AI Browsers That Do the Clicking: What They Can—and Can’t—Do on Real Errands

AI browser agents can click, navigate and fill forms, but benchmark scores are not a promise that a real errand will finish correctly. Here’s how to assess them safely.

AI browser agents can navigate websites, enter information, and carry out some multi-step actions—but a fluent progress update is not proof that an errand finished correctly. Published benchmarks measure specific tasks, not your next booking or form. Treat these tools as supervised assistants: verify the page and every important field, and keep the final commitment under your control.

What counts as an AI browser “doing the clicking”?

An ordinary AI assistant may explain a page or summarize its contents. A browser agent is asked to change what is happening in the browser: search, navigate, select options, fill fields, or submit a form. The meaningful test is whether it reaches the requested state—not whether it describes a plausible sequence of actions.

OpenAI describes its Computer-Using Agent as interpreting screenshots and operating a virtual mouse and keyboard, including clicking, scrolling, typing, navigating websites, and filling forms. It may ask the user to step in for sensitive actions. That is OpenAI’s description of its system, not proof that every browser agent works the same way or can complete every site workflow. What do the published results actually show?

OpenAI reported the following success rates for its Computer-Using Agent on three distinct benchmarks in its 2025 evaluation. Each result belongs to that system and the benchmark’s particular tasks and setup; none is a general success rate for consumer browser errands.

Benchmark OpenAI-reported result What it measures—and what it does not establish
OSWorld 38.1% success Computer-use benchmark performance; not a prediction that an agent will finish a particular online transaction.
WebArena 58.1% success Web-agent benchmark performance. OpenAI said the agent still needed improvement on more complex WebArena tasks.
WebVoyager 87% success Performance on a live-website browsing benchmark. OpenAI described its tasks as relatively simple.

OpenAI also cautioned that it did not expect reliable performance in every scenario. These figures should not be compared as though the benchmarks were interchangeable: they use different task sets and measure different kinds of work. OpenAI’s evaluation and benchmark discussion

Information retrieval is another separate category. OpenAI’s BrowseComp benchmark contains 1,266 challenging questions designed to have short, verifiable answers. A score on that benchmark would speak to finding hard-to-locate information, not to completing a purchase, booking, or form. OpenAI says it is unclear how well BrowseComp performance correlates with open-ended real-user browsing. OpenAI’s BrowseComp description

A separate comparison by AI Multiple says it tested ten AI browsers on webpage summarization, multi-site research, form automation, and cross-tab workflows, and reports that some products could not read the page in view. That provides comparison context, not results from this article or a guarantee about every product’s current version. AI Multiple’s AI Web Browsers selection guide

Were these browsers tested on real errands here?

No independently logged real-errand results are available to report here, so this article does not claim that a browser completed a booking, shopping task, or form test. The published benchmarks above are not substitutes for that kind of hands-on result. Product availability, plan limits, pricing, device and regional support, and current behavior have also not been established across a set of alternatives; check each vendor’s current details before choosing a tool.

If you want to evaluate an agent yourself, use repeatable, low-stakes tasks and verify the result independently. A useful test set can distinguish correct completion from confident narration:

  1. Compare information across sites. Ask for a concise comparison with links to two or more public pages. Check that the cited pages support each detail.
  2. Fill, but do not submit, a form. Use a public or otherwise safe non-submitted form. Inspect every field before taking any further action.
  3. Complete a cross-tab draft. Ask it to gather details from two pages into a checklist or draft, then compare each value with its source page.
  4. Observe recovery from a benign obstacle. A changed layout, missing field, or blocked page can reveal whether the agent notices the problem and asks for help rather than guessing.

For each run, record the product and version, date, region and device, task wording, starting state, permissions requested, elapsed time, outcome, interventions, errors or retries, blocked sites, and your independent check of the final state. Use the same instructions and account or session conditions when comparing products; repeat tasks if behavior varies and disclose the small sample. Do not put a real payment, booking, account change, or sensitive personal information at risk to test an agent.

What can go wrong during a live task?

The agent may not reach the requested state

A plausible answer or narration is not confirmation that the correct page was reached, the right details were entered, or the requested change took effect. Check the resulting page, data, and status yourself. Some websites block agent access even when they work in a normal browser, so a task may stop and require a human handoff. A website can contain instructions aimed at the agent

Prompt injection is a risk in which web content attempts to redirect an agent away from the user’s request. Perplexity describes browser-agent prompt injection as an attack surface and says realistic security evaluation remains understudied. Its BrowseSafe approach pairs content detection with user confirmation and tool-policy enforcement; that is the vendor’s account of its work, not independent proof that any browser agent is safe. Perplexity’s BrowseSafe discussion

Published security findings have specific scope

University of Washington researchers report testing seven browser-agent configurations in late January and early February 2026 on macOS Sequoia. They demonstrated a successful cross-origin data-theft attack on ChatGPT Atlas in Agent Mode. They also report that, if prompt injection succeeds, relevant preconditions for the attack existed in Chrome with Gemini, Claude for Chrome, and Perplexity Comet. That does not mean the same demonstrated attack succeeded on every one of those products, or that every version is affected. The researchers also discuss risks including reading masked input and potential cross-origin action forgery or chat-memory poisoning. The researchers summarize their concern this way: “In our experiments, we find that the same-origin policy is reduced to the strength of an agent’s defenses against prompt injections in multiple agentic browsers today.” The finding is a warning about the studied configurations and conditions, not a claim that all agents are equally vulnerable in every situation. How should you supervise an AI browser?

OpenAI says its cloud browser is separate from a user’s local browser: it does not use local open tabs, browsing history, saved passwords, cookies, extensions, or existing sign-ins. It maintains its own cookies and sign-in sessions. OpenAI also says it is designed to request confirmation before actions that could create a financial, legal, account, or other real-world commitment, such as making a payment or confirming a booking. A confirmation prompt is a checkpoint, not a reason to skip your own review. OpenAI’s cloud-browser guidance

Before allowing an agent to proceed, check the website address, sign-in preview, and any screenshot or confirmation request. Review the exact action and details on the site before approving a consequential step. OpenAI advises users not to paste passwords, security codes, or payment details into the conversation and notes that safeguards do not eliminate every risk. OpenAI’s safety recommendations

Is ChatGPT Atlas still a current option?

No. OpenAI’s Atlas transition help page listed August 9, 2026, as the date Atlas was scheduled to stop working and advised users to move to a supported browser experience. That date has passed, so Atlas should not be treated as a live choice in a current comparison. OpenAI’s separate cloud-browser help describes a ChatGPT cloud-browser experience; it does not establish that this is the same product as Atlas.
