AI Can Write the Code. Why You Still Need to Understand the System

Code generation is not system understanding. Learn how AI can help explain code—and why repository context, review and testing still matter.

AI can produce a patch faster than a developer can understand all the assumptions and interactions behind it. That is a plausible engineering tension, not a measured rule for every team. The practical answer is that generating code and understanding a system are different tasks: developers still need enough context to judge whether a change belongs, behaves as intended and is safe to rely on.

Why code generation is not the same as understanding

A generated function may look reasonable in isolation and still depend on an API contract, data shape, permission boundary or convention elsewhere in the repository. Understanding the system means knowing how those pieces connect and what a change might affect. The code itself is only one part of that picture.

That work is often difficult even without AI. In their ICSE 2024 study, Daye Nam, Andrew Macvean, Vincent Hellendoorn, Bogdan Vasilescu and Brad A. Myers note: “Understanding code is challenging, especially when working in new and complex development environments.” They add that “Code comments and documentation can help, but are typically scarce or hard to navigate.” The study explored ways to use a language model to help developers understand existing code, rather than only produce new code.

AI can help explain existing code, with important limits

The study examined an in-IDE conversational interface for questions about code explanations, API details, domain terminology and examples. That points to a useful distinction: an assistant can be asked to explain what is already there, not just to draft what should be added.

The user study had 32 participants, and the authors reported differences in use and perceived benefits between students and professional developers. It is a concrete example of an AI-assisted comprehension workflow, not proof that every assistant improves understanding or that one approach works equally well for every developer. Treat an explanation as a lead to verify against the repository and other authoritative documentation, not as a substitute for them.

Look at the engineering system around the AI

AI’s effects depend on the setting in which it is used: how much relevant context is available, how work is reviewed, and how quickly teams can find defects. DORA’s 2025 State of AI-assisted Software Development report describes AI as an amplifier of organizational strengths and dysfunctions. The report draws on nearly 5,000 technology professionals worldwide and more than 100 hours of qualitative data, according to its authors. Its implication for an individual developer is not that AI has one guaranteed effect, but that the surrounding engineering practices matter.

Earlier DORA findings illustrate why perceived speed and confidence need to be considered separately. In 2024, 75% of respondents reported positive productivity impacts from generative AI; that is a survey measure of perception, not a measured productivity gain for every developer. In the same year, 39% of developers outside Google said they trusted generative AI output quality only “a little” or “not at all.” These figures come from DORA’s 2024 trust article, which was published on September 13, 2024, and updated March 19, 2025.

A practical way to work with generated code

Use AI to reduce the effort of drafting or navigating code, while keeping responsibility for the system-level judgment. Before relying on a change, work through these checks:

  1. Ask for an explanation as well as a patch. Request the purpose of each changed part, relevant APIs, assumptions, and dependencies. Ask which files or contracts informed the explanation.
  2. Trace the change through the system. Follow the data, callers, configuration and error paths that connect the edited code to the behavior users or other services depend on.
  3. Verify assumptions in context. Compare the generated answer with repository code, project documentation and API definitions. Check edge cases, authorization expectations and compatibility where relevant.
  4. Inspect the actual diff. Look for unrelated edits, hidden behavior changes, overly broad permissions, missing error handling and code that conflicts with established conventions.
  5. Run relevant automated tests and get review. Tests can catch behavior that does not match expectations; reviewers can question assumptions that tests do not cover. DORA recommends: “Double-down on fast high-quality feedback, like code reviews and automated testing, using gen AI as appropriate.”

DORA’s trust article also reports that 75% of its 2024 respondents said generative AI had a positive impact on their productivity, while 39% of developers outside Google trusted its output quality only “a little” or “not at all.” Those survey findings describe reported perceptions, not guaranteed outcomes for a particular developer or project.
