabilities are not a quality verdict

Google Cloud’s documentation, last updated September 30, 2026, says Gemini Code Assist on GitHub can generate pull-request summaries and review feedback. Its documented review comments can include issue severity, feedback, code suggestions that can be committed from GitHub, and references to a user-provided style guide. Those capabilities describe a workflow; they do not independently establish that a finding is correct or that the tool always sounds like a careful engineer. See the Gemini Code Assist for GitHub documentation.

For teams evaluating a review tool, useful questions include whether it supports the team’s repository and platform, how reviews are triggered and scoped, whether severity is controllable, whether comments offer actionable suggestions, whether team style guidance can be supplied, and what access and privacy terms apply. The documentation cited here establishes capabilities for Gemini Code Assist, not a current head-to-head ranking of code-review products.

Review principles behind the approach

Google Engineering Practices sets out the broader standards behind these recommendations: reviewers should assess changes in context, write courteous and useful comments that explain their reasoning, make review intent clear, and notice good practices as well as problems. Its guidance is a useful reference for teams defining how automated feedback should fit into human review.
